    The effect of swimsuit resistance on freestyle swimming race time.

    It is known that swimming equipment (suit, cap and goggles) can affect the total resistance of a swimmer, and therefore impact the resulting swimming speed and race time. After the 2009 swimming world championships (WC) the international swimming federation (FINA) banned a specific type of full body suit, which resulted in an increase in race times for subsequent WC events. This study proposes that the 2009 suits provided a reduction in swimming resistance and aims to quantify this resistance reduction for male and female freestyle events. Due to the practical difficulties of testing a large sample of swimmers a simulation approach is adopted. To quantify the race time improvement that the 2009 suits provided, an equivalent 2009 “no-suit” dataset is created, incorporating the general trend of improving swimming performance over time, and compared to the actual 2009 times. A full race simulation is developed where the start, turn, underwater and surface swimming phases are captured. Independent resistance models are used for surface and underwater swimming; coupled with a leg propulsion model for underwater undulatory swimming and freestyle flutter kick, and a single element arm model to simulate freestyle arm propulsion. A validation is performed to ensure the simulation captures the change in swimming speed with changes to resistance and is found to be within 5% of reality. Race times for an equivalent “no-suit” 2009 situation are simulated and the total resistance reduced to achieve the actual 2009 race times. A new method is presented, offering improved accuracy in both damping resistance and resonant frequency extraction compared with state-of-the-art methods.     Moments of vicious walkers and M\"obius graph expansions

    A system of Brownian motions in one-dimension all started from the origin and conditioned never to collide with each other in a given finite time-interval (0,T](0, T] is studied. The spatial distribution of such vicious walkers can be described by using the repulsive eigenvalue-statistics of random Hermitian matrices and it was shown that the present vicious walker model exhibits a transition from the Gaussian unitary ensemble (GUE) statistics to the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble (GOE) statistics as the time tt is going on from 0 to TT. In the present paper, we characterize this GUE-to-GOE transition by presenting the graphical expansion formula for the moments of positions of vicious walkers. In the GUE limit t0t \to 0, only the ribbon graphs contribute and the problem is reduced to the classification of orientable surfaces by genus. Following the time evolution of the vicious walkers, however, the graphs with twisted ribbons, called M\"obius graphs, increase their contribution to our expansion formula, and we have to deal with the topology of non-orientable surfaces.     Soft switching voltage regulation for inductorless piezoelectric transformers: a cyclic mode analysis

    This paper describes a novel methodology for predicting the ability of an inductorless driven piezoelectric transformer (PT)-based H-bridge inverters to simultaneously achieve zero-voltage switching and output regulation. A new idea for output voltage regulation by controlling deadtime interval is presented. A model is derived using cyclic-mode analysis to estimate the state-variable parameters of the circuit for a given operating condition. The model is then used to demonstrate operation in the zero-voltage switching (ZVS) region and to estimate the deadtime period, load and operating frequency along the ZVS boundary. The output voltage regulation profile is presented and regions where voltage regulation can be continuously achieved while still obtaining ZVS are shown. Both SPICE simulation and experimental results taken using a ring-dot radial-mode PT are presented as verification. The proposed method for a H-bridge PT-based inverter is able to achieve a 5V output from 15V-60V input with simultaneous ZVS and voltage regulation

    Under-reporting of dietary energy intake in five populations of the African diaspora.

    Studies on the role of diet in the development of chronic diseases often rely on self-report surveys of dietary intake. Unfortunately, many validity studies have demonstrated that self-reported dietary intake is subject to systematic under-reporting, although the vast majority of such studies have been conducted in industrialised countries. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether or not systematic reporting error exists among the individuals of African ancestry (n 324) in five countries distributed across the Human Development Index (HDI) scale, a UN statistic devised to rank countries on non-income factors plus economic indicators. Using two 24 h dietary recalls to assess energy intake and the doubly labelled water method to assess total energy expenditure, we calculated the difference between these two values ((self-report - expenditure/expenditure) × 100) to identify under-reporting of habitual energy intake in selected communities in Ghana, South Africa, Seychelles, Jamaica and the USA. Under-reporting of habitual energy intake was observed in all the five countries. The South African cohort exhibited the highest mean under-reporting ( - 52·1% of energy) compared with the cohorts of Ghana ( - 22·5%), Jamaica ( - 17·9%), Seychelles ( - 25·0%) and the USA ( - 18·5%). BMI was the most consistent predictor of under-reporting compared with other predictors. In conclusion, there is substantial under-reporting of dietary energy intake in populations across the whole range of the HDI, and this systematic reporting error increases according to the BMI of an individual

    Elevated hypertension risk for African-origin populations in biracial societies : Modeling the Epidemiologic Transition Study.

    OBJECTIVES: Blood pressures in persons of African descent exceed those of other racial/ethnic groups in the United States. Whether this trait is attributable to the genetic factors in African-origin populations, or a result of inadequately measured environmental exposures, such as racial discrimination, is not known. To study this question, we conducted a multisite comparative study of communities in the African diaspora, drawn from metropolitan Chicago, Kingston, Jamaica, rural Ghana, Cape Town, South Africa, and the Seychelles. METHODS: At each site, 500 participants between the age of 25 and 49 years, with approximately equal sex balance, were enrolled for a longitudinal study of energy expenditure and weight gain. In this study, we describe the patterns of blood pressure and hypertension observed at baseline among the sites. RESULTS: Mean SBP and DBP were very similar in the United States and South Africa in both men and women, although among women, the prevalence of hypertension was higher in the United States (24 vs. 17%, respectively). After adjustment for multiple covariates, relative to participants in the United States, SBP was significantly higher among the South Africans by 9.7 mmHg (P < 0.05) and significantly lower for each of the other sites: for example, Jamaica: -7.9 mmHg (P = 0.06), Ghana: -12.8 mmHg (P < 0.01) and Seychelles: -11.1 mmHg (P = 0.01). CONCLUSION: These data are consistent with prior findings of a blood pressure gradient in societies of the African diaspora and confirm that African-origin populations with lower social status in multiracial societies, such as the United States and South Africa, experience more hypertension than anticipated based on anthropometric and measurable socioeconomic risk factors

    Glassy Vortex State in a Two-Dimensional Disordered XY-Model

    The two-dimensional XY-model with random phase-shifts on bonds is studied. The analysis is based on a renormalization group for the replicated system. The model is shown to have an ordered phase with quasi long-range order. This ordered phase consists of a glass-like region at lower temperatures and of a non-glassy region at higher temperatures. The transition from the disordered phase into the ordered phase is not reentrant and is of a new universality class at zero temperature. In contrast to previous approaches the disorder strength is found to be renormalized to larger values. Several correlation functions are calculated for the ordered phase. They allow to identify not only the transition into the glassy phase but also an additional crossover line, where the disconnected vortex correlation changes its behavior on large scales non-analytically.     Diagnostic and prognostic significance of systemic alkyl quinolones for P. aeruginosa in cystic fibrosis: a longitudinal study

    Background Pulmonary P. aeruginosa infection is associated with poor outcomes in cystic fibrosis (CF) and early diagnosis is challenging, particularly in those who are unable to expectorate sputum. Specific P. aeruginosa 2-alkyl-4-quinolones are detectable in the sputum, plasma and urine of adults with CF, suggesting that they have potential as biomarkers for P. aeruginosa infection. Aim To investigate systemic 2-alkyl-4-quinolones as potential biomarkers for pulmonary P. aeruginosa infection. Methods A multicentre observational study of 176 adults and 68 children with CF. Cross-sectionally, comparisons were made between current P. aeruginosa infection using six 2-alkyl-4-quinolones detected in sputum, plasma and urine against hospital microbiological culture results. All participants without P. aeruginosa infection at baseline were followed up for one year to determine if 2-alkyl-4-quinolones were early biomarkers of pulmonary P. aeruginosa infection. Results Cross-sectional analysis: the most promising biomarker with the greatest diagnostic accuracy was 2-heptyl-4-hydroxyquinoline (HHQ). In adults, areas under the ROC curves (95% confidence intervals) for HHQ analyses were 0.82 (0.75–0.89) in sputum, 0.76 (0.69–0.82) in plasma and 0.82 (0.77–0.88) in urine. In children, the corresponding values for HHQ analyses were 0.88 (0.77–0.99) in plasma and 0.83 (0.68–0.97) in urine. Longitudinal analysis: Ten adults and six children had a new positive respiratory culture for P. aeruginosa in follow-up. A positive plasma HHQ test at baseline was significantly associated with a new positive culture for P. aeruginosa in both adults and children in follow-up (odds ratio (OR) = 6.67;-95% CI:-1.48–30.1;-p = 0.01 and OR = 70; 95% CI: 5–956;-p < 0.001 respectively). Conclusions AQs measured in sputum, plasma and urine may be used to diagnose current infection with P. aeruginosa in adults and children with CF. These preliminary data show that plasma HHQ may have potential as an early biomarker of pulmonary P. aeruginosa. Further studies are necessary to evaluate if HHQ could be used in clinical practice to aid early diagnosis of P. aeruginosa infection in the future

    Vicious walk with a wall, noncolliding meanders, and chiral and Bogoliubov-deGennes random matrices

    Spatially and temporally inhomogeneous evolution of one-dimensional vicious walkers with wall restriction is studied. We show that its continuum version is equivalent with a noncolliding system of stochastic processes called Brownian meanders. Here the Brownian meander is a temporally inhomogeneous process introduced by Yor as a transform of the Bessel process that is a motion of radial coordinate of the three-dimensional Brownian motion represented in the spherical coordinates. It is proved that the spatial distribution of vicious walkers with a wall at the origin can be described by the eigenvalue-statistics of Gaussian ensembles of Bogoliubov-deGennes Hamiltonians of the mean-field theory of superconductivity, which have the particle-hole symmetry. We report that the time evolution of the present stochastic process is fully characterized by the change of symmetry classes from the type CC to the type CCI in the nonstandard classes of random matrix theory of Altland and Zirnbauer. The relation between the non-colliding systems of the generalized meanders of Yor, which are associated with the even-dimensional Bessel processes, and the chiral random matrix theory is also clarified.Comment: REVTeX4, 16 pages, 4 figures. v2: some additions and correction
