Precision measurements of A^n_1 in the deep inelastic regime

We have performed precision measurements of the double-spin virtual-photon asymmetry A_1 on the neutron in the deep inelastic scattering regime, using an open-geometry, large-acceptance spectrometer and a longitudinally and transversely polarized ^3He target. Our data cover a wide kinematic range 0.277 ā‰¤ x ā‰¤0.548 at an average Q^2 value of 3.078 (GeV/c)^2, doubling the available high-precision neutron data in this x range. We have combined our results with world data on proton targets to make a leading-order extraction of the ratio of polarized-to-unpolarized parton distribution functions for up quarks and for down quarks in the same kinematic range. Our data are consistent with a previous observation of an A_1^n zero crossing near x=0.5. We find no evidence of a transition to a positive slope in (Ī”d+Ī”d)/(d+d) up to x=0.548x=0.548

Experimental neutrino physics in a nuclear landscape

There are profound connections between neutrino physics and nuclear experiments. Exceptionally precise measurements of single and double beta-decay spectra illuminate the scale and nature of neutrino mass and may finally answer the question of whether neutrinos are their own antimatter counterparts. Neutrino-nucleus scattering underpins oscillation experiments and probes nuclear structure, neutrinos offer a rare vantage point into collapsing stars and nuclear fission reactors, and techniques pioneered in neutrino nuclear-physics experiments are advancing quantum-sensing technologies. In this article, we review current and planned efforts at the intersection of neutrino and nuclear experiments.Comment: 22 pages, 4 figures, 1 table. The effect of the STEM approach with the formative assessment in PBL on students' problem solving skills on fluid static topic

The use of problem-based learning with STEM and formative assessment (PBL-STEM-FA) to overcome the weakness in studentsā€™ problem solving skills (PSS) is still limited. This research investigates the effect of PBL-STEM-FA in students' PSS in the topic of fluid static. This research uses the pretest-posttest non-equivalent group design, and involves the research subject of class XI high school students in Malang, Indonesia. Experiment classā€™ students make engineering products in the form of miniature boats. The PSS test instrument with 0.799 reliability were used in this study. The data were analyzed by independent t-test, Hake-gain, and Cohen-effect. The results showed that students of PBL-STEM-FA class had significantly higher PSS and N-gain than students of PBL class. The highest raise occurred in the Useful Description indicator and hydrostatic pressure subtopic for the Experiment class; and Useful Description indicator and surface tension subtopic for Comparison class. But, the two classes had the same lowest raise, namely in the Mathematical Procedures indicator and capillaries subtopic. The effect size at 0.651-medium category implies that the implementation of PBL-STEM-FA is recommended to be carried out in the field to increase studentsā€™ PSS. It is recommended that future studies add an ā€œArtā€ aspect to the STEM approach

Private Outsourcing of Polynomial Evaluation and Matrix Multiplication using Multilinear Maps

{\em Verifiable computation} (VC) allows a computationally weak client to outsource the evaluation of a function on many inputs to a powerful but untrusted server. The client invests a large amount of off-line computation and gives an encoding of its function to the server. The server returns both an evaluation of the function on the client's input and a proof such that the client can verify the evaluation using substantially less effort than doing the evaluation on its own. We consider how to privately outsource computations using {\em privacy preserving} VC schemes whose executions reveal no information on the client's input or function to the server. We construct VC schemes with {\em input privacy} for univariate polynomial evaluation and matrix multiplication and then extend them such that the {\em function privacy} is also achieved. Our tool is the recently developed {mutilinear maps}. The proposed VC schemes can be used in outsourcing {private information retrieval (PIR)}.Comment: 23 pages, A preliminary version appears in the 12th International Conference on Cryptology and Network Security (CANS 2013
