    Batch Adsorption of Cr(VI) Ions on Zeolite and Agroindustrial Waste

    Several adsorbents, such as natural zeolite clinoptilolite, modified zeolite, grape and olive wastes have been investigated for removal of chromium (VI) ions from aqueous solutions by performing batch kinetic sorption experiments. Natural zeolite, modified zeolite, grape and olive wastes have removed 5 %, 13 %, 73 % and 62 %, respectively, of Cr(VI) ions from aqueous solution. Equilibrium experimental results were fitted to Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms to obtain the characteristic parameters of each model. According to an evaluation using Langmuir equation, the maximum Cr(VI) adsorption capacity of grape waste was 108.12 mg g–1 and of olive waste 100.47 mg g–1 at pH 2. The equilibrium kinetic data were analyzed using pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order models, and parameters were estimated by using non-linear regression analysis. Langmuir model and pseudo-second-order model describes better the obtained results than Freundlich model and the pseudo first-order model. The adsorption of Cr(VI) ions increased with temperature and the negative values of ΔG° for investigated adsorbents confirmed the feasibility and spontaneous nature of the adsorption process.     Missing not at random in end of life care studies: multiple imputation and sensitivity analysis on data from the ACTION study

    Background: Missing data are common in end-of-life care studies, but there is still relatively little exploration of which is the best method to deal with them, and, in particular, if the missing at random (MAR) assumption is valid or missing not at random (MNAR) mechanisms should be assumed. In this paper we investigated this issue through a sensitivity analysis within the ACTION study, a multicenter cluster randomized controlled trial testing advance care planning in patients with advanced lung or colorectal cancer. Methods: Multiple imputation procedures under MAR and MNAR assumptions were implemented. Possible violation of the MAR assumption was addressed with reference to variables measuring quality of life and symptoms. The MNAR model assumed that patients with worse health were more likely to have missing questionnaires, making a distinction between single missing items, which were assumed to satisfy the MAR assumption, and missing values due to completely missing questionnaire for which a MNAR mechanism was hypothesized.     Large volumes of sludge are produced from onsite sanitation systems in densely populated areas (e.g. slums and emergency settlements) and wastewater treatment facilities that contain high amounts of pathogens. There is a need for technological options which can effectively treat the rapidly accumulating sludge under these conditions. This study explored a pilot-scale microwave (MW) based reactor as a possible alternative for rapid sludge treatment. The reactor performance was examined by conducting a series of batch tests using centrifuged waste activated sludge (C-WAS), non-centrifuged waste activated sludge (WAS), faecal sludge (FS), and septic tank sludge (SS). Four kilograms of each sludge type were subjected to MW treatment at a power of 3.4 kW for various time durations ranging from 30 to 240 min. During the treatment the temperature change, bacteria inactivation (E. coli, coliforms, Staphylococcus aureus, and enterococcus faecalis) and sludge weight/volume reduction were measured. Calorific values (CV) of the dried sludge and the nutrient content (total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP)) in both the dried sludge and the condensate were also determined. It was found that MW treatment was successful to achieve a complete bacterial inactivation and a sludge weight/volume reduction above 60%. Besides, the dried sludge and condensate had high energy (≥ 16 MJ/kg) and nutrient contents (solids; TN ≥ 28 mg/g TS and TP ≥ 15 mg/g TS; condensate TN ≥ 49 mg/L TS and TP ≥ 0.2 mg/L), having the potential to be used as biofuel, soil conditioner, fertilizer, etc. The MW reactor can be applied for the rapid treatment of sludge in areas such as slums and emergency settlements

    The pathogenicity of antibodies against β2-glycoprotein I (anti-β2GPI) depends on multiple factors such as subclass type, epitope binding and avidity. Due to their large heterogeneity, their impact on antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) onset is still not fully clarified. We studied the binding characteristics of IgG anti-β2GPI with known avidity from sera of 201 autoimmune patients (87 with APS, 67 with APS associated with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), 47 with only SLE) to six β2GPI peptides corresponding to amino acid clusters on domains I-II, II, III and III-IV by indirect ELISA and evaluated their association with clinical features of APS. Peptides A (LKTPRV; domain I-II), B (KDKATF; domain IV) and C (TLRVYK; domain III) were derived from a hexapeptide phage display library previously shown to react with pathogenic monoclonal anti-β2GPI. Peptides D (NGPANSK; domain III), E (YNPLWFV; domain II) and F (KMDGNHP; domain III-IV) represent surface amino acid clusters on β2GPI. The percentage of patients positive for peptides were observed as follows: 30.3 % for peptide D, 28.90 % for B, 25.9 % for C, 24.9 % for E, 24.4 % for F and 10.0 % for A. The anti-peptide antibodies in studied serum samples were predominantly of heterogeneous avidity, followed by law avidity anti-peptide antibodies, whereas only a few were of high avidity. Positive and negative correlations were found between several anti-peptide antibodies and the rate of thrombosis. Our results indicated diverse reactivity of IgG anti-β2GPI to different epitopes on β2GPI. Classification of IgG anti-β2GPI into subgroups regarding epitope specificity and avidity could represent an additional tool in understanding their pathogenicity in APS
