Timing the Nearby Isolated Neutron Star RX J1856.5-3754
RX J1856.5-3754 is the X-ray brightest among the nearby isolated neutron
stars. Its X-ray spectrum is thermal, and is reproduced remarkably well by a
black-body, but its interpretation has remained puzzling. One reason is that
the source did not exhibit pulsations, and hence a magnetic field
strength--vital input to atmosphere models--could not be estimated. Recently,
however, very weak pulsations were discovered. Here, we analyze these in
detail, using all available data from the XMM-Newton and Chandra X-ray
observatories. From frequency measurements, we set a 2-sigma upper limit to the
frequency derivative of \dot\nu<1.3e-14 Hz/s. Trying possible phase-connected
timing solutions, we find that one solution is far more likely than the others,
and we infer a most probable value of \dot\nu=(-5.98+/-0.14)e-16 Hz/s. The
inferred magnetic field strength is 1.5e13 G, comparable to what was found for
similar neutron stars. From models, the field seems too strong to be consistent
with the absence of spectral features for non-condensed atmospheres. It is
sufficiently strong, however, that the surface could be condensed, but only if
it is consists of heavy elements like iron. Our measurements imply a
characteristic age of about 4 Myr. This is longer than the cooling and
kinematic ages, as was found for similar objects, but at almost a factor ten,
the discrepancy is more extreme. A puzzle raised by our measurement is that the
implied rotational energy loss rate of about 3e30 erg/s is orders of magnitude
smaller than what was inferred from the H-alpha nebula surrounding the source.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, 2 tables; accepted for publication in

Radiation Hardness of Thin Low Gain Avalanche Detectors
Low Gain Avalanche Detectors (LGAD) are based on a n++-p+-p-p++ structure
where an appropriate doping of the multiplication layer (p+) leads to high
enough electric fields for impact ionization. Gain factors of few tens in
charge significantly improve the resolution of timing measurements,
particularly for thin detectors, where the timing performance was shown to be
limited by Landau fluctuations. The main obstacle for their operation is the
decrease of gain with irradiation, attributed to effective acceptor removal in
the gain layer. Sets of thin sensors were produced by two different producers
on different substrates, with different gain layer doping profiles and
thicknesses (45, 50 and 80 um). Their performance in terms of gain/collected
charge and leakage current was compared before and after irradiation with
neutrons and pions up to the equivalent fluences of 5e15 cm-2. Transient
Current Technique and charge collection measurements with LHC speed electronics
were employed to characterize the detectors. The thin LGAD sensors were shown
to perform much better than sensors of standard thickness (~300 um) and offer
larger charge collection with respect to detectors without gain layer for
fluences <2e15 cm-2. Larger initial gain prolongs the beneficial performance of
LGADs. Pions were found to be more damaging than neutrons at the same
equivalent fluence, while no significant difference was found between different
producers. At very high fluences and bias voltages the gain appears due to deep
acceptors in the bulk, hence also in thin standard detectors
Mutational analysis of active site residues of human adenosine deaminase
Adenosine deaminase was overexpressed in a baculovirus system. The pure recombinant and native enzymes were identical in size, Zn2+ content, and activity. Five amino acids, in proximity to the active site, were replaced by mutagenesis. The altered enzymes were purified to homogeneity and compared to wild-type adenosine deaminase with respect to zinc content, enzymatic activity, and kinetic parameters. All but one of the alterations produced significant activity perturbations. Replacement of Cys262 produced a protein that retained at least 30-40% of wild-type activity. In contrast, replacements of His17, His214, His238, and Glu217 resulted in dramatic losses of enzyme activity. None of these mutants exhibited large variations in Km. The proteins produced from alterations of amino acids implicated in metal coordination were slightly activated by inclusion of Zn2+ throughout purification. These experiments confirm that in the active enzyme Zn2+ plays a critical role in catalysis, that a histidine or glutamate residue plays a mechanistic role in the hydrolytic deamination step, and that cysteine is not involved in the catalytic mechanism of adenosine deaminase. These data support the roles for these amino acid residues suggested from the x-ray structure of murine adenosine deaminase (Wilson, D. K., Rudolf, F. B., and Quicho, F. A. (1991) Science 252, 1278-1284)
Feature integration in natural language concepts
Two experiments measured the joint influence of three key sets of semantic features on the frequency with which artifacts (Experiment 1) or plants and creatures (Experiment 2) were categorized in familiar categories. For artifacts, current function outweighed both originally intended function and current appearance. For biological kinds, appearance and behavior, an inner biological function, and appearance and behavior of offspring all had similarly strong effects on categorization. The data were analyzed to determine whether an independent cue model or an interactive model best accounted for how the effects of the three feature sets combined. Feature integration was found to be additive for artifacts but interactive for biological kinds. In keeping with this, membership in contrasting artifact categories tended to be superadditive, indicating overlapping categories, whereas for biological kinds, it was subadditive, indicating conceptual gaps between categories. It is argued that the results underline a key domain difference between artifact and biological concepts
Using Schema Training to Facilitate Students\u27 Understanding of Challenging Engineering Concepts in Heat Transfer and Thermodynamics
Background: Chi and colleagues have argued that some of the most challenging engineering concepts exhibit properties of emergent systems. However, students often lack a mental framework, or schema, for understanding emergence. Slotta and Chi posited that helping students develop a schema for emergent systems, referred to as schema training, would increase the understanding of challenging concepts exhibiting emergent properties.
Purpose: We tested the effectiveness of schema training and explored the nature of challenging concepts from thermodynamics and heat transfer. We investigated if schema training could (a) repair misconceptions in advanced engineering students and (b) prevent them in beginning engineering students.
Method: We adapted Slotta and Chi\u27s schema training modules and tested their impact in two studies that employed an experimental design. Items from the Thermal and Transport Concept Inventory and expert-developed multiple-choice questions were used to evaluate conceptual understanding of the participants. The language used by students in their open-ended explanations of multiple-choice questions was also coded.
Results: In both studies, students in the experimental groups showed larger gains in their understanding of some concepts—specifically in dye diffusion and microfluidics in Study One, and in the final test for thermodynamics in Study Two. But in neither study did students exhibit any gain in conceptual questions about heat transfer.
Conclusion: Our studies suggest the importance of examining the nature of the phenomena underlying the concepts being taught because the language used in instruction has implications for how students understand them. Therefore, we suggest that instructors reflect on their own understanding of the concepts

Effects of classification context on categorization in natural categories
The patterns of classification of borderline instances of eight common taxonomic categories were examined under three different instructional conditions to test two predictions: first, that lack of a specified context contributes to vagueness in categorization, and second, that altering the purpose of classification can lead to greater or lesser dependence on similarity in classification. The instructional conditions contrasted purely pragmatic with more technical/quasi-legal contexts as purposes for classification, and these were compared with a no-context control. The measures of category vagueness were between-subjects disagreement and within-subjects consistency, and the measures of similarity based categorization were category breadth and the correlation of instance categorization probability with mean rated typicality, independently measured in a neutral context. Contrary to predictions, none of the measures of vagueness, reliability, category breadth, or correlation with typicality were generally affected by the instructional setting as a function of pragmatic versus technical purposes. Only one subcondition, in which a situational context was implied in addition to a purposive context, produced a significant change in categorization. Further experiments demonstrated that the effect of context was not increased when participants talked their way through the task, and that a technical context did not elicit more all-or-none categorization than did a pragmatic context. These findings place an important boundary condition on the effects of instructional context on conceptual categorization
What determines auditory similarity? The effect of stimulus group and methodology.
Two experiments on the internal representation of auditory stimuli compared the pairwise and grouping methodologies as means of deriving similarity judgements. A total of 45 undergraduate students participated in each experiment, judging the similarity of short auditory stimuli, using one of the methodologies. The experiments support and extend Bonebright's (1996) findings, using a further 60 stimuli. Results from both methodologies highlight the importance of category information and acoustic features, such as root mean square (RMS) power and pitch, in similarity judgements. Results showed that the grouping task is a viable alternative to the pairwise task with N > 20 sounds whilst highlighting subtle differences, such as cluster tightness, between the different task results. The grouping task is more likely to yield category information as underlying similarity judgements

Supervised versus unsupervised categorization: Two sides of the same coin?
Supervised and unsupervised categorization have been studied in separate research traditions. A handful of studies have attempted to explore a possible convergence between the two. The present research builds on these studies, by comparing the unsupervised categorization results of Pothos et al. (submitted; 2008) with the results from two procedures of supervised categorization. In two experiments, we tested 375 participants with nine different stimulus sets, and examined the relation between ease of learning of a classification, memory for a classification, and spontaneous preference for a classification. After taking into account the role of the number of category labels (clusters) in supervised learning, we found the three variables to be closely associated with each other. Our results provide encouragement for researchers seeking unified theoretical explanations for supervised and unsupervised categorization, but raise a range of challenging theoretical questions
