    We shortly review point-form quantum field theory, i.e. the canonical quantization of a relativistic field theory on a Lorentz-invariant surface of the form xμxμ=τ2x_\mu x^\mu = \tau^2.     Characterization of secondary ignition sources in unattended compartments and full-scale baseline test

    The characteristics of five fuel loads burned within a metal lavatory were identified. In 15 of the tests the lavatory door remained closed for the 30-minute test period while in 15 additional tests the door was opened after the fire had developed. Upon completion of these tests the most severe source was selected for use in the baseline test. In the baseline test, the lavatory and adjacent panels, all of which were constructed of contemporary materials, were tested for a period of 1 hour. Thermal, environmental, and biological data were obtained for all fuel loads, door conditions, and the baseline test. All tests were conducted in a cabin fire simulator with separate ventilation of the cabin and lavatory representative of an inflight condition. The baseline test established that by using the most severe fuel source: (1) the exposed animal subject survived without complications; (2) no toxic levels of gas within the cabin were detected; (3) a propagating fire did not develop in adjacent structures; (4) the lavatory containing the fire remained structurally intact; (5) decomposition of portions of the lavatory did occur; and (6) cabin visibility would have presented a problem after 5 minutes

    Vector mesons in a relativistic point-form approach

    We apply the point form of relativistic quantum mechanics to develop a Poincare invariant coupled-channel formalism for two-particle systems interacting via one-particle exchange. This approach takes the exchange particle explicitly into account and leads to a generalized eigenvalue equation for the Bakamjian-Thomas type mass operator of the system. The coupling of the exchange particle is derived from quantum field theory. As an illustrative example we consider vector mesons within the chiral constituent quark model in which the hyperfine interaction between the confined quark-antiquark pair is generated by Goldstone-boson exchange. We study the effect of retardation in the Goldstone-boson exchange by comparing with the commonly used instantaneous approximation. As a nice physical feature we find that the problem of a too large ρ\rho-ω\omega splitting can nearly be avoided by taking the dynamics of the exchange meson explicitly into account.Comment: 14 pages, 1 figur

    Electromagnetic meson form factor from a relativistic coupled-channel approach

    Point-form relativistic quantum mechanics is used to derive an expression for the electromagnetic form factor of a pseudoscalar meson for space-like momentum transfers. The elastic scattering of an electron by a confined quark-antiquark pair is treated as a relativistic two-channel problem for the qqˉeq\bar{q}e and qqˉeγq\bar{q}e\gamma states. With the approximation that the total velocity of the qqˉeq\bar{q}e system is conserved at (electromagnetic) interaction vertices this simplifies to an eigenvalue problem for a Bakamjian-Thomas type mass operator. After elimination of the qqˉeγq\bar{q}e\gamma channel the electromagnetic meson current and form factor can be directly read off from the one-photon-exchange optical potential. By choosing the invariant mass of the electron-meson system large enough, cluster separability violations become negligible. An equivalence with the usual front-form expression, resulting from a spectator current in the q+=0q^+=0 reference frame, is established. The generalization of this multichannel approach to electroweak form factors for an arbitrary bound few-body system is quite obvious. By an appropriate extension of the Hilbert space this approach is also able to accommodate exchange-current effects.Comment: 30 pages, 5 figure

    Graves\u27 Disease Following the Occurrence of Hypothyroidism

    Three patients with hypothyroidism of 15-48 months\u27 duration developed Graves\u27 disease while on thyroid hormone replacement therapy. In one patient, the hyperthyrold phase was preceded by ophthalmopathy and nonsuppresslble 24-hour radioactive iodine uptake (RAIU). Eventually, all had hyperthyrold findings with elevated thyroid hormone levels, high 24-hour RAIU, and a diffuse uniform uptake of RAI by the enlarged thyroid. All subjects had negative antithyroglobulin and antimicrosomal antibody titers. Two had demonstrable long-acting thyroid stimulator (LATS) in their sera. All three were followed for 5-36 months while on propylthiouracil therapy prior to surgery or RAI administration. Both LATS-positive patients underwent bilateral subtotal thyroidectomy. Classical changes of Graves\u27 disease were found on histopathological examination of resected tissues
