Aeroplane design study STOL airliner (A71). Part 1- configuration description and data
The interest in STOL airliners was reflected in the
choice of a 100-118 passenger short range aircraft of this
type as the 1971 design project. In addition to the use of
the study for detailed investigation by the students of
Aircraft Design it also served as the basis for an
investigation of the low speed lift and control problems
of STOL aircraft.
This report is concerned with a description of the
configuration adopted and specification of geometric and
aerodynamic data. As such it is the first part of the
complete reporting of the investigation, subsequent parts
being concerned with the more detailed work.
The aircraft was designed to operate from 2000 ft long
single runways and have a cruising speed of up to 11 - 0.83
at 30,000 ft altitude. The estimated gross weight is
115,000 lb and when landing at 100,000 lb weight the approach
speed is 79 knots. The high lift coefficients necessitated
by this are obtained either by externally blown jet flaps or
an augmenter wing arrangement
A Far-Infrared Survey of Molecular Cloud Cores
We present a catalogue of molecular cloud cores drawn from high latitude,
medium opacity clouds, using the all-sky IRAS Sky Survey Atlas (ISSA) images at
60 and 100~m. The typical column densities of the cores are cm and the typical volume densities are cm. They are therefore significantly less dense than
many other samples obtained in other ways. Those cloud cores with IRAS point
sources are seen to be already forming stars, but this is found to be only a
small fraction of the total number of cores. The fraction of the cores in the
protostellar stage is used to estimate the prestellar timescale - the time
until the formation of a hydrostatically supported protostellar object. We
argue, on the basis of a comparison with other samples, that a trend exists for
the prestellar lifetime of a cloud core to decrease with the mean column
density and number density of the core. We compare this with model predictions
and show that the data are consistent with star formation regulated by the
ionisation fraction.Comment: 13 pages, 7 figure
Implicit memory and cognitive aging
It is well documented that explicit (declarative, conscious) memory declines in normal aging. Studies have shown a progressive reduction in this form of memory with age, and healthy older adults (typically aged 65+ years) usually perform worse than younger adults (typically aged 18-30 years) on laboratory tests of explicit memory such as recall and recognition. In contrast, it is less clear whether implicit (procedural, unconscious) memory declines or remains stable in normal aging. Implicit memory is evident when previous experiences affect (e.g., facilitate) performance on tasks that do not require conscious recollection of those experiences. This can manifest in rehearsed motor skills, such as playing a musical instrument, but is typically indexed in the laboratory by the greater ease with which previously studied information is processed relative to non-studied information (e.g., repetition priming). While a vast amount of research has accumulated to suggest that implicit memory remains relatively stable over the adult lifespan, and is similar in samples of young and older adults, other studies have in contrast revealed that implicit memory is subject to age-related decline. Improving methods for determining whether implicit memory declines or remains stable with age is an important goal for future research, as the issue not only has significant implications for an aging society regarding interventions likely to ameliorate the effects of age-related explicit memory decline, but can also inform our theoretical understanding of human memory systems

A comparison of operationally determined atmospheric densities from satellite orbit solutions and the exospheric temperature from the Jacchia-Roberts model
Operational orbit determination by the Flight Dynamics Division at the Goddard Space Flight Center has yielded a data base of orbit solutions covering the onset of solar cycle 22. Solutions for nine satellites include an estimated drag adjustment parameter (rho sub 1) determined by the Goddard Trajectory Determination System (GTDS). The rho sub 1 is used to evaluate correlations between density variations and changes in the following: 10.7-centimeter wavelength solar flux (F sub 10.7), the geomagnetic index A sub p, and two exospheric temperatures (T sub c and T sub infinity) adapted from the Jacchia-Roberts atmospheric density model in GTDS. T sub c depends on the daily and 81-day centered mean F sub 10.7; T sub infinity depends on T sub c and the geomagnetic index K sub p values. The highest correlations are between density and T sub infinity. Correlations with T sub c and F sub 10.7 are lower by 9 and 10 percent, respectively. For most cases, correlations with A sub p are considerably lower; however, significant correlations with A sub p were found for some high-inclination, moderate-altitude orbits. Results from this analysis enhance the understanding of the drag model and the accommodation of atmospheric density variations in the operational orbit determination support. The degree of correlation demonstrates the sensitivity of the orbit determination process to drag variations and to the input parameters that characterize aspects of the atmospheric density model. To this extent, the degree of correlation provides a measure of performance for methods of selecting or modeling the thermospheric densities using the solar F sub 10.7 and geomagnetic data as input to the process
An effect of age on implicit memory that is not due to explicit contamination: implications for single and multiple-systems theories
Recognition memory is typically weaker in healthy older relative to young adults, while performance on implicit tests (e.g., repetition priming) is often comparable between groups. Such observations are commonly taken as evidence for independent explicit and implicit memory systems. On a picture version of the continuous identification with recognition (CID-R) task, we found a reliable age-related reduction in recognition memory, while the age effect on priming did not reach statistical significance (Experiment 1). This pattern was consistent with the predictions of a formal single-system model. Experiment 2 replicated these observations using separate priming (continuous identification; CID) and recognition phases, while a combined data analysis revealed a significant effect of age on priming. In Experiment 3, we provide evidence that priming in this task is unaffected by explicit processing, and we conclude that the age difference in priming is unlikely to have been driven by differences in explicit processing between groups of young and older adults (“explicit contamination”). The results support the view that explicit and implicit expressions of memory are driven by a single underlying memory system
Age effects on explicit and implicit memory
It is well-documented that explicit memory (e.g., recognition) declines with age. In contrast, many argue that implicit memory (e.g., priming) is preserved in healthy aging. For example, priming on tasks such as perceptual identification is often not statistically different in groups of young and older adults. Such observations are commonly taken as evidence for distinct explicit and implicit learning/memory systems. In this article we discuss several lines of evidence that challenge this view. We describe how patterns of differential age-related decline may arise from differences in the ways in which the two forms of memory are commonly measured, and review recent research suggesting that under improved measurement methods, implicit memory is not age-invariant. Formal computational models are of considerable utility in revealing the nature of underlying systems. We report the results of applying single and multiple-systems models to data on age effects in implicit and explicit memory. Model comparison clearly favors the single-system view. Implications for the memory systems debate are discussed
