    Serotonin regulates mitochondrial biogenesis and function in rodent cortical neurons via the 5-HT2A receptor and SIRT1–PGC-1α axis

    Mitochondria in neurons, in addition to their primary role in bioenergetics, also contribute to specialized functions, including regulation of synaptic transmission, Ca2+ homeostasis, neuronal excitability, and stress adaptation. However, the factors that influence mitochondrial biogenesis and function in neurons remain poorly elucidated. Here, we identify an important role for serotonin (5-HT) as a regulator of mitochondrial biogenesis and function in rodent cortical neurons, via a 5-HT2A receptor-mediated recruitment of the SIRT1–PGC-1α axis, which is relevant to the neuroprotective action of 5-HT. We found that 5-HT increased mitochondrial biogenesis, reflected through enhanced mtDNA levels, mitotracker staining, and expression of mitochondrial components. This resulted in higher mitochondrial respiratory capacity, oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) efficiency, and a consequential increase in cellular ATP levels. Mechanistically, the effects of 5-HT were mediated via the 5-HT2A receptor and master modulators of mitochondrial biogenesis, SIRT1 and PGC-1α. SIRT1 was required to mediate the effects of 5-HT on mitochondrial biogenesis and function in cortical neurons. In vivo studies revealed that 5-HT2A receptor stimulation increased cortical mtDNA and ATP levels in a SIRT1-dependent manner. Direct infusion of 5-HT into the neocortex and chemogenetic activation of 5-HT neurons also resulted in enhanced mitochondrial biogenesis and function in vivo. In cortical neurons, 5-HT enhanced expression of antioxidant enzymes, decreased cellular reactive oxygen species, and exhibited neuroprotection against excitotoxic and oxidative stress, an effect that required SIRT1. These findings identify 5-HT as an upstream regulator of mitochondrial biogenesis and function in cortical neurons and implicate the mitochondrial effects of 5-HT in its neuroprotective action.Fil: Fanibunda, S.     Machine learning for estimation of building energy consumption and performance:a review

    Ever growing population and progressive municipal business demands for constructing new buildings are known as the foremost contributor to greenhouse gasses. Therefore, improvement of energy eciency of the building sector has become an essential target to reduce the amount of gas emission as well as fossil fuel consumption. One most eective approach to reducing CO2 emission and energy consumption with regards to new buildings is to consider energy eciency at a very early design stage. On the other hand, ecient energy management and smart refurbishments can enhance energy performance of the existing stock. All these solutions entail accurate energy prediction for optimal decision making. In recent years, articial intelligence (AI) in general and machine learning (ML) techniques in specic terms have been proposed for forecasting of building energy consumption and performance. This paperprovides a substantial review on the four main ML approaches including articial neural network, support vector machine, Gaussian-based regressions and clustering, which have commonly been applied in forecasting and improving building energy performance

    An undescribed species of Mycetia Reinw. (Rubiaceae) from India

    The present paper describing a new species of Mycetia Reinw. ( Rubiaceae) is based on a collection by J. L. Lister in 1874—75 and subsequently by G. King’s Collector Badul Khan in January, 1890 from Dafla Hills, NEFA. The late Dr. G. King named the taxon Adenosacme listeri King MSS which was not published. Later on I. H. Burkill in Rec. Bot. Surv. India 10 (1925) 298 named his specimens ( Burkill 36423 & 37321) from the Abor Hills Adenosacme listeri King without description. An examination of Burkill’s specimens in the herbarium (CAL) reveals that his collection is not conspecific with Lister’s, named by King. Very recently G. Panigrahi & S. K. Kar in Bull. Bot. Surv. India 5 (1963) 27 named a collection ( Panigrahi 19395) A. listeri King ex Burkill, probably without knowing that it was not a validly published name and that the specimen is not conspecific with Burkill’s collection, where as it is identical with Lister’s. The generic name Mycetia Reinw. has been established as the valid name for Adenosacme Wall. Studies on the genus Mycetia Reinw. suggest that Lister’s collection deserves specific status as suggested by King. Recent collection of the material indicates that the plant exists over a larger area. Hence it is considered desirable to name and describe the species. Specific name suggested by King after the first collector Lister is retained here

    Evolutionary multi-objective environmental/economic dispatch: Stochastic versus deterministic approaches

    Abstract. Due to the environmental concerns that arise from the emissions produced by fossil-fueled electric power plants, the classical economic dispatch, which operates electric power systems so as to minimize only the total fuel cost, can no longer be considered alone. Thus, by environmental dispatch, emissions can be reduced by dispatch of power generation to minimize emissions. The environmental/economic dispatch problem has been most commonly solved using a deterministic approach. However, power generated, system loads, fuel cost and emission coefficients are subjected to inaccuracies and uncertainties in real-world situations. In this paper, the problem is tackled using both deterministic and stochastic approaches of different complexities. The Nondominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm – II (NSGA-II), an elitist multiobjective evolutionary algorithm capable of finding multiple Pareto-optimal solutions with good diversity in one single run is used for solving the environmental/economic dispatch problem. Simulation results are presented for the standard IEEE 30-bus system.
