Color and texture associations in voice-induced synesthesia
Voice-induced synesthesia, a form of synesthesia in which synesthetic perceptions are induced by the sounds of people's voices, appears to be relatively rare and has not been systematically studied. In this study we investigated the synesthetic color and visual texture perceptions experienced in response to different types of “voice quality” (e.g., nasal, whisper, falsetto). Experiences of three different groups—self-reported voice synesthetes, phoneticians, and controls—were compared using both qualitative and quantitative analysis in a study conducted online. Whilst, in the qualitative analysis, synesthetes used more color and texture terms to describe voices than either phoneticians or controls, only weak differences, and many similarities, between groups were found in the quantitative analysis. Notable consistent results between groups were the matching of higher speech fundamental frequencies with lighter and redder colors, the matching of “whispery” voices with smoke-like textures, and the matching of “harsh” and “creaky” voices with textures resembling dry cracked soil. These data are discussed in the light of current thinking about definitions and categorizations of synesthesia, especially in cases where individuals apparently have a range of different synesthetic inducers

Giant microwave photoresistance of two-dimensional electron gas
We measure microwave frequency (4-40 GHz) photoresistance at low magnetic
field B, in high mobility 2D electron gas samples, excited by signals applied
to a transmission line fabricated on the sample surface. Oscillatory
photoresistance vs B is observed. For excitation at the cyclotron resonance
frequency, we find an unprecedented, giant relative photoresistance (\Delta
R)/R of up to 250 percent. The photoresistance is apparently proportional to
the square root of applied power, and disappears as the temperature is

The mission oriented terminal area simulation facility
The Mission Oriented Terminal Area Simulation (MOTAS) was developed to provide an ATC environment in which flight management and flight operations research studies can be conducted with a high degree of realism. This facility provides a flexible and comprehensive simulation of the airborne, ground-based and communication aspects of the airport terminal area environment. Major elements of the simulation are: an airport terminal area environment model, two air traffic controller stations, several aircraft models and simulator cockpits, four pseudo pilot stations, and a realistic air-ground communications network. MOTAS has been used for one study with the DC-9 simulator and a series of data link studies are planned in the near future
Spin-dependent transport in molecular tunnel junctions
We present measurements of magnetic tunnel junctions made using a
self-assembled-monolayer molecular barrier. Ni/octanethiol/Ni samples were
fabricated in a nanopore geometry. The devices exhibit significant changes in
resistance as the angle between the magnetic moments in the two electrodes is
varied, demonstrating that low-energy electrons can traverse the molecular
barrier while maintaining spin coherence. An analysis of the voltage and
temperature dependence of the data suggests that the spin-coherent transport
signals can be degraded by localized states in the molecular barriers.Comment: 4 pages, 5 color figure
