Towards auto-documentary: Tracking the evolution of news stories
News videos constitute an important source of information for tracking and documenting important events. In these videos, news stories are often accompanied by short video shots that tend to be repeated during the course of the event. Automatic detection of such repetitions is essential for creating auto-documentaries, for alleviating the limitation of traditional textual topic detection methods. In this paper, we propose novel methods for detecting and tracking the evolution of news over time. The proposed method exploits both visual cues and textual information to summarize evolving news stories. Experiments are carried on the TREC-VID data set consisting of 120 hours of news videos from two different channels
Topological and topological-electronic correlations in amorphous silicon
In this paper, we study several structural models of amorphous silicon, and
discuss structural and electronic features common to all. We note spatial
correlations between short bonds, and similar correlations between long bonds.
Such effects persist under a first principles relaxation of the system and at
finite temperature. Next we explore the nature of the band tail states and find
the states to possess a filamentary structure. We detail correlations between
local geometry and the band tails.Comment: 7 pages, 11 figures, submitted to Journal of Crystalline Solid
Optimal filtering of the LISA data
The LISA time-delay-interferometry responses to a gravitational-wave signal
are rewritten in a form that accounts for the motion of the LISA constellation
around the Sun; the responses are given in closed analytic forms valid for any
frequency in the band accessible to LISA. We then present a complete procedure,
based on the principle of maximum likelihood, to search for stellar-mass binary
systems in the LISA data. We define the required optimal filters, the
amplitude-maximized detection statistic (analogous to the F statistic used in
pulsar searches with ground-based interferometers), and discuss the false-alarm
and detection probabilities. We test the procedure in numerical simulations of
gravitational-wave detection.Comment: RevTeX4, 28 pages, 9 EPS figures. Minus signs fixed in Eq. (46) and

Network structure and dynamics of hydrogenated amorphous silicon
In this paper we discuss the application of current it ab initio computer
simulation techniques to hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H). We begin by
discussing thermal fluctuation in the number of coordination defects in the
material, and its temperature dependence. We connect this to the ``fluctuating
bond center detachment" mechanism for liberating H bonded to Si atoms. Next,
from extended thermal MD simulation, we illustrate various mechanisms of H
motion. The dynamics of the lattice is then linked to the electrons, and we
point out that the squared electron-lattice coupling (and the thermally-induced
mean square variation in electron energy eigenvalues) is robustly proportional
to the localization of the conjugate state, if localization is measured with
inverse participation ratio. Finally we discuss the Staebler-Wronski effect
using these methods, and argue that a sophisticated local heating picture
(based upon reasonable calculations of the electron-lattice coupling and
molecular dynamic simulation) explains significant aspects of the phenomenon.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, accepted in J. Non. Cryst. So
Formation of Small-Scale Condensations in the Molecular Clouds via Thermal Instability
A systematic study of the linear thermal instability of a self-gravitating
magnetic molecular cloud is carried out for the case when the unperturbed
background is subject to local expansion or contraction. We consider the
ambipolar diffusion, or ion-neutral friction on the perturbed states. In this
way, we obtain a non-dimensional characteristic equation that reduces to the
prior characteristic equation in the non-gravitating stationary background. By
parametric manipulation of this characteristic equation, we conclude that there
are, not only oblate condensation forming solutions, but also prolate solutions
according to local expansion or contraction of the background. We obtain the
conditions for existence of the Field lengths that thermal instability in the
molecular clouds can occur. If these conditions establish, small-scale
condensations in the form of spherical, oblate, or prolate may be produced via
thermal instability.Comment: 16 page, accepted by Ap&S
Microwave conductivity of YBaCuO including inelastic scattering
The fluctuation spectrum responsible for the inelastic scattering in
YBaCuO which was recently determined from consideration of the
in-plane optical conductivity in the infrared, is used to calculate the
temperature dependence of the microwave conductivity at several measured
frequencies. Reasonable overall agreement can only be achieved if, in addition,
some impurity scattering is included within a model potential intermediate
between weak (Born) and strong (unitary) limit.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.
Production of entanglement in Raman three-level systems using feedback
We examine the theoretical limits of the generation of entanglement in a
damped coupled ion-cavity system using jump-based feedback. Using Raman
transitions to produce entanglement between ground states reduces the necessary
feedback bandwidth, but does not improve the overall effect of the spontaneous
emission on the final entanglement. We find that the fidelity of the resulting
entanglement will be limited by the asymmetries produced by vibrations in the
trap, but that the concurrence remains above 0.88 for realistic ion trap sizes.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figure
Free flux flow resistivity in strongly overdoped high-T_c cuprate; purely viscous motion of the vortices in semiclassical d-wave superconductor
We report the free flux flow (FFF) resistivity associated with a purely
viscous motion of the vortices in moderately clean d-wave superconductor
Bi:2201 in the strongly overdoped regime (T_c=16K) for a wide range of the
magnetic field in the vortex state. The FFF resistivity is obtained by
measuring the microwave surface impedance at different microwave frequencies.
It is found that the FFF resistivity is remarkably different from that of
conventional s-wave superconductors. At low fields (H<0.2H_c2) the FFF
resistivity increases linearly with H with a coefficient which is far larger
than that found in conventional s-wave superconductors. At higher fields, the
FFF resistivity increases in proportion to \sqrt H up to H_c2. Based on these
results, the energy dissipation mechanism associated with the viscous vortex
motion in "semiclassical" d-wave superconductors with gap nodes is discussed.
Two possible scenarios are put forth for these field dependence; the
enhancement of the quasiparticle relaxation rate and the reduction of the
number of the quasiparticles participating the energy dissipation in d-wave
vortex state.Comment: 9 pages 7 figures, to appear in Phys. Rev.
Josephson Current in the Presence of a Precessing Spin
The Josephson current in the presence of a precessing spin between various
types of superconductors is studied. It is shown that the Josephson current
flowing between two spin-singlet pairing superconductors is not modulated by
the precession of the spin. When both superconductors have equal-spin-triplet
pairing state, the flowing Josephson current is modulated with twice of the
Larmor frequency by the precessing spin. It was also found that up to the
second tunneling matrix elements, no Josephson current can occur with only a
direct exchange interaction between the localized spin and the conduction
electrons, if the two superconductors have different spin-parity pairing
states.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figur
Quasiparticle excitation in and around the vortex core of underdoped YBa_2Cu_4O_8 studied by site-selective NMR
We report a site-selective ^{17}O spin-lattice relaxation rate T_1^{-1} in
the vortex state of underdoped YBa_2Cu_4O_8. We found that T_1^{-1} at the
planar sites exhibits an unusual nonmonotonic NMR frequency dependence. In the
region well outside the vortex core, T_1^{-1} cannot be simply explained by the
density of states of the Doppler-shifted quasiparticles in the d-wave
superconductor. Based on T_1^{-1} in the vortex core region, we establish
strong evidence that the local density of states within the vortex core is
strongly reduced.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
