VTOL in ground effect flows for closely spaced jets

    Get PDF
Results of a series of in ground effect twin jet tests are presented along with flow models for closely spaced jets to help predict pressure and upwash forces on simulated aircraft surfaces. The isolated twin jet tests revealed unstable fountains over a range of spacings and jet heights, regions of below ambient pressure on the ground, and negative pressure differential in the upwash flow field. A separate computer code was developed for vertically oriented, incompressible jets. This model more accurately reflects fountain behavior without fully formed wall jets, and adequately predicts ground isobars, upwash dynamic pressure decay, and fountain lift force variation with height above ground

Bosonic Operator Methods for the Quark Model

Quark model matrix elements can be computed using bosonic operators and the holomorphic representation for the harmonic oscillator. The technique is illustrated for normal and exotic baryons for an arbitrary number of colors. The computations are much simpler than those using conventional quark model wavefunctions

1/N_c Expansion of the Heavy Baryon Isgur-Wise Functions

The 1/N_c expansion of the heavy baryon Isgur-Wise functions is discussed. Because of the contracted SU(2N_f) light quark spin-flavor symmetry, the universality relations among the Isgur-Wise functions of \Lambda_b to \Lambda_c and \Sigma_b^{(*)} to \Sigma_c^{(*)} are valid up to the order of 1/N_c^2.Comment: 7 pages, latex, no figures, to appear in Phys. Terahertz Hall Measurements On Optimally Doped Single Crystal Bi-2212

The infrared Hall angle in optimally doped single crystal Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x\rm Bi_2 Sr_2 Ca Cu_2 O_{8+x} was measured from 3.05 to 21.75 meV as a continuous function of temperature from 25 to 300\,K. In the normal state, the temperature dependence of the real part of the cotangent of the infrared Hall angle obeys the same power law as dc measurements. The measured Hall frequency ωH\rm \omega_H is significantly larger than the expected value based upon ARPES data analyzed in terms of the relaxation time approximation. This discrepancy as well as the temperature dependence of Re(cotθH)\rm Re(\cot{\theta_H}) and ωH\omega_H is well described by a Fermi liquid theory in which current vertex corrections produced by electron-magnon scattering are included.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figure

The structure of lightning flashes HF-UHF: 12 September 1975, Atlanta, Georgia

Simultaneous measurement of sferics at 3, 30, 139, and 295 MHz were made during thunderstorms. Wideband electronics and an analogue tape recorder continuously recorded the radiation from lightning with about 300 kHz of bandwidth. The data were obtained during the passage of a cold front. Flashing rate, burst rate and the structure of individual flashes were recorded. The record of a typical flash begins with a sudden burst of closely spaced pulses whose temporal structure is typical of the stepped leader, and ends in a large pulse suggestive of a first return stroke. The remainder of the flash consists of a sequence of pulses of varying amplitude separated by quiet periods of the order of milliseconds. The shape of these pulses and the temporal structure suggest that the first few large pulses are return strokes. Other discharges begin with widely spaced discrete pulses and resemble the preceding discharge less the leader and return stroke phase. The radiation exhibits a similar structure, at each of the frequencies monitored

The Delta-Delta Intermediate State in 1S0 Nucleon-Nucleon Scattering From Effective Field Theory

We examine the role of the Delta-Delta intermediate state in low energy NN scattering using effective field theory. Theories both with and without pions are discussed. They are regulated with dimensional regularization and MSbar subtraction. We find that the leading effects of the Delta-Delta state can be absorbed by a redefinition of the contact terms in a theory with nucleons only. It does not remove the requirement of a higher dimension operator to reproduce data out to moderate momentum. The explicit decoupling of the Delta-Delta state is shown for the theory without pions.Comment: 16 pages, 3 figures, uses harvma
