General Relativistic Mean Field Theory for Rotating Nuclei
We formulate a general relativistic mean field theory for rotating nuclei
starting from the special relativistic model Lagrangian. The

Predictive Models of Large Neutrino Mixing Angles
Several experimental results could be interpreted as evidence that certain
neutrino mixing angles are large, of order unity. However, in the context of
grand unified models the neutrino angles come out characteristically to be
small, like the KM angles. It is shown how to construct simple grand-unified
models in which neutrino angles are not only large but completely predicted

Neutrino Oscillations and Moments of Electron Spectra
We show that the effects of neutrino oscillations on 8B solar neutrinos are
described well by the first two moments (the average and the variance) of the
energy distribution of scattered or recoil electrons. For the SuperKamiokande
and the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory experiments, the differences between the
moments calculated with oscillations and the standard, no-oscillation moments
are greater than 3 standard deviations for a significant fraction of the

Neutrino Interactions In Oscillation Experiments
We calculate neutrino induced cross-sections relevant for oscillation
experiments, including the -lepton threshold for quasi-elastic, resonance
and deep inelastic scattering. In addition to threshold effects, we include
nuclear corrections for heavy targets which are moderate for quasi-elastic and
large for single pion production. Nuclear effects for deep inelastic reactions
are small. We present cross sections together with their nuclear corrections
for various channels which are useful for interpreting the experimental results
and for determining parameters of the neutrino sector..Comment: 24 pages, 18 figure
Comparing the hierarchy of keywords in on-line news portals
The tagging of on-line content with informative keywords is a widespread
phenomenon from scientific article repositories through blogs to on-line news
portals. In most of the cases, the tags on a given item are free words chosen
by the authors independently. Therefore, relations among keywords in a
collection of news items is unknown. However, in most cases the topics and
concepts described by these keywords are forming a latent hierarchy, with the
more general topics and categories at the top, and more specialised ones at the
bottom. Here we apply a recent, cooccurrence-based tag hierarchy extraction
method to sets of keywords obtained from four different on-line news portals.
The resulting hierarchies show substantial differences not just in the topics
rendered as important (being at the top of the hierarchy) or of less interest
(categorised low in the hierarchy), but also in the underlying network
structure. This reveals discrepancies between the plausible keyword association
frameworks in the studied news portals
Splice Isoforms of the Polyglutamine Disease Protein Ataxin-3 Exhibit Similar Enzymatic yet Different Aggregation Properties
Protein context clearly influences neurotoxicity in polyglutamine diseases, but the contribution of alternative splicing to this phenomenon has rarely been investigated. Ataxin-3, a deubiquitinating enzyme and the disease protein in SCA3, is alternatively spliced to encode either a C-terminal hydrophobic stretch or a third ubiquitin interacting motif (termed 2UIM and 3UIM isoforms, respectively). In light of emerging insights into ataxin-3 function, we examined the significance of this splice variation. We confirmed neural expression of several minor 5β² variants and both of the known 3β² ataxin-3 splice variants. Regardless of polyglutamine expansion, 3UIM ataxin-3 is the predominant isoform in brain. Although 2UIM and 3UIM ataxin-3 display similar in vitro deubiquitinating activity, 2UIM ataxin-3 is more prone to aggregate and more rapidly degraded by the proteasome. Our data demonstrate how alternative splicing of sequences distinct from the trinucleotide repeat can alter properties of the encoded polyglutamine disease protein and thereby perhaps contribute to selective neurotoxicity
Mining the LIPG Allelic Spectrum Reveals the Contribution of Rare and Common Regulatory Variants to HDL Cholesterol
Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have successfully identified loci associated with quantitative traits, such as blood lipids. Deep resequencing studies are being utilized to catalogue the allelic spectrum at GWAS loci. The goal of these studies is to identify causative variants and missing heritability, including heritability due to low frequency and rare alleles with large phenotypic impact. Whereas rare variant efforts have primarily focused on nonsynonymous coding variants, we hypothesized that noncoding variants in these loci are also functionally important. Using the HDL-C gene LIPG as an example, we explored the effect of regulatory variants identified through resequencing of subjects at HDL-C extremes on gene expression, protein levels, and phenotype. Resequencing a portion of the LIPG promoter and 5β² UTR in human subjects with extreme HDL-C, we identified several rare variants in individuals from both extremes. Luciferase reporter assays were used to measure the effect of these rare variants on LIPG expression. Variants conferring opposing effects on gene expression were enriched in opposite extremes of the phenotypic distribution. Minor alleles of a common regulatory haplotype and noncoding GWAS SNPs were associated with reduced plasma levels of the LIPG gene product endothelial lipase (EL), consistent with its role in HDL-C catabolism. Additionally, we found that a common nonfunctional coding variant associated with HDL-C (rs2000813) is in linkage disequilibrium with a 5β² UTR variant (rs34474737) that decreases LIPG promoter activity. We attribute the gene regulatory role of rs34474737 to the observed association of the coding variant with plasma EL levels and HDL-C. Taken together, the findings show that both rare and common noncoding regulatory variants are important contributors to the allelic spectrum in complex trait loci
