Electro-deposition of gold nano-structures on gold Quartz Crystal Microbalance (QCM) electrodes for enhanced mercury vapour sensitivity in the presence of interferent gasses

    Get PDF
Gold electrode quartz crystal microbalances (QCMs) were used as transducing platform to detect and sense elemental mercury (Hg) in gas phase. The enhanced sensitivity, resulting form the electro-deposition of gold nano-structures on the surface is shown to increase the response magnitude (RM) of the sensors in the presence of ammonia and humidity interference. The concentration of NH3 and H2O was varied in the range 590 to 1770mg/m3 and 4.2 to 10.4mg/m3, respectively. A constant gas flow of 200sccm, balanced in nitrogen was used as the carrier gas. The RM for Hg was enhanced by creating nanostructures on the sensorpsilas gold electrodes via electro-deposition of gold in a lead acetate electrolyte. The results presented are a critical step in the development of a cheap regenerable and reliable sensor for measuring Hg in the presence of interferents gases commonly found in industrial applications

Mitigation of hazards and risks of emerging pollutants through innovative treatment techniques of post methanated distillery effluent - A review

    Get PDF
Distillery wastewater has high biological and chemical oxygen demand and requires additional treatment before it can be safely discharged into receiving water. It is usually processed through a biomethanation digester and the end product is the post-methanated distillery effluent (PMDE). Research have shown that PMDE released by molasses-based distilleries is a hazardous effluent that can cause harm to the biota and the environment; it contains elevated amount of total dissolved solids (TDS), total suspended solids (TSS) and excess levels of persistent organic compounds (POPs), heavy metals, phenolic compounds, and salts. The practice of wastewater reuse for irrigation in many water scarce countries necessitates the proper treatment of PMDE before it is discharged into receiving water. Convention methods have been in practice for decades, but innovative technologies are needed to enhance the efficiency of PMDE treatment. Advance physical treatment such as membrane separation technology using graphene, ion-exchange and ultrafiltration membranes; chemical treatment such as advanced oxidation methods, electrocoagulation and photocatalytic technologies; biological treatment such as microbial and enzymatic treatment; and hybrid treatment such as microbial-fuel cell (MFC), genetically modified organisms (GMO) and constructed wetland technologies, are promising new methods to improve the quality of PMDE. This review provides insight into current accomplishments evaluates their suitability and discusses future developments in the detoxification of PMDE. The consolidated knowledge will help to develop a better management for the safe disposal and the reuse of PMDE wastewater

Development of nano-structured titanium oxide thin films using a gas carving technique

    Get PDF
A method is developed for producing nano-structured titanium oxide thin films using H2 gas interaction with titanium thin film at a high temperature. These nano-structured thin films have been formed on a quartz crystal substrate. Titanium (Ti) thin films were deposited on the quartz crystal using a RF magnetron sputterer. The samples were placed in the oven at 500-800°C for 5 hours. The gas mixture of 1% H2 in N2 was introduced in the oven. The process of Ti annealing in the presence of H2 carves Ti films into nano-structure shapes. The process is a gas-solid interaction. Thin films were characterised using Scanning Electron Microscopes (SEM) and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) technique. The nano structures formed have dimensions in a range of 25nm - 150nm obtained after gas carving

Electrochemical behaviour and validated determination of the anitcancer drug Tamoxifen

The electrooxidative behaviour of tamoxifen (Tam) and 4-hydroxytamoxifen (TamOH) was investigated by cyclic (CV), differential-pulse adsorptive anodic stripping (DPAdAS) and square-wave adsorptive anodic stripping (SWAdAS) voltammetric techniques. The anodic oxidation peak of Tamoxifen was attributed to the cyclization reaction to form the corresponding phenanthrene derivative and the mechanism of oxidation was postulated on the basis of controlled potential electrolysis and isolation of the oxidative product. Oxidative stripping analysis was successfully applied to the determination of tamoxifen in a bulk pharmaceutical formulation, and sensitivity in human urine and serum was validated. The achieved limits of detection (LOD) of bulk tamoxifen were 1.8 × 10 -6 mol L -1 and 2.4 × 10 -6 mol L -1 for DPAdAS and SWAdAS, respectively. The LOD values for tamoxifen in human urine and serum sample analysis were 4.75 × 10 -7 mol L -1 and 2.63 × 10 -7 mol L -1 and 1.98 × 10 -7 mol L -1 and 3.28 × 10 -7 mol L -1 for DPAdAS and SWAdAS, respectively. 4-hydroxytamoxifen is oxidised at more positive potentials than Tamoxifen, separated from the Tamoxifen stripping peak, and its adsorption to the glassy carbon electrode is less pronounced. This affects the ability to determine this important phase I metabolite in serum and urine sample

Using Synchronization for Prediction of High-Dimensional Chaotic Dynamics

We experimentally observe the nonlinear dynamics of an optoelectronic time-delayed feedback loop designed for chaotic communication using commercial fiber optic links, and we simulate the system using delay differential equations. We show that synchronization of a numerical model to experimental measurements provides a new way to assimilate data and forecast the future of this time-delayed high-dimensional system. For this system, which has a feedback time delay of 22 ns, we show that one can predict the time series for up to several delay periods, when the dynamics is about 15 dimensional.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure

Palladium Nanoparticles Supported by Alumina Nanofibers Synthesized by Electrospinning

    Get PDF
Palladium nanoparticles supported by alumina nanofibers have been successfully synthesized by electrospinning using palladium chloride incorporated into a solution of polyvinyl pyrrolidone and aluminum acetate. Palladium agglomerate sizes and the surface morphology of the electrospun nanofibers were determined by transmission electron microscopy. Palladium nanoparticles appeared to be well dispersed within the electrospun nanofiber structure. X-ray diffraction, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Raman scattering spectroscopy techniques were used to identify the crystalline form and distinguish between oxidized and metallic palladium particles after heating and hydrogenation

The impact of health on professionally active people's incomes in Poland. Microeconometric analysis

    Get PDF
The outcome of the research confirms the occurrence of positive interaction between professionally active people's incomes and the self-assessed state of health. People declaring a bad state of health have incomes by 20% on average lower than people who enjoy good health (assuming that the remaining characteristics of the surveyed person are the same). In case of men, the impact of health state on incomes is slightly greater than in case of women.
