Small World Graphs by the iterated "My Friends are Your Friends'' Principle
We study graphs obtained by successive creation and destruction of edges into
small neighborhoods of the vertices. Starting with a circle graph of large
diameter we obtain small world graphs with logarithmic diameter, high
clustering coefficients and a fat tail distribution for the degree. Only local
edge formation processes are involved and no preferential attachment was used.
Furthermore we found an interesting phase transition with respect to the

Detection of K+ mesons in segmented electromagnetic calorimeters
The combination of the CrystalBall and TAPS electromagnetic calorimeters were installed in the MAMI A2 hall in 2003. Here they are able to detect the reaction products from photo-induced reactions in combination with the Glasgow photon tagger. In the last two years the MAMI facility was upgraded from 885 MeV to 1.5 GeV, the A2 photon tagger underwent a similar upgrade crossing the threshold for strangeness photoproduction. For the CrystalBall this created a new challenge, to identify K+ mesons above the large background from other charged hadrons, in a situation where the detector setup does not benefit from a magnetic field to help separate particle species. Indications for a slow rotator in the Rapid Burster from its thermonuclear bursting behaviour
We perform time-resolved spectroscopy of all the type I bursts from the Rapid
Burster (MXB 1730-335) detected with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer. Type I
bursts are detected at high accretion rates, up to \sim 45% of the Eddington
luminosity. We find evidence that bursts lacking the canonical cooling in their
time-resolved spectra are, none the less, thermonuclear in nature. The type I
bursting rate keeps increasing with the persistent luminosity, well above the
threshold at which it is known to abruptly drop in other bursting low-mass
X-ray binaries. The only other known source in which the bursting rate keeps
increasing over such a large range of mass accretion rates is the 11 Hz pulsar
IGR J174802446. This may indicate a similarly slow spin for the neutron star
in the Rapid Burster
Defining Landscape Resistance Values in Least-Cost Connectivity Models for the Invasive Grey Squirrel: A Comparison of Approaches Using Expert-Opinion and Habitat Suitability Modelling
Least-cost models are widely used to study the functional connectivity of habitat within a varied landscape matrix. A critical step in the process is identifying resistance values for each land cover based upon the facilitating or impeding impact on species movement. Ideally resistance values would be parameterised with empirical data, but due to a shortage of such information, expert-opinion is often used. However, the use of expert-opinion is seen as subjective, human-centric and unreliable. This study derived resistance values from grey squirrel habitat suitability models (HSM) in order to compare the utility and validity of this approach with more traditional, expert-led methods. Models were built and tested with MaxEnt, using squirrel presence records and a categorical land cover map for Cumbria, UK. Predictions on the likelihood of squirrel occurrence within each land cover type were inverted, providing resistance values which were used to parameterise a leastcost model. The resulting habitat networks were measured and compared to those derived from a least-cost model built with previously collated information from experts. The expert-derived and HSM-inferred least-cost networks differ in precision. The HSM-informed networks were smaller and more fragmented because of the higher resistance values attributed to most habitats. These results are discussed in relation to the applicability of both approaches for conservation and management objectives, providing guidance to researchers and practitioners attempting to apply and interpret a leastcost approach to mapping ecological networks.This project was funded by the Forestry Commission GB and the National School of Forestry at the University of Cumbria. Using GPS telemetry to validate least-cost modeling of gray squirrel ( Sciurus carolinensis) movement within a fragmented landscape
In Britain, the population of native red squirrels Sciurus vulgaris has suffered population declines and local extinctions. Interspecific resource competition and disease spread by the invasive gray squirrel Sciurus carolinensis are the main factors behind the decline. Gray squirrels have adapted to the British landscape so efficiently that they are widely distributed. Knowledge on how gray squirrels are using the landscape matrix and being able to predict their movements will aid management. This study is the first to use global positioning system (GPS) collars on wild gray squirrels to accurately record movements and land cover use within the landscape matrix. This data were used to validate Geographical Information System (GIS) least-cost model predictions of movements and provided much needed information on gray squirrel movement pathways and network use. Buffered least-cost paths and least-cost corridors provide predictions of the most probable movements through the landscape and are seen to perform better than the more expansive least-cost networks which include all possible movements. Applying the knowledge and methodologies gained to current gray squirrel expansion areas, such as Scotland and in Italy, will aid in the prediction of potential movement areas and therefore management of the invasive gray squirrel. The methodologies presented in this study could potentially be used in any landscape and on numerous species

The Spread of Opinions and Proportional Voting
Election results are determined by numerous social factors that affect the
formation of opinion of the voters, including the network of interactions
between them and the dynamics of opinion influence. In this work we study the
result of proportional elections using an opinion dynamics model similar to
simple opinion spreading over a complex network. Erdos-Renyi, Barabasi-Albert,
regular lattices and randomly augmented lattices are considered as models of
the underlying social networks. The model reproduces the power law behavior of
number of candidates with a given number of votes found in real elections with
the correct slope, a cutoff for larger number of votes and a plateau for small
number of votes. It is found that the small world property of the underlying
network is fundamental for the emergence of the power law regime.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figure
Characterization of 40-Gbit/s pulses generated using a lithium niobate modulator at 1550 nm using frequency resolved optical gating
The characteristics of 40-Gbit/s pulses generated by exploiting the nonlinear characteristics of a Mach-Zender Lithium Niobate modulator are presented. A high spectral resolution frequency resolved optical gating apparatus has been developed to allow for the complete characterization of the intensity and phase of these pulses. The use of these measurements to simplify the design and optimization of an 80-Gbit/s pulse source, based on this 40-Gbit/s source followed by a nonlinear fiber compressor and multiplexer, is also demonstrated
Epidemics and percolation in small-world networks
We study some simple models of disease transmission on small-world networks,
in which either the probability of infection by a disease or the probability of
its transmission is varied, or both. The resulting models display epidemic
behavior when the infection or transmission probability rises above the
threshold for site or bond percolation on the network, and we give exact
solutions for the position of this threshold in a variety of cases. We confirm
