Chinese peasant entrepreneurs: an examination of township and village
One of the greatest achievements in China's economic reform is the development of rural township and village enterprises (TVEs). Their importance in the national economy can be seen from the fact that by the end of 1993, TVEs accounted for nearly one third of the agricultural labour force, and one fifth of the total labour force nationwide. Despite some research attention being given to Chinese TVEs, the peasant entrepreneurs, owners and /or managers of these enterprises have remained largely unknown in the West. Who are they? Where are they from? What are their unique characteristics which distinguish them from both managers in the state-owned Chinese enterprises (SOEs) and small business owners /entrepreneurs in the West? What environmental factors contribute to the shaping of these characteristics? What are the problems faced by them and the possible solutions? This paper addresses these questions
A two component jet model for the X-ray afterglow flat segment in short GRB 051221A
In the double neutron star merger or neutron star-black hole merger model for
short GRBs, the outflow launched might be mildly magnetized and neutron rich.
The magnetized neutron-rich outflow will be accelerated by the magnetic and
thermal pressure and may form a two component jet finally, as suggested by
Vlahakis, Peng & K\"{o}nigl (2003). We show in this work that such a two
component jet model could well reproduce the multi-wavelength afterglow
lightcurves, in particular the X-ray flat segment, of short GRB 051221A. In
this model, the central engine need not to be active much longer than the
prompt ray emission.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figure; Accepted for publication by ApJ
Early photon-shock interaction in stellar wind: sub-GeV photon flash and high energy neutrino emission from long GRBs
For gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) born in a stellar wind, as the reverse shock
crosses the ejecta, usually the shocked regions are still precipitated by the
prompt MeV \gamma-ray emission. Because of the tight overlapping of the MeV
photon flow with the shocked regions, the optical depth for the GeV photons
produced in the shocks is very large. These high energy photons are absorbed by
the MeV photon flow and generate relativistic e^\pm pairs. These pairs
re-scatter the soft X-ray photons from the forward shock as well as the prompt
\gamma-ray photons and power detectable high energy emission, significant part
of which is in the sub-GeV energy range. Since the total energy contained in
the forward shock region and the reverse shock region are comparable, the
predicted sub-GeV emission is independent on whether the GRB ejecta are
magnetized (in which case the reverse shock IC and synchrotron self-Compton
emission is suppressed). As a result, a sub-GeV flash is a generic signature
for the GRB wind model, and it should be typically detectable by the future
{\em Gamma-Ray Large Area Telescope} (GLAST). Overlapping also influence
neutrino emission. Besides the 10^{15} \sim 10^{17} eV neutrino emission
powered by the interaction of the shock accelerated protons with the
synchrotron photons in both the forward and reverse shock regions, there comes
another eV neutrino emission component powered by protons interacting
with the MeV photon flow. This last component has a similar spectrum to the one
generated in the internal shock phase, but the typical energy is slightly
lower.Comment: 7 pages, accepted for publication in Ap
Microstructural characteristics of diecast AlMgSiMn alloy
Solidification and microstructural characteristics of Al-5wt.%Mg-1.5wt.%Si-0.6wt.%Mn- 0.2wt.%Ti alloy have been investigated in high pressure die casting. The average size of dendrites and fragmented dendrites of the primary α-Al phase formed in the shot sleeve is 43μm, and the globular α-Al grains formed inside the die cavity is 7.5μm. Solidification inside the die cavity also forms the lamellar Al-Mg2Si eutectic phase and the Fe-rich intermetallics. The size of the eutectic cells is about 10μm, in which the lamellar α-Al phase is 0.41μm thick. The Fe-rich intermetallic compound exhibits a compact morphology and is less than 2μm. Calculations using the Mullins and Sekerka stability criterion reveal that the solidification of the primary α-Al phase inside the die cavity has completed before the spherical α-Al globules begin to lose their stability, but the α-Al grains formed in the shot sleeve exceed the limit of spherical growth and therefore exhibit a dendritic morphology
Cosmic Reionization On Computers. Properties of the Post-reionization IGM
We present a comparison between several observational tests of the
post-reionization IGM and the numerical simulations of reionization completed
under the Cosmic Reionization On Computers (CROC) project. The CROC simulations
match the gap distribution reasonably well, and also provide a good match for
the distribution of peak heights, but there is a notable lack of wide peaks in
the simulated spectra and the flux PDFs are poorly matched in the narrow
redshift interval 5.5<z<5.7, with the match at other redshifts being
significantly better, albeit not exact. Both discrepancies are related:
simulations show more opacity than the data.Comment: Accepted by Ap

Solidification commences with the formation of primary a-Al phase in the shot sleeve and is completed in the die cavity. The average size of dendrites and fragmented dendrites of the primary a-Al phase formed in the shot sleeve is 43 lm, and the globular primary a-Al grains formed inside the die cavity is at a size of 7.5 lm. Solidification inside the die cavity also forms the lamellar Al-Mg2Si eutectic phase and the Fe-rich intermetallics. The size of the eutectic cells is about 10 lm, in
which the lamellar a-Al phase is 0.41 lm thick. The Fe-rich intermetallic compound exhibits a compact morphology and is less than 2 lm with a composition of 1.62 at. pct Si, 3.94 at. pct Fe, and 2.31 at. pct Mn. A solute-enriched circular band is always observed parallel to the surface of
the casting. The band zone separates the outer skin region from the central region of the casting. The solute concentration is consistent in the skin region and shows a general drop toward the center inside the band for Mg and Si. The peak of the solute enrichment in the band zone is much higher than the nominal composition of the alloy. The die casting exhibits a combination
of brittle and ductile fracture. There is no significant difference on the fracture morphology in the three regions. The band zone is not significantly detrimental in terms of the fracture mechanism in the die casting. Calculations using the Mullins and Sekerka stability criterion reveal that the solidification of the primary a-Al phase inside the die cavity has been completed
before the spherical a-Al globules begin to lose their stability, but the a-Al grains formed in the shot sleeve exceed the limit of spherical growth and therefore exhibit a dendritic morphologyEPSRC and JL
The composition of heavy ions in solar energetic particle events
Recent advances in determining the elemental, charge state, and isotopic composition of or approximate to 1 to or approximate to 20 MeV per nucleon ions in solar energetic particle (SEP) events and outline our current understanding of the nature of solar and interplanetary processes which may explain the observations. Average values of relative abundances measured in a large number of SEP events were found to be roughly energy independent in the approx. 1 to approx. 20 MeV per nucleon range, and showed a systematic deviation from photospheric abundances which seems to be organized in terms of the first ionization potential of the ion. Direct measurements of the charge states of SEPs revealed the surprisingly common presence of energetic He(+) along with heavy ion with typically coronal ionization states. High resolution measurements of isotopic abundance ratios in a small number of SEP events showed these to be consistent with the universal composition except for the puzzling overabundance of the SEP(22)Ne/(20)Ne relative to this isotopes ratio in the solar wind. The broad spectrum of observed elemental abundance variations, which in their extreme result in composition anomalies characteristic of (3)He rich, heavy ion rich and carbon poor SEP events, along with direct measurements of the ionization states of SEPs provided essential information on the physical characteristics of, and conditions in the source regions, as well as important constraints to possible models for SEP production
Strong GeV Emission Accompanying TeV Blazar H1426+428
For High frequency BL Lac objects (HBLs) like H1426+428, a significant
fraction of their TeV gamma-rays emitted are likely to be absorbed in
interactions with the diffuse IR background, yielding pairs. The
resulting pairs generate one hitherto undiscovered GeV emission by
inverse Compton scattering with the cosmic microwave background photons
(CMBPs). We study such emission by taking the 1998-2000 CAT data, the
reanalyzed 1999 & 2000 HEGRA data and the corresponding intrinsic spectra
proposed by Aharonian et al. (2003a). We numerically calculate the scattered
photon spectra for different intergalactic magnetic field (IGMF) strengths. If
the IGMF is about or weaker, there comes very strong GeV
emission, whose flux is far above the detection sensitivity of the upcoming
satellite GLAST! Considered its relatively high redshift (), the
detected GeV emission in turn provides us a valuable chance to calibrate the
poor known spectral energy distribution of the intergalactic infrared
background, or provides us some reliable constraints on the poorly known IGMF
strength.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure. A&A in Pres
