Prostate involvement during sexually transmitted infections as measured by prostate-specific antigen concentration

    Get PDF
Background:We investigated prostate involvement during sexually transmitted infections by measuring serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) as a marker of prostate infection, inflammation, and/or cell damage in young, male US military members. Methods:We measured PSA before and during infection for 299 chlamydia, 112 gonorrhoea, and 59 non-chlamydial, non-gonococcal urethritis (NCNGU) cases, and 256 controls. Results:Chlamydia and gonorrhoea, but not NCNGU, cases were more likely to have a large rise (â©ľ40%) in PSA than controls (33.6%, 19.1%, and 8.2% vs 8.8%, P<0.0001, 0.021, and 0.92, respectively). Conclusion:Chlamydia and gonorrhoea may infect the prostate of some infected men

Inversion symmetric 3-monopoles and the Atiyah-Hitchin manifold

    Get PDF
We consider 3-monopoles symmetric under inversion symmetry. We show that the moduli space of these monopoles is an Atiyah-Hitchin submanifold of the 3-monopole moduli space. This allows what is known about 2-monopole dynamics to be translated into results about the dynamics of 3-monopoles. Using a numerical ADHMN construction we compute the monopole energy density at various points on two interesting geodesics. The first is a geodesic over the two-dimensional rounded cone submanifold corresponding to right angle scattering and the second is a closed geodesic for three orbiting monopoles.Comment: latex, 22 pages, 2 figures. A Vernacular for Coherent Logic

We propose a simple, yet expressive proof representation from which proofs for different proof assistants can easily be generated. The representation uses only a few inference rules and is based on a frag- ment of first-order logic called coherent logic. Coherent logic has been recognized by a number of researchers as a suitable logic for many ev- eryday mathematical developments. The proposed proof representation is accompanied by a corresponding XML format and by a suite of XSL transformations for generating formal proofs for Isabelle/Isar and Coq, as well as proofs expressed in a natural language form (formatted in LATEX or in HTML). Also, our automated theorem prover for coherent logic exports proofs in the proposed XML format. All tools are publicly available, along with a set of sample theorems.Comment: CICM 2014 - Conferences on Intelligent Computer Mathematics (2014

Human ApoD, an apolipoprotein up-regulated in neurodegenerative diseases, extends lifespan and increases stress resistance in Drosophila

    Get PDF
Apolipoprotein D (ApoD) expression increases in several neurological disorders and in spinal cord injury. We provide a report of a physiological role for human ApoD (hApoD): Flies overexpressing hApoD are long-lived and protected against stress conditions associated with aging and neurodegeneration, including hyperoxia, dietary paraquat, and heat stress. We show that the fly ortholog, Glial Lazarillo, is strongly up-regulated in response to these extrinsic stresses and also can protect in vitro-cultured cells in situations modeling Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD). In adult flies, hApoD overexpression reduces age-associated lipid peroxide accumulation, suggesting a proximal mechanism of action. Similar data obtained in the mouse [Ganfornina, M.D., et al., (2008) Apolipoprotein D is involved in the mechanisms regulating protection from oxidative stress. Aging Cell 10.1111/j.1474-9726.2008.00395.] as well as in plants (Charron et al., personal communication) suggest that ApoD and its orthologs play an evolutionarily conserved role in response to stress, possibly managing or preventing lipid peroxidation

The impact of inclusiveness on resilience in Temporary Multidisciplinary Organizations (TMO)

    Get PDF
One of the enablers of organizational resilience is inclusiveness. Inclusiveness is the process of valuing, respecting and supporting members of an entity. Resilience in permanent organizations can be defined as the capability to respond to and prepare for disruption and thus, promote business continuity. On the other hand, resilience in Temporary Multidisciplinary Organizations (TMO) can be defined as the capability to respond to, prepare for and reduce the impact of disruptions caused by the drifting environment and complexity. A construction project can be viewed as a TMO. The time-limit and contract-focus of TMO challenges inclusiveness and hence makes its impact on resilience in TMO, unclear. Given the dynamic nature of TMOs (highly susceptible to disruptions), there is the need to identify the impact of inclusiveness, thus, the aim of this research. Using a case study approach (two case studies) and critical incident technique, it was identified that the TMO in which inclusiveness was actively promoted responded better to disruptions. This was enabled by project managers, directors and the project execution plan. The identified impact of inclusiveness in managing disruptions were; time and cost savings, innovation and quality enhancement. These findings contribute to debates on disruption management in TMOs (projects)

On the (almost) stochastic dominance of cryptocurrency factor portfolios and implications for cryptocurrency asset pricing

This is the final version. Available on open access from Wiley via the DOI in this recordData availability statement: Data are available from the authors on request, with the caveat that requestors should also be subscribers to parts of the dataset that are derived from commercial providers that require subscription, such as CRSP.Cryptocurrency returns are highly nonnormal, casting doubt on the standard performance metrics. We apply almost stochastic dominance, which does not require any assumption about the return distribution or degree of risk aversion. From 29 long–short cryptocurrency factor portfolios, we find eight that dominate our four benchmarks. Their returns cannot be fully explained by the three-factor coin model of Liu et al. So we develop a new three-factor model where momentum is replaced by a mispricing factor based on size and risk-adjusted momentum, which significantly improves pricing performance

Pharmacokinetics, pharmacological and anti-tumour effects of the specific anti-oestrogen ICI 182780 in women with advanced breast cancer.

We have assessed the pharmacokinetics, pharmacological and anti-tumour effects of the specific steroidal anti-oestrogen ICI 182780 in 19 patients with advanced breast cancer resistant to tamoxifen. The agent was administered as a monthly depot intramuscular injection. Peak levels of ICI 182780 occurred a median of 8-9 days after dosing and then declined but were above the projected therapeutic threshold at day 28. Cmax during the first month was 10.5 ng/ml-1 and during the sixth month was 12.6 ng ml-1. The AUCs were 140.5 and 206.8 ng day ml-1 on the first and sixth month of dosing respectively, suggesting some drug accumulation. Luteinising hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) levels rose after withdrawal of tamoxifen and then plateaued, suggesting no effect of ICI 182780 on the pituitary-hypothalamic axis. There were no significant changes in serum levels of prolactin, sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) or lipids. Side-effects were infrequent. Hot-flushes and sweats were not induced and there was no apparent effect of treatment upon the endometrium or vagina. Thirteen (69%) patients responded (seven had partial responses and six showed "no change' responses) to ICI 182780, after progression on tamoxifen, for a median duration of 25 months. Thus ICI 182780, given by monthly depot injection, and at the drug levels described, is an active second-line anti-oestrogen without apparent negative effects on the liver, brain or genital tract and warrants further evaluation in patients with advanced breast cancer

    Symmetric Skyrmions

    Get PDF
We present candidates for the global minimum energy solitons of charge one to nine in the Skyrme model, generated using sophisticated numerical algorithms. Assuming the Skyrme model accurately represents the low energy limit of QCD, these configurations correspond to the classical nuclear ground states of the light elements. The solitons found are particularly symmetric, for example, the charge seven skyrmion has icosahedral symmetry, and the shapes are shown to fit a remarkable sequence defined by a geometric energy minimization (GEM) rule. We also calculate the energies and sizes to within at least a few percent accuracy. These calculations provide the basis for a future investigation of the low energy vibrational modes of skyrmions and hence the possibility of testing the Skyrme model against experiment.Comment: latex, 9 pages, 1 figure (fig1.gif

Proving Type Class Laws for Haskell

Type classes in Haskell are used to implement ad-hoc polymorphism, i.e. a way to ensure both to the programmer and the compiler that a set of functions are defined for a specific data type. All instances of such type classes are expected to behave in a certain way and satisfy laws associated with the respective class. These are however typically just stated in comments and as such, there is no real way to enforce that they hold. In this paper we describe a system which allows the user to write down type class laws which are then automatically instantiated and sent to an inductive theorem prover when declaring a new instance of a type class.Comment: Presented at the Symposium for Trends in Functional Programming, 201
