The British Contribution to the Hydrography of Canada
Almost inevitably, the starting point for an account of âThe British Contribution to the Hydrographic Surveying of Canadaâ must start with Captain Cook. B.C. â or before Cook â most other British visitors to Canadian waters had produced âmapsâ rather than â chartsâ . It is harder to decide on a finishing point : although the Canadian Parliament attained authority in 1867 over certain navigational matters and the Canadian Hydrographic Office was formed in 1883, it was not until 1908 that the first Canadian ship Lilloet was available to take over the surveying task and HM ships continued to survey off British Columbia until 1910, off Newfoundland till 1912 â indeed, HMS Challenger was surveying off Labrador from 1932 to 1934. Contract Hydrographic Surveys
National hydrographers â with responsibility for surveying to the accuracy needed for navigational safety â have been under pressure to keep pace with the rapidly increased draught of tankers, operating along new routes to new ports and offshore terminals, and accepting reduced underkeel clearances, at a time when offshore hydrocarbon and other new marine resource activities have called for extensive data collection, interpretation and presentation of quite different sets of parameters. The paper describes how contract surveys have been used to increase the surveying carried out for the safety of navigation in British waters
Microwave ISM Emission Observed by WMAP
We investigate the nature of the diffuse Galactic emission in the Wilkinson
Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) temperature anisotropy data. Substantial
dust-correlated emission is observed at all WMAP frequencies, far exceeding the
expected thermal dust emission in the lowest frequency channels (23, 33, 41
GHz). The WMAP team (Bennett et al.) interpret this emission as dust-correlated
synchrotron radiation, attributing the correlation to the natural association
of relativistic electrons produced by SNae with massive star formation in dusty
clouds, and deriving an upper limit of 5% on the contribution of Draine &
Lazarian spinning dust at K-band (23 GHz). We pursue an alternative
interpretation that much, perhaps most, of the dust-correlated emission at
these frequencies is indeed spinning dust, and explore the spectral dependence
on environment by considering a few specific objects as well as the full sky
average. Models similar to Draine & Lazarian spinning dust provide a good fit
to the full-sky data. The full-sky fit also requires a significant component
with free-free spectrum uncorrelated with \Halpha, possibly hot (~million K)

The On The Fly Imaging Technique
The On-The-Fly (OTF) imaging technique enables single-dish radio telescopes
to construct images of small areas of the sky with greater efficiency and
accuracy. This paper describes the practical application of the OTF imaging
technique. By way of example the implementation of the OTF imaging technique at
the NRAO 12 Meter Telescope is described. Specific requirements for data

The Temperature of the Cosmic Microwave Background
The FIRAS data are independently recalibrated using the WMAP data to obtain a
CMB temperature of 2.7260 +/- 0.0013. Measurements of the temperature of the
cosmic microwave background are reviewed. The determination from the
measurements from the literature is cosmic microwave background temperature of

Top-down legal and regulatory arrangements envisaged by the Kyoto Protocol are practically redundant given inconsistent political commitment to mitigating global climate change and promoting sustainability. A Search for Sub-Millisecond Pulsars
We have conducted a search of 19 southern Galactic globular clusters for
sub-millisecond pulsars at 660 MHz with the Parkes 64-m radio telescope. To
minimize dispersion smearing we used the CPSR baseband recorder, which samples
the 20 MHz observing band at the Nyquist rate. By possessing a complete
description of the signal we could synthesize an optimal filterbank in
software, and in the case of globular clusters of known dispersion measure,
much of the dispersion could be removed using coherent techniques. This allowed
for very high time resolution (25.6 us in most cases), making our searches in
general sensitive to sub-millisecond pulsars with flux densities greater than
about 3 mJy at 50 cm. No new pulsars were discovered, placing important
constraints on the proportion of pulsars with very short spin periods in these

Good vibrations: Do electrical therapeutic massagers work?
Health, leisure and beauty activities are increasing in popularity, with a particular emphasis on self-help and alternative health practices. One product type that has increased sales with this expansion is the hand-held electric massager. These are products that use vibration as a means of alleviating muscular strains and pains, as well as promoting relaxation. Paradoxically, these products are extremely popular as gifts, but are soon discarded. A multi-disciplinary research team was commissioned by a British manufacturer of electrical consumer products to investigate user attitudes and perceptions of existing massagers, to identify areas of user dissatisfaction. The manufacturer was also concerned about a possible stigma attached to these products because of an association with sex aids. This paper provides an
account of the perceptions of both consumers and therapists regarding the use of these products. Identifying the differences between the perceptions of consumers and therapists should help provide a basis for effective integration
of user needs, manufacturer requirements, designersâ skills and sound therapeutic practice. The results provide insight to support the development of more effective hand-held massagers
