Crystal field states of Kondo lattice heavy fermions CeRuSn3 and CeRhSn3
Inelastic neutron scattering experiments have been carried out to determine
the crystal field states of the Kondo lattice heavy fermions CeRuSn3 and
CeRhSn3. Both the compounds crystallize in LaRuSn3-type cubic structure (space
group Pm-3n) in which the Ce atoms occupy two distinct crystallographic sites
with cubic (m-3) and tetragonal (-4m.2) point symmetries. The INS data of
CeRuSn3 reveal the presence of a broad excitation centered around 6-8 meV which
is accounted by a model based on crystal electric field (CEF) excitations. On
the other hand, the INS data of isostructural CeRhSn3 reveal three CEF
excitations around 7.0, 12.2 and 37.2 meV. The neutron intensity sum rule
indicates that the Ce ions at both cubic and tetragonal Ce sites are in Ce3+
state in both CeRuSn3 and CeRhSn3. The CEF level schemes for both the compounds
are deduced. We estimate the Kondo temperature T_K = 3.1(2) K for CeRuSn3 from
neutron quasielastic linewidth in excellent agreement with that determined from
the scaling of magnetoresistance which gives T_K = 3.2(1) K. For CeRhSn3 the
neutron quasielastic linewidth gives T_K = 4.6 K. For both CeRuSn3 and CeRhSn3,
the ground state of Ce3+ turns out to be a quartet for the cubic site and a

Physical properties of noncentrosymmetric superconductor LaIrSi3: A {\mu}SR study
The results of heat capacity C_p(T, H) and electrical resistivity \rho(T,H)
measurements down to 0.35 K as well as muon spin relaxation and rotation
(\muSR) measurements on a noncentrosymmetric superconductor LaIrSi3 are
presented. Powder neutron diffraction confirmed the reported noncentrosymmetric
body-centered tetragonal BaNiSn3-type structure (space group I4\,mm) of
LaIrSi3. The bulk superconductivity is observed below T_c = 0.72(1) K. The
intrinsic \Delta C_e/\gamma_n T_c = 1.09(3) is significantly smaller than the
BCS value of 1.43, and this reduction is accounted by the \alpha-model of BCS
superconductivity. The analysis of the superconducting state C_e(T) data by the
single-band \alpha-model indicates a moderately anisotropic order parameter
with the s-wave gap \Delta(0)/k_B T_c = 1.54(2) which is lower than the BCS
value of 1.764. Our estimates of various normal and superconducting state
parameters indicate a weakly coupled electron-phonon driven type-I s-wave
superconductivity in LaIrSi3. The \muSR results also confirm the conventional
type-I superconductivity in LaIrSi3 with a preserved time reversal symmetry and
hence a singlet pairing superconducting ground state.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, 2 table
Contiguous 3d and 4f magnetism: towards strongly correlated 3d electrons in YbFe2Al10
We present magnetization, specific heat, and 27Al NMR investigations on
YbFe2Al10 over a wide range in temperature and magnetic field. The magnetic
susceptibility at low temperatures is strongly enhanced at weak magnetic
fields, accompanied by a ln(T0/T) divergence of the low-T specific heat
coefficient in zero field, which indicates a ground state of correlated
electrons. From our hard X-ray photo emission spectroscopy (HAXPES) study, the
Yb valence at 50 K is evaluated to be 2.38. The system displays valence
fluctuating behavior in the low to intermediate temperature range, whereas
above 400 K, Yb3+ carries a full and stable moment, and Fe carries a moment of
about 3.1 mB. The enhanced value of the Sommerfeld Wilson ratio and the dynamic
scaling of spin-lattice relaxation rate divided by T [27(1/T1T)] with static
susceptibility suggests admixed ferromagnetic correlations. 27(1/T1T)
simultaneously tracks the valence fluctuations from the 4f -Yb ions in the high
temperature range and field dependent antiferromagnetic correlations among
partially Kondo screened Fe 3d moments at low temperature, the latter evolve
out of an Yb 4f admixed conduction band.Comment: To appear in Phys. Rev. Let
Mental illness, challenging behaviour, and psychotropic drug prescribing in people with intellectual disability: UK population based cohort study
To describe the incidence of recorded mental illness and challenging behaviour in people with intellectual disability in UK primary care and to explore the prescription of psychotropic drugs in this group
Movement side effects of antipsychotic drugs in adults with and without intellectual disability: UK population-based cohort study
OBJECTIVES: To measure the incidence of movement side effects of antipsychotic drugs in adults with intellectual disability and compare rates with adults without intellectual disability. DESIGN: Cohort study using data from The Health Improvement Network. SETTING: UK primary care. PARTICIPANTS: Adults with intellectual disability prescribed antipsychotic drugs matched to a control group of adults without intellectual disability prescribed antipsychotic drugs. OUTCOME MEASURES: New records of movement side effect including acute dystonias, akathisia, parkinsonism, tardive dyskinaesia and neuroleptic malignant syndrome. RESULTS: 9013 adults with intellectual disability and a control cohort of 34 242 adults without intellectual disability together contributed 148 709 person-years data. The overall incidence of recorded movement side effects was 275 per 10 000 person-years (95% CI 256 to 296) in the intellectual disability group and 248 per 10 000 person-years (95% CI 237 to 260) in the control group. The incidence of any recorded movement side effect was significantly greater in people with intellectual disability compared with those without (incidence rate ratio 1.30, 95% CI 1.18 to 1.42, p<0.001, after adjustment for potential confounders), with parkinsonism and akathisia showing the greatest difference between the groups. Neuroleptic malignant syndrome, although occurring infrequently, was three times more common in people with intellectual disability-prescribed antipsychotic drugs (incidence rate ratio 3.03, 95% CI 1.26 to 7.30, p=0.013). Differences in rates of movement side effects between the groups were not due to differences in the proportions prescribed first and second-generation antipsychotic drugs. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides evidence to substantiate the long-held assumption that people with intellectual disability are more susceptible to movement side effects of antipsychotic drugs. Assessment for movement side effects should be integral to antipsychotic drug monitoring in people with intellectual disability. Regular medication review is essential to ensure optimal prescribing in this group
Nodal superconducting gap structure in the quasi-one-dimensional CsCrAs investigated using SR measurements
The superconducting ground state of the newly discovered superconductor
CsCrAs with a quasi-one-dimensional crystal structure ( 2.1(1) K) has been investigated using magnetization and muon-spin
relaxation or rotation (SR), both zero-field (ZF) and transverse-field
(TF), measurements. Our ZF SR measurements reveal the presence of spin
fluctuations below 4 K and the ZF relaxation rate () shows enhancement
below 2.1 K, which might indicate that the superconducting
state is unconventional. This observation suggests that the electrons are
paired via unconventional channels such as spin fluctuations, as proposed on
the basis of theoretical models. Our analysis of the TF SR results shows
that the temperature dependence of the superfluid density is fitted better with
a nodal gap structure than an isotropic s-wave model for the superconducting
gap. The observation of a nodal gap in CsCrAs is consistent with
that observed in the isostructural KCrAs compound through TF
SR measurements. Furthermore, from our TF SR study we have estimated
the magnetic penetration depth = 954 nm,
superconducting carrier density m, and

Biological responses to a resumption in river flow in a freshwater-deprived, permanently open Southern African estuary
The Kariega Estuary is a freshwater-deprived system due to numerous impoundments in the catchment. This system has had little or no horizontal salinity gradient over the last 15 years, with hypersaline conditions sometimes predominating in the upper reaches. Following high rainfall events in the catchment during the spring of 2006, including a flood event (approximate 1:10 year) in August 2006, a series of riverine pulses entered the estuary and a horizontal salinity gradient was established. This study examined the influence of this freshwater pulse on four components of the biota within the estuary, namely the zooplankton, and larval, littoral and demersal fishes. The study demonstrated that in three of these components elevated densities were recorded following the riverine input, with only the littoral fishes retaining an almost constant density. In addition, changes in the relative contributions of the estuarine utilisation classes for all three fish groups examined indicated that freshwater input into these systems positively influences the abundances. This has significant implications for water managers as it demonstrates the importance of an Ecological Reserve (defined as ‘the water required to protect the aquatic ecosystems of the water resource’) for this system
