Production of nanoporous sorbents by partial steam-air conversion of charcoal
An effective sorbent is activated carbon having a developed nanoporous structure with an average pore diameter about 2-4 nm. Perspective method of activated carbon production is the partial steam conversion of the coal bed in boiler furnaces of power plants. The additional thermal energy is produced by burning the syngas. The aim of this work is to study the co-production of activated carbon and syngas by partial steam-air conversion of charcoal. Due to the presence of oxygen in the flow, intensification of conversion occurs. In the laboratory bed reactor, the mass loss curves and the syngas composition were obtained at temperatures of 800°C and 900°C. Two zones with different reaction mechanisms were identified on the height of the bed. The reactions between carbon and steam shift toward hydrogen formation in the oxygen zone. The dependence of the porous structure of the activated carbon on the conversion degree of the raw material is obtained. The maximum of micropores is formed at a conversion degree of 0.5. The material and energy balance of the partial conversion in the laboratory reactor was estimated. © 2018 Institute of Physics Publishing. Curve crossing in linear potential grids: the quasidegeneracy approximation
The quasidegeneracy approximation [V. A. Yurovsky, A. Ben-Reuven, P. S.
Julienne, and Y. B. Band, J. Phys. B {\bf 32}, 1845 (1999)] is used here to
evaluate transition amplitudes for the problem of curve crossing in linear
potential grids involving two sets of parallel potentials. The approximation
describes phenomena, such as counterintuitive transitions and saturation
(incomplete population transfer), not predictable by the assumption of
independent crossings. Also, a new kind of oscillations due to quantum
interference (different from the well-known St\"uckelberg oscillations) is
disclosed, and its nature discussed. The approximation can find applications in
many fields of physics, where multistate curve crossing problems occur.Comment: LaTeX, 8 pages, 8 PostScript figures, uses REVTeX and psfig,

Effective attraction between oscillating electrons in a plasmoid via acoustic waves exchange
We consider the effective interaction between electrons due to the exchange
of virtual acoustic waves in a low temperature plasma. Electrons are supposed
to participate in rapid radial oscillations forming a spherically symmetric
plasma structure. We show that under certain conditions this effective
interaction can result in the attraction between oscillating electrons and can
be important for the dynamics of a plasmoid. Some possible applications of the
obtained results to the theory of natural long-lived plasma structures are also
discussed.Comment: 14 pages in LaTeX2e, two columns, 3 eps figures; minimal changes,

Scattering of surface plasmon polaritons by one-dimensional inhomogeneities
The scattering of surface plasmons polaritons by a one-dimensional defect of
the surface is theoretically studied, by means of both Rayleigh and modal
expansions. The considered defects are either relief perturbations or
variations in the permittivity of the metal. The dependence of transmission,
reflection and out-of-plane scattering on parameters defining the defect is
presented. We find that the radiated energy is forwardly directed (with respect
to the surface plasmon propagation) in the case of an impedance defect.
However, for relief defects, the radiated energy may be directed into backward
or forward (or both) directions, depending on the defect width.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, corrected typos, some minor modifications in

Brevundimonas halotolerans sp. nov., Brevundimonas poindexterae sp. nov. and Brevundimonas staleyi sp. nov., prosthecate bacteria from aquatic habitats
Eight strains of Gram-negative, bacteroid-shaped, prosthecate bacteria, isolated from brackish water (MCS24T, MCS17 and MCS35), the marine environment (CM260, CM272 and CM282) and activated sludge (FWC40T and FWC43T), were characterized using a polyphasic approach. Analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences determined that all strains were affiliated to the alphaproteobacterial genus Brevundimonas, forming three distinct phyletic lineages within the genus. The strains grew best with 5–30 g NaCl l-1 at 20–30 °C. DNA G+C contents for strains MCS24T, FWC40T and FWC43T were between 65 and 67 mol%, in accordance with values reported previously for other species of the genus. Moreover, chemotaxonomic data and physiological and biochemical tests allowed the phenotypic differentiation of three novel species within the genus Brevundimonas, for which the names Brevundimonas halotolerans sp. nov. (type strain MCS24T =LMG 25346T =CCUG 58273T), Brevundimonas poindexterae sp. nov. (type strain FWC40T =LMG 25261T =CCUG 57883T) and Brevundimonas staleyi sp. nov. (type strain FWC43T =LMG 25262T =CCUG 57884T) are proposed
