Symbolic algorithms for the Painlevé test, special solutions, and recursion operators for nonlinear PDEs

This paper discusses the algorithms and implementations of three MATHEMATICA packages for the study of integrability and the computation of closed-form solutions of nonlinear polynomial PDEs. The first package, PainleveTest.m, symbolically performs the Painlevé integrability test. The second package, PDESpecialSolutions.m, computes exact solutions expressible in hyperbolic or elliptic functions. The third package, PDERecursionOperator.m, generates and tests recursion operators

Large wind turbines: A utility option for the generation of electricity

    Get PDF
The wind resource is such that wind energy generation has the potential to save 6-7 quads of energy nationally. Thus, the Federal Government is sponsoring and encouraging the development of cost effective and reliable wind turbines. One element of the Federal Wind Energy Programs, Large Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine Development, is managed by the NASA Lewis Research Center for the Department of Energy. There are several ongoing wind system development projects oriented primarily toward utility application within this program element. In addition, a comprehensive technology program supporting the wind turbine development projects is being conducted. An overview is presented of the NASA activities with emphasis on application of large wind turbines for generation of electricity by utility systems

The economic and technical potential of wind energy in the United States is discussed. Particular attention is given to the status of wind turbine operational experience as well as the environmental posture of the technology

Anisotropic Fermi Contour of (001) GaAs Holes in Parallel Magnetic Fields

We report a severe, spin-dependent, Fermi contour anisotropy induced by parallel magnetic field in a high-mobility (001) GaAs two-dimensional hole system. Employing commensurability oscillations created by a unidirectional, surface-strain-induced, periodic potential modulation, we directly probe the anisotropy of the two spin subband Fermi contours. Their areas are obtained from the Fourier transform of the Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations. Our findings are in semi-quantitative agreement with the results of parameter-free calculations of the energy bands.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

Mixing effectiveness in the Apollo oxygen tanks of spin-up and rotation-reversal maneuvers

    Get PDF
Two-dimensional simulations of stratified flows in the Apollo oxygen tanks have been used to estimate the mixing effectiveness of spin-up and rotation-reversal maneuvers. Calculations have been made for square and circular cylindrical tank geometries. Differences arising from heater position on the tank wall or near the center of the tank have been investigated. In the event of a prolonged period without normal maneuvers, the potential pressure decay (drop in pressure that would result from adiabatic mixing) can be suppressed by more than a factor of two through the use of spin-up and rotation-reversal maneuvers. Changes in rotation rate of order three revolutions per hour or greater are sufficient for this purpose
