Distribution of transuranic elements in a freshwater pond ecosystem
Preliminary results are reported from a study initiated on the Hanford Reservation concerning the ecological behavior of Pu, Pu, Pu, and Am in a freshwater environment. This study involves a waste pond which has been receiving Pu processing wastes for about 30 years. The pond has a sufficiently established ecosystem to provide an excellent location for limnological characterization. In addition, the ecological distribution of Pu and Am was investigated. The pond is also highly enriched with nutrients, thus supporting a high level of algal and macrophyte production. Seston (30 percent diatoms) appears to be the principal concentrators of Pu transuranics in the pond system. The major sink for Pu and Am in this system is the sediments. Organic floc, overlaying the pond sediments, is also a major concentrator of transuranics in this system. Aside from the seston and floc, no other ecological components of the pond appear to have concentrations significantly greater than those of the sediment. Dragonfly, larvae, watercress, and snails show concentrations which approximate those of the sediments but nearly all other food web components have levels of Pu and Am which are lower than those of the sediments, thus, Pu and Am seem to be relatively immobile in the aquatic ecosystem. Numerical Study of the Spin-Flop Transition in Anisotropic Spin-1/2 Antiferromagnets
Magnetization processes of the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic model in two
and three spatial dimensions are studied using quantum Monte Carlo method based
on stochastic series expansions. Recently developed operator-loop algorithm
enables us to show a clear evidence of the first-order phase transition in the
presence of an external magnetic field. Phase diagrams of closely related
systems, hard core bosons with nearest-neighbor repulsions, are also discussed
focusing on possibilities of phase-separated and supersolid phases.Comment: 4 pages, Revtex version 4, with 4 figures embedded, To appear in

Anderson-Yuval approach to the multichannel Kondo problem
We analyze the structure of the perturbation expansion of the general
multichannel Kondo model with channel anisotropic exchange couplings and in the
presence of an external magnetic field, generalizing to this case the
Anderson-Yuval technique. For two channels, we are able to map the Kondo model
onto a generalized resonant level model. Limiting cases in which the equivalent
resonant level model is solvable are identified. The solution correctly
captures the properties of the two channel Kondo model, and also allows an
analytic description of the cross-over from the non Fermi liquid to the Fermi

Interacting one dimensional electron gas with open boundaries
We discuss the properties of interacting electrons on a finite chain with
open boundary conditions. We extend the Haldane Luttinger liquid description to
these systems and study how the presence of the boundaries modifies various
correlation functions. In view of possible experimental applications to quantum
wires, we analyse how tunneling measurements can reveal the underlying
Luttinger liquid properties. The two terminal conductance is calculated. We
also point out possible applications to quasi one dimensional materials and

Magnetic properties of a new molecular-based spin-ladder system: (5IAP)2CuBr4*2H2O
We have synthesized and characterized a new spin-1/2 Heisenberg
antiferromagnetic ladder: bis 5-iodo-2-aminopyridinium tetrabromocuprate(II)
dihydrate. X-ray diffraction studies show the structure of the compound to
consist of well isolated stacked ladders and the interaction between the Cu(2+)
atoms to be due to direct Br...Br contacts. Magnetic susceptibility and
magnetization studies show the compound to be in the strong-coupling limit,
with the interaction along the rungs (J' ~ 13 K) much greater than the
interaction along the rails (J ~ 1 K). Magnetic critical fields are observed
near 8.3 T and 10.4 T, respectively, establishing the existence of the energy

Anomalous Zn- and Ni-substitution effects on superconductivity in the superconducting weak ferromagnets RuSr2RCu2O8 (R = Gd, Eu)
100學年度研究獎補助論文[[abstract]]The effect of magnetic Ni and non-magnetic Zn impurities on superconducting transition temperature Tc in RuSr2R(Cu1−x(Ni, Zn)x)2O8 with R = Gd or Eu (Ni- and Zn-substituted Ru1212Gd(Eu)) was extensively studied. It is found that the suppression rate dTc/dx of RuSr2R(Cu1−x(Ni, Zn)x)2O8 is comparable to that of underdoped YBa2(Cu1−x(Ni, Zn)x)3O7−δ. The suppression of superconductivity in Ni-substituted Ru1212Eu samples is more significant than that in Zn-substituted ones, indicative of Ni being a more effective pair-breaker than Zn. In strong contrast, the magnetic Ni impurity atoms have a weaker effect on superconductivity than non-magnetic Zn atoms in Ru1212Gd, similar to what was observed in the high-Tc cuprates. These intriguing findings strongly suggest that the impurity-induced local disturbance of the 3d-spin correlation at Cu sites around Ni/Zn is distinctly different between Ru1212Gd and Ru1212Eu.[[notice]]補正完畢[[journaltype]]國外[[incitationindex]]SCI[[booktype]]紙本[[countrycodes]]NL
The 2-Channel Kondo Model I: Review of Experimental Evidence for its Realization in Metal Nanoconstrictions
Certain zero-bias anomalies (ZBAs) in the voltage, temperature and magnetic
field dependence of the conductance of quenched Cu point contacts
have previously been interpreted to be due to non-magnetic 2-channel Kondo
(2CK) scattering from near-degenerate atomic two-level tunneling systems (Ralph
and Buhrman, 1992; Ralph et al. 1994), and hence to represent an experimental
realization of the non-Fermi-liquid physics of the T=0 fixed point of the
2-channel Kondo model. In this, the first in a series of three papers
(I,II,III) devoted to 2-channel Kondo physics, we present a comprehensive
review of the quenched Cu ZBA experiments and their 2CK interpretation,
including new results on ZBAs in constrictions made from Ti or from metallic
glasses. We first review the evidence that the ZBAs are due to electron
scattering from stuctural defects that are not static, but possess internal
dynamics. In order to distinguish between several mechanisms proposed to
explain the experiments, we then analyze the scaling properties of the
conductance at low temperature and voltage and extract from the data a
universal scaling function . The theoretical calculation of the
corresponding scaling function within the 2CK model is the subject of papers II
and III. The main conclusion of our work is that the properties of the ZBAs,
and most notably their scaling behavior, are in good agreement with the 2CK

Luttinger model approach to interacting one-dimensional fermions in a harmonic trap
A model of interacting one--dimensional fermions confined to a harmonic trap
is proposed. The model is treated analytically to all orders of the coupling
constant by a method analogous to that used for the Luttinger model. As a first
application, the particle density is evaluated and the behavior of Friedel
oscillations under the influence of interactions is studied. It is found that
attractive interactions tend to suppress the Friedel oscillations while strong
repulsive interactions enhance the Friedel oscillations significantly. The
momentum distribution function and the relation of the model interaction to

Enhancement of long-range magnetic order by magnetic field in superconducting La2CuO(4+y)
We report a detailed study, using neutron scattering, transport and
magnetization measurements, of the interplay between superconducting (SC) and
spin density wave (SDW) order in La2CuO(4+y). Both kinds of order set in below
the same critical temperature. However, the SDW order grows with applied
magnetic field, whereas SC order is suppressed. Most importantly, the field
dependence of the SDW Bragg peak intensity has a cusp at zero field, as
predicted by a recent theory of competing SDW and SC order. This leads us to
conclude that there is a repulsive coupling between the two order parameters.
The question of whether the two kinds of order coexist or microscopically phase

The Next Generation of Human-Drone Partnerships: Co-Designing an Emergency Response System
The use of semi-autonomous Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) to support
emergency response scenarios, such as fire surveillance and search and rescue,
offers the potential for huge societal benefits. However, designing an
effective solution in this complex domain represents a "wicked design" problem,
requiring a careful balance between trade-offs associated with drone autonomy
versus human control, mission functionality versus safety, and the diverse
needs of different stakeholders. This paper focuses on designing for
situational awareness (SA) using a scenario-driven, participatory design
process. We developed SA cards describing six common design-problems, known as
SA demons, and three new demons of importance to our domain. We then used these
SA cards to equip domain experts with SA knowledge so that they could more
fully engage in the design process. We designed a potentially reusable solution
for achieving SA in multi-stakeholder, multi-UAV, emergency response
