Online Forum Thread Retrieval using Pseudo Cluster Selection and Voting Techniques
Online forums facilitate knowledge seeking and sharing on the Web. However,
the shared knowledge is not fully utilized due to information overload. Thread
retrieval is one method to overcome information overload. In this paper, we
propose a model that combines two existing approaches: the Pseudo Cluster
Selection and the Voting Techniques. In both, a retrieval system first scores a
list of messages and then ranks threads by aggregating their scored messages.
They differ on what and how to aggregate. The pseudo cluster selection focuses
on input, while voting techniques focus on the aggregation method. Our combined
models focus on the input and the aggregation methods. The result shows that
some combined models are statistically superior to baseline methods.Comment: The original publication is available at

A Resolvent Approach to Metastability
We provide a necessary and sufficient condition for the metastability of a
Markov chain, expressed in terms of a property of the solutions of the
resolvent equation. As an application of this result, we prove the
metastability of reversible, critical zero-range processes starting from a
configuration
Metallic characteristics in superlattices composed of insulators, NdMnO3/SrMnO3/LaMnO3
We report on the electronic properties of superlattices composed of three
different antiferromagnetic insulators, NdMnO3/SrMnO3/LaMnO3 grown on SrTiO3
substrates. Photoemission spectra obtained by tuning the x-ray energy at the Mn
2p -> 3d edge show a Fermi cut-off, indicating metallic behavior mainly
originating from Mn e_g electrons. Furthermore, the density of states near the
Fermi energy and the magnetization obey a similar temperature dependence,
suggesting a correlation between the spin and charge degrees of freedom at the
interfaces of these oxides
Epitaxial growth and the magnetic properties of orthorhombic YTiO3 thin films
High-quality YTiO3 thin films were grown on LaAlO3 (110) substrates at low
oxygen pressures (<10-8 Torr) using pulsed laser deposition. The in-plane
asymmetric atomic arrangements at the substrate surface allowed us to grow
epitaxial YTiO3 thin films, which have an orthorhombic crystal structure with
quite different a- and b-axes lattice constants. The YTiO3 film exhibited a
clear ferromagnetic transition at 30 K with a saturation magnetization of about
0.7 uB/Ti. The magnetic easy axis was found to be along the [1-10] direction of
the substrate, which differs from the single crystal easy axis direction, i.e.,

A statistical post-processor for accounting of hydrologic uncertainty in short-range ensemble streamflow prediction
International audienceIn addition to the uncertainty in future boundary conditions of precipitation and temperature (i.e. the meteorological uncertainty), parametric and structural uncertainties in the hydrologic models and uncertainty in the model initial conditions (i.e. the hydrologic uncertainties) constitute a major source of error in hydrologic prediction. As such, accurate accounting of both meteorological and hydrologic uncertainties is critical to producing reliable probabilistic hydrologic prediction. In this paper, we describe and evaluate a statistical procedure that accounts for hydrologic uncertainty in short-range (1 to 5 days ahead) ensemble streamflow prediction (ESP). Referred to as the ESP post-processor, the procedure operates on ensemble traces of model-predicted streamflow that reflect only the meteorological uncertainty and produces post-processed ensemble traces that reflect both the meteorological and hydrologic uncertainties. A combination of probability matching and regression, the procedure is simple, parsimonious and robust. For a critical evaluation of the procedure, independent validation is carried out for five basins of the Juniata River in Pennsylvania, USA, under a very stringent setting. The results indicate that the post-processor is fully capable of producing ensemble traces that are unbiased in the mean and in the probabilistic sense. Due primarily to the uncertainties in the cumulative probability distributions (CDF) of observed and simulated flows, however, the unbiasedness may be compromised to a varying degree in real world situations. It is also shown, however, that the uncertainties in the CDF's do not significantly diminish the value of post-processed ensemble traces for decision making, and that probabilistic prediction based on post-processed ensemble traces significantly improves the value of single-value prediction at all ranges of flow
Spectroscopy of a narrow-line laser cooling transition in atomic dysprosium
The laser cooling and trapping of ultracold neutral dysprosium has been
recently demonstrated using the broad, open 421-nm cycling transition.
Narrow-line magneto-optical trapping of Dy on longer wavelength transitions
would enable the preparation of ultracold Dy samples suitable for loading
optical dipole traps and subsequent evaporative cooling. We have identified the
closed 741-nm cycling transition as a candidate for the narrow-line cooling of
Dy. We present experimental data on the isotope shifts, the hyperfine constants
A and B, and the decay rate of the 741-nm transition. In addition, we report a
measurement of the 421-nm transition's linewidth, which agrees with previous
measurements. We summarize the laser cooling characteristics of these
transitions as well as other narrow cycling transitions that may prove useful
