Non-Abelian quantized Hall states of electrons at filling factors 12/5 and 13/5 in the first excited Landau level
We present results of extensive numerical calculations on the ground state of
electrons in the first excited (n=1) Landau level with Coulomb interactions,
and including non-zero thickness effects, for filling factors 12/5 and 13/5 in
the torus geometry. In a region that includes these experimentally-relevant
values, we find that the energy spectrum and the overlaps with the trial states
support the previous hypothesis that the system is in the non-Abelian k = 3
liquid phase we introduced in a previous paper.Comment: 5 pages (Revtex4), 7 figure
Quasiholes and fermionic zero modes of paired fractional quantum Hall states: the mechanism for nonabelian statistics
The quasihole states of several paired states, the Pfaffian, Haldane-Rezayi,
and 331 states, which under certain conditions may describe electrons at
filling factor or 5/2, are studied, analytically and numerically, in
the spherical geometry, for the Hamiltonians for which the ground states are
known exactly. We also find all the ground states (without quasiparticles) of
these systems in the toroidal geometry. In each case, a complete set of
linearly-independent functions that are energy eigenstates of zero energy is
found explicitly. For fixed positions of the quasiholes, the number of
linearly-independent states is for the Pfaffian, for the
Haldane-Rezayi state; these degeneracies are needed if these systems are to
possess nonabelian statistics, and they agree with predictions based on
conformal field theory. The dimensions of the spaces of states for each number
of quasiholes agree with numerical results for moderate system sizes. The
effects of tunneling and of the Zeeman term are discussed for the 331 and
Haldane-Rezayi states, as well as the relation to Laughlin states of electron
pairs. A model introduced by Ho, which was supposed to connect the 331 and
Pfaffian states, is found to have the same degeneracies of zero-energy states
as the 331 state, except at its Pfaffian point where it is much more highly
degenerate than either the 331 or the Pfaffian. We introduce a modification of
the model which has the degeneracies of the 331 state everywhere including the
Pfaffian point; at the latter point, tunneling reduces the degeneracies to
those of the Pfaffian state. An experimental difference is pointed out between
the Laughlin states of electron pairs and the other paired states, in the
current-voltage response when electrons tunnel into the edge. And there's more.Comment: 43 pages, requires RevTeX. The 14 figures and 2 tables are available

Spin-Peierls states of quantum antiferromagnets on the lattice
We discuss the quantum paramagnetic phases of Heisenberg antiferromagnets on
the 1/5-depleted square lattice found in . The possible phases of
the quantum dimer model on this lattice are obtained by a mapping to a
quantum-mechanical height model. In addition to the ``decoupled'' phases found
earlier, we find a possible intermediate spin-Peierls phase with
spontaneously-broken lattice symmetry. Experimental signatures of the different
quantum paramagnetic phases are discussed.Comment: 9 pages; 2 eps figure
Near-field interaction between domain walls in adjacent Permalloy nanowires
The magnetostatic interaction between two oppositely charged transverse
domain walls (DWs)in adjacent Permalloy nanowires is experimentally
demonstrated. The dependence of the pinning strength on wire separation is
investigated for distances between 13 and 125 nm, and depinning fields up to 93
Oe are measured. The results can be described fully by considering the
interaction between the full complex distribution of magnetic charge within
rigid, isolated DWs. This suggests the DW internal structure is not appreciably
disturbed by the pinning potential, and that they remain rigid although the
pinning strength is significant. This work demonstrates the possibility of
non-contact DW trapping without DW perturbation and full continuous flexibility
of the pinning potential type and strength. The consequence of the interaction
on DW based data storage schemes is evaluated.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, 1 page supplimentary material (supporting.ps
Single-particle dynamics of the Anderson model: a local moment approach
A non-perturbative local moment approach to single-particle dynamics of the
general asymmetric Anderson impurity model is developed. The approach
encompasses all energy scales and interaction strengths. It captures thereby
strong coupling Kondo behaviour, including the resultant universal scaling
behaviour of the single-particle spectrum; as well as the mixed valent and
essentially perturbative empty orbital regimes. The underlying approach is
physically transparent and innately simple, and as such is capable of practical
extension to lattice-based models within the framework of dynamical mean-field
theory.Comment: 26 pages, 9 figure

Inferring the neutron star equation of state from binary inspiral waveforms
The properties of neutron star matter above nuclear density are not precisely
known. Gravitational waves emitted from binary neutron stars during their late
stages of inspiral and merger contain imprints of the neutron-star equation of
state. Measuring departures from the point-particle limit of the late inspiral
waveform allows one to measure properties of the equation of state via
gravitational wave observations. This and a companion talk by J. S. Read
reports a comparison of numerical waveforms from simulations of inspiraling
neutron-star binaries, computed for equations of state with varying stiffness.
We calculate the signal strength of the difference between waveforms for
various commissioned and proposed interferometric gravitational wave detectors
and show that observations at frequencies around 1 kHz will be able to measure
a compactness parameter and constrain the possible neutron-star equations of
state.Comment: Talk given at the 12th Marcel Grossman Meeting, Paris, France, 12-18

Revealing the tidal scars of the Small Magellanic Cloud
Due to their close proximity, the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds (SMC/LMC)
provide natural laboratories for understanding how galaxies form and evolve.
With the goal of determining the structure and dynamical state of the SMC, we
present new spectroscopic data for 3000 SMC red giant branch stars
observed using the AAOmega spectrograph at the Anglo-Australian Telescope. We
complement our data with further spectroscopic measurements from previous
studies that used the same instrumental configuration and proper motions from
the \textit{Gaia} Data Release 2 catalogue. Analysing the photometric and
stellar kinematic data, we find that the SMC centre of mass presents a
conspicuous offset from the velocity centre of its associated \mbox{H\,{\sc
i}} gas, suggesting that the SMC gas is likely to be far from dynamical
equilibrium. Furthermore, we find evidence that the SMC is currently undergoing
tidal disruption by the LMC within 2\,kpc of the centre of the SMC, and
possibly all the way in to the very core. This is evidenced by a net outward
motion of stars from the SMC centre along the direction towards the LMC and
apparent tangential anisotropy at all radii. The latter is expected if the SMC
is undergoing significiant tidal stripping, as we demonstrate using a suite of
-body simulations of the SMC/LMC system disrupting around the Milky Way.
These results suggest that dynamical models for the SMC that assume a steady
state will need to be revisited.Comment: Revised version submitted to MNRAS after referee report, 18 pages, 18
