    Prediction of longitudinal shear resistance of composite slabs with profile sheeting to Eurocode 4

    Composite slab incorporate profile sheeting is widely used for multi-storey buildings construction throughout the world. The profile sheeting not only providing the temporarily support to the wet concrete but also formed an integral part of the composite slabs, it provides the resistance to vertical separation and longitudinal slippage between the steel concrete interface. Longitudinal shear resistance of the composite slabs is difficult to predict theoretically and the Eurocode 4 method to predict the longitudinal resistance rely on experimental testing. The most common mode of failure of the composite slab is by longitudinal shear and loss of interlocking at the steel-concrete interface. This paper presents the testing of the composite slabs in accordance to the Eurocode 4

    Twisted Poincar\'e Invariant Quantum Field Theories

    It is by now well known that the Poincar\'e group acts on the Moyal plane with a twisted coproduct. Poincar\'e invariant classical field theories can be formulated for this twisted coproduct. In this paper we systematically study such a twisted Poincar\'e action in quantum theories on the Moyal plane. We develop quantum field theories invariant under the twisted action from the representations of the Poincar\'e group, ensuring also the invariance of the S-matrix under the twisted action of the group .     Write-limited sorts and joins for persistent memory

    To mitigate the impact of the widening gap between the memory needs of CPUs and what standard memory technology can deliver, system architects have introduced a new class of memory technology termed persistent memory. Persistent memory is byteaddressable, but exhibits asymmetric I/O: writes are typically one order of magnitude more expensive than reads. Byte addressability combined with I/O asymmetry render the performance profile of persistent memory unique. Thus, it becomes imperative to find new ways to seamlessly incorporate it into database systems. We do so in the context of query processing. We focus on the fundamental operations of sort and join processing. We introduce the notion of write-limited algorithms that effectively minimize the I/O cost. We give a high-level API that enables the system to dynamically optimize the workflow of the algorithms; or, alternatively, allows the developer to tune the write profile of the algorithms. We present four different techniques to incorporate persistent memory into the database processing stack in light of this API. We have implemented and extensively evaluated all our proposals. Our results show that the algorithms deliver on their promise of I/O-minimality and tunable performance. We showcase the merits and deficiencies of each implementation technique, thus taking a solid first step towards incorporating persistent memory into query processing. 1

    Economic assessment of acquiring water for environmental flows in the Murray Basin

    This article is an economic analysis of reallocating River Murray Basin water from agriculture to the environment with and without the possibility of interregional water trade. Acquiring environmental flows as an equal percentage of water allocations from all irrigation regions in the Basin is estimated to reduce returns to irrigation. When the same volume of water is taken from selected low-value regions only, the net revenue reduction is less. In all scenarios considered, net revenue gains from freeing trade are estimated to outweigh the negative revenue effects of reallocating water for environmental flows. The model accounts for how stochastic weather affects market water demand, supply and requirements for environmental flows. Net irrigation revenue is estimated to be 75millionlessthanthebaselinelevelforascenarioinvolvingreallocatingaconstantvolumeofwaterfortheenvironmentinbothwetanddryyears.Foramorerealisticscenarioinvolvingmorewaterfortheenvironmentinwetandlessindryyears,estimatednetrevenuelossisreducedby48percentto75 million less than the baseline level for a scenario involving reallocating a constant volume of water for the environment in both wet and dry years. For a more realistic scenario involving more water for the environment in wet and less in dry years, estimated net revenue loss is reduced by 48 per cent to 39 million. Finally, the external salinity-related costs of water trading are estimated at around $1 million per annum, a quite modest amount compared to the direct irrigation benefits of trade.Resource /Energy Economics and Policy,

    MODLEACH: A Variant of LEACH for WSNs

    Wireless sensor networks are appearing as an emerging need for mankind. Though, Such networks are still in research phase however, they have high potential to be applied in almost every field of life. Lots of research is done and a lot more is awaiting to be standardized. In this work, cluster based routing in wireless sensor networks is studied precisely. Further, we modify one of the most prominent wireless sensor network's routing protocol "LEACH" as modified LEACH (MODLEACH) by introducing \emph{efficient cluster head replacement scheme} and \emph{dual transmitting power levels}. Our modified LEACH, in comparison with LEACH out performs it using metrics of cluster head formation, through put and network life. Afterwards, hard and soft thresholds are implemented on modified LEACH (MODLEACH) that boast the performance even more.     Comparison of spatial domain optimal trade-off maximum average correlation height (OT-MACH) filter with scale invariant feature transform (SIFT) using images with poor contrast and large illumination gradient

    A spatial domain optimal trade-off Maximum Average Correlation Height (OT-MACH) filter has been previously developed and shown to have advantages over frequency domain implementations in that it can be made locally adaptive to spatial variations in the input image background clutter and normalised for local intensity changes. In this paper we compare the performance of the spatial domain (SPOT-MACH) filter to the widely applied data driven technique known as the Scale Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT). The SPOT-MACH filter is shown to provide more robust recognition performance than the SIFT technique for demanding images such as scenes in which there are large illumination gradients. The SIFT method depends on reliable local edge-based feature detection over large regions of the image plane which is compromised in some of the demanding images we examined for this work. The disadvantage of the SPOTMACH filter is its numerically intensive nature since it is template based and is implemented in the spatial domain. © (2015) COPYRIGHT Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE).
