The Knowledge of the Grid: A Grid Ontology

This paper presents a knowledge architecture and set of ontologies that can be used as the foundation to facilitate the matching of abstract resource requests to services and resources, to determine the functional equivalence of Grid middle wares and deployments and to allow the description of ‘hybrid’ compound Grids composed of individual heterogeneous Grids. This is necessary as in all these cases what is required is mediation between different views or descriptions of Grids, which requires a formal reference vocabulary. In 1978 the international committee of directors of medical magazines met informally in Vancouver, British Columbia (Canada), to establish, for the first time, the guidelines that, in relation to the format, the manuscripts sent to their magazines should contemplate. The group became known as Vancouver group. Their “Requirements of uniformity for the manuscripts sent to Biomedical Magazines” were published for the first time in 1979. In november of 2003 the committee published the last version, the sixth, in which the included topics go beyond the preparation of the manuscript. In any case, this last version of the “Vancouver Norms” makes expressed reference to the ethical aspects that converge when sending to publish a work. These ethical manifestations should be made explicit in the presentation letter, to which the new requirements give a special emphasis. It is necessary to establish a debate on the execution of the requirements of uniformity, as well as to begin, to continue and to vivify the reflection on the transcendence that supposes to fulfil them, with the purpose of facilitating the methodological normalization of the works subjected to publication

Europe counts marine life

Over 500 marine scientists are working together within the framework of MarBEF - a European network of excellence, which started in March 2004. Of all the seas, the European seas are among the most studied in the world. By bringing this expertise and knowledge together, MarBEF aims at a better understanding of long-term and large-scale distribution patterns and functionalities of biodiversity across marine ecosystems. To inventory this wealth of marine life, the European Register of Marine Species (ERMS), at this moment containing nearly 30,000 species names, is adopted and will serve as the reference list and taxonomic backbone within MarBEF. ERMS has been put into a relational database and will be maintained and regularly updated online by a consortium of taxonomic experts. The taxonomic register will be supplemented with biogeographic, ecological and socio-economic information, together with species illustrations, original descriptions and vernacular names. When available, links will be provided with other online species information systems. EurOBIS, the European node of the Ocean biogeographic Information System, is a distributed system that integrates individual datasets on biogeographic information into one large consolidated database and provides the end-user with a fully searchable geographic interface. EurOBIS already captures and freely communicates over 350,000 distribution data from 14,000 species, online. When combining these data with biological, physical, chemical and geologic data, our understanding of the ecosystem will greatly improve, resulting in better ecosystem-based management plans. The Flanders Marine Institute is taking a leading role in these major European data integrating projects within MarBEF and has recently developed online tools for ERMS and EurOBIS (http://www.marbef.org/data)

A New Family of Multistep Methods with Improved Phase Lag Characteristics for the Integration of Orbital Problems

In this work we introduce a new family of ten-step linear multistep methods for the integration of orbital problems. The new methods are constructed by adopting a new methodology which improves the phase lag characteristics by vanishing both the phase lag function and its first derivatives at a specific frequency.
