An alternative search for the electron capture of Te-123

A search for the electron capture of Te-123 has been performed using CdZnTe detectors. After a measuring time of 195 h no signal could be found resulting in a lower half-life limt of T1/2>3.21016T_{1/2} > 3.2 \cdot 10^{16} yrs (95 % CL) for this process. This clearly discriminates between existing experimental results which differ by six orders of magnitude and our data are in strong favour of the result with longer half-lifes.Comment: 2 pages, 2 eps-figures, reanalysis of data set

NLO prescription for unintegrated parton distributions

We show how parton distributions unintegrated over the parton transverse momentum, k_t, may be generated, at NLO accuracy, from the known integrated (DGLAP-evolved) parton densities determined from global data analyses. A few numerical examples are given, which demonstrate that sufficient accuracy is obtained by keeping only the LO splitting functions together with the NLO integrated parton densities. However, it is important to keep the precise kinematics of the process, by taking the scale to be the virtuality rather than the transverse momentum, in order to be consistent with the calculation of the NLO splitting functions.Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures. v2: version to appear in Eur. Inhibition of glyoxylate conversion to oxalate in cultured human cells by the carbonyl-scavenging drug, aminoguanidine

Calcium oxalate is the most frequent cause of kidney stones, and is responsible for the damage to kidneys and other organs observed in inherited disorders of oxalate metabolism. Most oxalate produced in the body is derived from its metabolic precursor, glyoxylate. Thus, any means of scavenging glyoxylate to a non-toxic product, thereby diverting it away from oxalate synthesis, has considerable therapeutic implications. Here we show that aminoguanidine, a compound with a proven safety record and used for many years to prevent long-term complications of diabetes, binds glyoxylate covalently and reduces its conversion to oxalate by human liver- and lymphocyte-derived cell lines by >90%. We propose that scavenging glyoxylate with aminoguanidine or its congeners may provide a means of reducing oxalate production in vivo, and advocate the tissue culture system described here as a convenient means for testing such agents in vitro. A serendipitous finding to emerge from our study was the abiotic and strongly pH-dependent formation of oxalate from ascorbate, which has implications for the contribution of ascorbate to urine oxalate excretion

Active Metamaterials with Negative Static Electric Susceptibility

Although well‐established textbook arguments suggest that static electric susceptibility χ(0) must be positive in “all bodies,” it has been pointed out that materials that are not in thermodynamic equilibrium are not necessarily subject to this restriction. Media with inverted populations of atomic and molecular energy levels have been predicted theoretically to exhibit a χ(0) < 0 state, however the systems envisioned require reduced temperature, reduced pressure, and an external pump laser to maintain the population inversion. Further, the existence of χ(0) < 0 has never been confirmed experimentally. Here, a completely different approach is taken to the question of χ(0) < 0 and a design concept to achieve “true” χ(0) < 0 is proposed based on active metamaterials with internal power sources. Two active metamaterial structures are fabricated that, despite still having their power sources implemented externally for reasons of practical convenience, provide evidence in support of the general concept. Effective values are readily achieved at room temperature and pressure and are tunable throughout the range of stability −1 < χ(0) < 0, resulting in experimentally‐determined magnitudes that are over one thousand times greater than those predicted previously. Since χ(0) < 0 is the missing electric analog of diamagnetism, this work opens the door to new technological capabilities such as stable electrostatic levitation

Improving the Representation and Conversion of Mathematical Formulae by Considering their Textual Context

Mathematical formulae represent complex semantic information in a concise form. Especially in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, mathematical formulae are crucial to communicate information, e.g., in scientific papers, and to perform computations using computer algebra systems. Enabling computers to access the information encoded in mathematical formulae requires machine-readable formats that can represent both the presentation and content, i.e., the semantics, of formulae. Exchanging such information between systems additionally requires conversion methods for mathematical representation formats. We analyze how the semantic enrichment of formulae improves the format conversion process and show that considering the textual context of formulae reduces the error rate of such conversions. Our main contributions are: (1) providing an openly available benchmark dataset for the mathematical format conversion task consisting of a newly created test collection, an extensive, manually curated gold standard and task-specific evaluation metrics; (2) performing a quantitative evaluation of state-of-the-art tools for mathematical format conversions; (3) presenting a new approach that considers the textual context of formulae to reduce the error rate for mathematical format conversions. Our benchmark dataset facilitates future research on mathematical format conversions as well as research on many problems in mathematical information retrieval. Because we annotated and linked all components of formulae, e.g., identifiers, operators and other entities, to Wikidata entries, the gold standard can, for instance, be used to train methods for formula concept discovery and recognition. Such methods can then be applied to improve mathematical information retrieval systems, e.g., for semantic formula search, recommendation of mathematical content, or detection of mathematical plagiarism.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure

Observations of the J = 2 → 1 line of carbon monoxide in the NGC 2024 nebula

    Get PDF
Observations have been made of the J = 2 → 1 transition of 12CO and 13CO in the molecular cloud near NGC 2024. The most intense emission comes from the central regions of the nebula close to areas of high optical extinction. The source contains two hotspots, but no significant velocity gradient or line-broadening was observed. This is consistent with a model in which the emission arises mainly from the high-density interface between the expanding HII region and a neutral cloud. Measurements of the 13CO isotope indicates that τ13 > 1.7, but there is insufficient information to derive the density in the region. Analysis of data for Mon R2, however, using the radially collapsing cloud model, indicates a hydrogen density of ~2 × 104 cm-3 for that source

Residual allergenicity of amino acid-based and extensively hydrolysed cow’s milk formulas

Background. Criteria for labelling infant feeds as suitable for the dietary management of cow’s milk protein allergy (CMPA) rely on proving the hypoallergenicity of such feeds or clinical studies showing that the feeds are tolerated by 90% of children with proven CMPA. South African (SA) labelling legislation does not indicate what testing is necessary to prove hypoallergenicity.Objectives. To evaluate all extensively hydrolysed cow’s milk formulas and amino acid-based formulas available in SA for residual allergen content, protein size and amino-acid content.Results. All amino-acid and extensively hydrolysed formulas were found to be similar in composition, with no residual cow’s milk allergens detectable by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Furthermore, proteins were absent and only small molecules in the size range of amino acids and possibly of very small oligopeptides were detected.Conclusions. These findings indicate that the formulas are extremely likely to be compliant with the definition of hypoallergenicity as tolerance in 90% of proven sufferers from cow’s milk allergy. The formulas may therefore be labelled as suitable for the dietary management of infants with CMPA

Dark Matter and Baryon Fraction at the Virial Radius in Abell 2256

We combine ASCA and ROSAT X-ray data to constrain the radial dark matter distribution in the primary cluster of A2256, free from the isothermality assumption. Both instruments indicate that the temperature declines with radius. The region including the central galaxy has a multicomponent spectrum, which results in a wide range of allowed central temperatures. We find that the secondary subcluster has a temperature and luminosity typical of a rich cluster; however, the ASCA temperature map shows no signs of an advanced merger. It is therefore assumed that the primary cluster is in hydrostatic equilibrium. The data then require dark matter density profiles steeper than rho ~ r^-2.5 in its outer part. Acceptable models have a total mass within r=1.5 Mpc (the virial radius) of 6.0+-1.5 10^14 Msun at the 90% confidence, about 1.6 times smaller than the mass derived assuming isothermality. Near the center, dark matter profiles with and without central cusps are consistent with the data. Total mass inside the X-ray core (r=0.26 Mpc) is 1.28+-0.08 10^14 Msun, which exceeds the isothermal value by a factor of 1.4. Although the confidence intervals above may be underestimates since they do not include possible asymmetry and departures from hydrostatic equilibrium, the behavior of the mass distribution, if applicable to other clusters, can bring into better agreement X-ray and lensing mass estimates, but aggravate the ``baryon catastrophe''. The observed considerable increase in the gas content with radius, not anticipated by simulations, may imply that a significant fraction of thermal gas energy comes from sources other than gravity and merger shocks.Comment: Added dynamic argument against advanced merger.
