    Effect of sea surface temperature on monsoon rainfall in a coastal region of India

    The Indian Monsoon, the onset and strength of which decides the fate of millions of people in the Indian sub continent, depends on a number of global parameters and phenomena – most of which are continuous. It is well established that almost all global climatic phenomena are inter-related. Sea Surface Temperature (SST) is one of the key factors influencing the Indian monsoon. Even roughly predicting the Indian Monsoon helps considerably the economies of the countries in the Indian sub continent – most of which are agriculture based. In the present study, an attempt is made to establish a relationship between Sea Surface Temperatures across the globe and monsoon rainfall in coastal region of Orissa State, India. This study aims at evolving and analyzing the correlation contour patterns using GrADS (Grid Analysis and Display System) software for different lead times and then interpret the salient features, to predict monsoon in Orissa based on SST anomaly data. The correlation contours generated in this study will prove quite useful for predicting the rainfall pattern over Coastal Orissa, based on variation in sea surface temperatures across the globe and in marking out the regions of influence

    Wear and Friction properties of H-Al-17Si alloy with dry, lubrication and coated (DLC-Star) conditions under HFRR

    Dry, lubrication (SAE15W40), and coated (DLC-Star) reciprocating tribological tests on rapid solidified AlSi17Cu3.5-4Mg0.6-0.8 alloy was conducted using a high frequency linear reciprocating rig (HFRR) at ambient temperature. The alloy fabricated with the rheo-stir squeeze casting procedure under T-6 condition. However, at different loading (0-30 N) conditions, wear and friction properties of rapid solidified H-Al-17Si alloy are investigated. It is observed that the lower friction coefficient value obtained for DLC-Star coated H-Al-17Si alloy compared to dry and lubrication conditions. Though, for dry and lubricated sliding, the obtained wear coefficient values are 2.9X10-3 mm3/N.m and 4.0X10-4 mm3/N.m. A lower coefficient of wear value of 5.4X10-5 mm3/N.m was recorded with DLC-star coating under dry conditions. The alloy wear coefficient values first increases with applied load (up to 20 N) and then decreases (20 N to 30 N). EDS, AFM surface roughness profilometer, SEM, and advanced metallurgical microscope (AMM) analysis techniques used for the characterization of surface morphologies. The developments in friction and wear coefficients were fundamentally ascribed to the dispersion and size of primary Si elements and the development of tribo-oxide films on the rapid solidified AlSi17 alloy coated (DLC-Star) surfaces

    Probing the highly efficient room temperature ammonia gas sensing properties of a luminescent ZnO nanowire array prepared via an AAO-assisted template route

    Here, we report the facile synthesis of a highly ordered luminescent ZnO nanowire array using a low temperature anodic aluminium oxide (AAO) template route which can be economically produced in large scale quantity. The as-synthesized nanowires have diameters ranging from 60 to 70 nm and length similar to 11 mu m. The photoluminescence spectrum reveals that the AAO/ZnO assembly has a strong green emission peak at 490 nm upon excitation at a wavelength of 406 nm. Furthermore, the ZnO nanowire array-based gas sensor has been fabricated by a simple micromechanical technique and its NH3 gas sensing properties have been explored thoroughly. The fabricated gas sensor exhibits excellent sensitivity and fast response to NH3 gas at room temperature. Moreover, for 50 ppm NH3 concentration, the observed value of sensitivity is around 68%, while the response and recovery times are 28 and 29 seconds, respectively. The present synthesis technique to produce a highly ordered ZnO nanowire array and a fabricated gas sensor has great potential to push the low cost gas sensing nanotechnology

    Analgesic activity of Cissus quadrangularis linn with Zingiber officinale rosc in male wistar rats

    Background: The global scenario, human beings are using various forms of treatment for relief of pain; among them, medicinal plant products have gained popularity because of its wide range of use and less side effects.Methods: Adult Albino rats of either sex were selected and divided into 5 groups. The Eddy’s hot plate was used and maintained temperature (55±0.5ºC), the animals were placed on the hot plate and the time taken for paw licking or jumping was recorded and considered as nociceptive response. The reaction time was observed on 0, 30, 60, and 90 minute.Results: The hot plate reaction time in sec was collected in the intervals of 0, 30, 60 and 90 minutes in all groups. Reaction times as follows: group III (Cissus quadrangularis Linn.) were 2.18±0.04, 3.13±0.05**, 5.83±0.05**, 5.39±0.04**;  Group IV (Zingiber officinale Rosc.) were 2.12±0.03, 4.13±0.04**, 7.43±0.07**, 7.16±0.06**; Group V Cissus quadrangularis Linn+ Zingiber officinale Rosc.) were 2.21±0.75, 4.67±0.98**, 8.15±0.89**, 9.02±0.75**; Group II (Dexamethasone) were 2.14±0.05, 5.53±0.05**, 8.14±0.06**, 10.08±0.10** respectively, Results are presented as mean±SEM, (n=6), *p<0.01, **p<0.05 dunnet test used as compared to control.Conclusions: Present study reveals that, the combination treatment of Zingiber officinale Rosc. + Cissus quadrangularis Linn. has been shown significant analgesic effect. High analgesic effect was observed with combination therapy; the effect was shown same as standard drug dexamethasone

    Enhancement of pigeonpea productivity through adoption of drought mitigating strategies

    Pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan (L.) Millspaugh) is an important drought tolerant legume crop in Indian rainfed agriculture. Though India accounts for nearly 90% of the world’s pigeonpea acreage (3.73 million ha) and production (3.07 million t), the productivity is lower at 707 kg/ha than the world average. The Morocco India Food Legumes Initiative in collaboration with the ICRISAT is aimed at improving the livelihood of small farmers to strengthen food and nutritional security through adoption of improved technologies. This paper is focused on developing and disseminating strategies to improve pigeonpea productivity in dryland regions which are characterized by erratic rainfall, frequent and prolonged dry spells and soil nutrient depletion. During 2013-16, demonstrations were conducted in 1200 farmers’ fields in Mahabubnagar district, Telangana, India, with an objective of enhancing the productivity of pigeonpea using three drought mitigating strategies: (i) adoption of short-duration cultivar PRG 176, a high-yielding and early-maturing pedigree selection of ICPL 88034 x ICPL 88039 with a duration of 130-135 days; (ii) foliar application of soluble fertilizer to maintain vegetative growth and ultimately improve pod filling; (iii) life saving irrigation at the rate of 20 mm with water harvested from farm ponds during mid season drought and prolonged dry spells. Adoption of PRG 176 resulted in an average yield of 1400 kg/ha compared to LRG 41 (1120 kg/ha). The yield improvement of 25% can largely be attributed to the good branching habit (8- 13 primary branches) and high flower to pod conversion ratio of PRG 176 under dryland conditions. Foliar application of multi-K during flowering and pod formation stages enhanced the yield to 1360 kg/ha compared to the yield of 1100 kg/ha obtained in fields without foliar spray. Life saving irrigation in PRG 176 during mid season dry spell which persisted for 17-21 days improved the yields by 20 % compared to the yield of 1200 kg/ha obtained in rainfed crop. In conclusion, the study demonstrated that the productivity of pigeonpea in dryland regions can be enhanced to an average 1560 kg/ha through an integrated drought mitigating approach by exploiting the short-duration and high-yielding potential of PRG 176, providing life saving irrigation during critical growth stages and foliar application of nutrients at flowering and pod formation stages

    VERU-111 suppresses tumor growth and metastatic phenotypes of cervical cancer cells through the activation of p53 signaling pathway

    In this study, we investigated the therapeutic efficacy of VERU-111 in vitro and in vivo model systems of cervical cancer. VERU-111 treatment inhibited cell proliferation and, clonogenic potential, induce accumulation of p53 and down regulated the expression of HPV E6/E7 expression in cervical cancer cells. In addition, VERU-111 treatment also decreased the expression of phosphorylation of Jak2 (TyR1007/1008) and STAT3 at Tyr705 and Ser727. VERU-111 treatment arrested cell cycle in the G2/M phase and modulated cell cycle regulatory proteins (cyclin B1, p21 p34cdc2 and pcdk1). Moreover, VERU-111 treatment induced apoptosis and modulated the expression of Bid, Bcl-xl, Survivin, Bax, Bcl2 and cleavage in PARP. In functional assays, VERU-111 markedly reduced the tumorigenic, migratory, and invasive potential of cervical cancer cells via modulations of MMPs. VERU-111 treatment also showed significant (P\u3c0.05) inhibition of orthotopic xenograft tumor growth in athymic nude mice. Taken together, our results demonstrate the potential anti-cancer efficacy of VERU-111 in in vitro and in vivo. VERU-111 can be explored as a potent therapeutic agent for the treatment of cervical cancer

    A green bio-organic catalyst (taurine) promoted one-pot synthesis of (R/S)-2-thioxo-3,4-dihydropyrimidine(TDHPM)-5-carboxanilides: chiral investigations using circular dichroism and validation by computational approaches

    Owing to the massive importance of dihydropyrimidine (DHPMs) scaffolds in the pharmaceutical industry and other areas, we developed an effective and sustainable one-pot reaction protocol for the synthesis of (R/S)-2-thioxo-DHPM-5-carboxanilides via the Biginelli-type cyclo-condensation reaction of aryl aldehydes, thiourea and various acetoacetanilide derivatives in ethanol at 100 °C. In this protocol, taurine was used as a green and reusable bio-organic catalyst. Twenty-three novel derivatives of (R/S)-TDHPM-5-carboxanilides and their structures were confirmed by various spectroscopy techniques. The aforementioned compounds were synthesized via the formation of one asymmetric centre, one new C–C bond, and two new C–N bonds in the final product. All the newly synthesized compounds were obtained in their racemic form with up to 99% yield. In addition, the separation of the racemic mixture of all the newly synthesized compounds was carried out by chiral HPLC (Prep LC), which provided up to 99.99% purity. The absolute configuration of all the enantiomerically pure isomers was determined using a circular dichroism study and validated by a computational approach. With up to 99% yield of 4d, this one-pot synthetic approach can also be useful for large-scale industrial production.
