    Stress-Energy Tensor for the Massless Spin 1/2 Field in Static Black Hole Spacetimes

    The stress-energy tensor for the massless spin 1/2 field is numerically computed outside and on the event horizons of both charged and uncharged static non-rotating black holes, corresponding to the Schwarzschild, Reissner-Nordstrom and extreme Reissner-Nordstr\"om solutions of Einstein's equations. The field is assumed to be in a thermal state at the black hole temperature. Comparison is made between the numerical results and previous analytic approximations for the stress-energy tensor in these spacetimes. For the Schwarzschild (charge zero) solution, it is shown that the stress-energy differs even in sign from the analytic approximation. For the Reissner-Nordstrom and extreme Reissner-Nordstrom solutions, divergences predicted by the analytic approximations are shown not to exist.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, additional discussio

    Magnetization under High Pressure in MnSi

    The magnetization M(H) has been measured in the weakly helimagnetic itinerant compound MnSi under high pressure up to 10.2 kbar and high magnetic field up to 9 Tesla. We interpret the simultaneous decrease under pressure of the saturated magnetization, psp_s, and the Curie temperature, % T_c in the frame of the self-consistent renormalization theory (SCR) of spin fluctuations. From the analysis of the so-called Arrot-plot (H/p[H,T]H/p [ H,T ] versus p2[H,T]p^2[ H,T ] ) and the respective volume dependence of psp_s and TcT_c, we estimate the evolution of the characteristic spin fluctuation temperatures, T0T_0 and TAT_A when the system approaches its critical pressure, PcP_c=15 kbar, corresponding to the disappearance of the long range magnetic order at T=0.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures.     Harmonic crossover exponents in O(n) models with the pseudo-epsilon expansion approach

    We determine the crossover exponents associated with the traceless tensorial quadratic field, the third- and fourth-harmonic operators for O(n) vector models by re-analyzing the existing six-loop fixed dimension series with pseudo-epsilon expansion. Within this approach we obtain the most accurate theoretical estimates that are in optimum agreement with other theoretical and experimental results.Comment: 12 pages, 1 figure.     Occupational exposure to N-nitrosamines and pesticides and risk of pancreatic cancer

    Objectives Animal evidence shows that N-nitrosamines and similar xenobiotic compounds are pancreatic carcinogens. We aimed to determine whether occupational exposure to N-nitrosamines or to pesticides increases risk of pancreatic cancer development. Methods Participants (504 cases, 643 controls) in a population-based case-control study (The Queensland Pancreatic Cancer Study) provided data on demographic, medical and lifestyle factors and lifetime job histories. Specific questions were asked regarding work in rubber and leather industries, metalworking jobs and occupational or direct use of pesticides on animals or crops. An occupational hygienist reviewed this information (blind to case status) to assess likelihood of exposure to N-nitrosamines and pesticides, and estimated level and frequency of such exposures. Results No associations were found for risk of pancreatic cancer and occupational exposure to N-nitrosamines (OR=0.85, 95% CI 0.51 to 1.42) and no associations were seen with level or frequency of exposure. No associations were observed for ever exposure to pesticides in general (OR=0.90, 95% CI 0.61 to 1.33) or to any of the pesticide subgroups. Stratification by history of cigarette smoking did not change these results. Conclusions This comprehensive analysis of a large case-control study does not support an association between occupational exposure to N-nitrosamines or pesticide use and risk of pancreatic cancer

    The effect of different imaging techniques for the visualisation of evidence in court on jury comprehension

    Evidence presented within a courtroom should be clear so that the members of the jury can understand it. The presentation of distressing images, such as human remains, can have a negative effect on the jury since photographic images may evoke emotional responses. Therefore, it is important to understand how other visual mediums may improve comprehension, bias, or distress individuals. For this study, 91 individuals were randomly assigned one of three visual evidence formats in a mock courtroom exercise. These included photographs, 3D visualisations, or a 3D-printed model. The results show that the use of 3D imaging improves the juror’s understanding of technical language used within a courtroom, which in turn better informs the juror’s in their decision-making

    Singlet Stripe Phases in the planar t-J Model

    The energies of singlet stripe phases in which a plane is broken up into spin liquid ladders by lines of holes, is examined. If the holes were static then patterns containing spin liquids with a finite spin gap are favored. The case of dynamic holes is treated by assembling t-J ladders oriented perpendicular to the stripes. For a wide region around J/t≈1J/t \approx 1 the hole-hole correlations in a single ladder are found to be predominantly charge density wave type but an attraction between hole pairs on adjacent ladders leads to a stripe phase. A quantum mechanical melting of the hole lines at smaller J/tJ/t values leads to a Bose condensate of hole pairs, i.e. a superconducting phase.Comment: 5 pages, uuencoded compressed PostScript file including 5 figures, ETH-TH/942

    Magnetic phase diagram and transport properties of FeGe_2

    We have used resistivity measurements to study the magnetic phase diagram of the itinerant antiferromagnet FeGe_2 in the temperature range from 0.3->300 K in magnetic fields up to 16 T. In contrast to theoretical predictions, the incommensurate spin density wave phase is found to be stable at least up to 16 T, with an estimated critical field \mu _0H_c of ~ 30 T. We have also studied the low temperature magnetoresistance in the [100], [110], and [001] directions. The transverse magnetoresistance is well described by a power law for magnetic fields above 1 T with no saturation observed at high fields. We discuss our results in terms of the magnetic structure and the calculated electronic bandstructure of FeGe_2. We have also observed, for the first time in this compound, Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations in the transverse magnetoresistance with a frequency of 190 +- 10 T for a magnetic field along [001].Comment: 13 pages, RevTeX, 7 postscript figures, to appear in Journal of Physics: Condensed Matte

    Spin and charge excitations in incommensurate spin density waves

    Collective excitations both for spin- and charge-channels are investigated in incommensurate spin density wave (or stripe) states on two-dimensional Hubbard model. By random phase approximation, the dynamical susceptibility \chi(q,\omega) is calculated for full range of (q,\omega) with including all higher harmonics components. An intricate landscape of the spectra in \chi(q,\omega) is obtained. We discuss the anisotropy of the dispersion cones for spin wave excitations, and for the phason excitation related to the motion of the stripe line. Inelastic neutron experiments on Cr and its alloys and stripe states of underdoped cuprates are proposed

    Magnetic phase diagram of the Hubbard model

    The competition between commensurate and incommensurate spin-density-wave phases in the infinite-dimensional single-band Hubbard model is examined with quantum Monte Carlo simulation and strong and weak coupling approximations. Quantum fluctuations modify the weak-coupling phase diagram by factors of order unity and produce remarkable agreement with the quantum Monte Carlo data, but strong-coupling theories (that map onto effective Falicov-Kimball models) display pathological behavior.
