Fiber-coupled erbium microlasers on a chip
An erbium-doped, toroid-shaped microlaser fabricated on a silicon chip is described and characterized. Erbium-doped sol-gel films are applied to the surface of a silica toroidal microresonator to create the microcavity lasers. Highly confined whispering gallery modes make possible single-mode and ultralow threshold microlasers
Genetic algorithm and neural network hybrid approach for job-shop scheduling
Copyright @ 1998 ACTA PressThis paper proposes a genetic algorithm (GA) and constraint satisfaction adaptive neural network (CSANN) hybrid approach for job-shop scheduling problems. In the hybrid approach, GA is used to iterate for searching optimal solutions, CSANN is used to obtain feasible solutions during the iteration of genetic algorithm. Simulations have shown the valid performance of the proposed hybrid approach for job-shop scheduling with respect to the quality of solutions and the speed of calculation. This research is supported by the National Nature Science Foundation and National High

Single/Few Bunch Space Charge Effects at 8-GeV in the Fermilab Main Injector
For Project X, it is planned to inject a beam of 3x10**11 particles per bunch
into the Main Injector. Therefore, at 8-GeV, there will be increased space
charge tune shifts and an increased incoherent tune spread. In preparation for
these higher intensity bunches exploratory studies have commenced looking at
the transmission of different intensity bunches at different tunes. An
experiment is described with results for bunch intensities between 20 and 300
10**9 particles. To achieve the highest intensity bunches coalescing at 8-GeV
is required, resulting in a longer bunch length. Comparisons show that similar
transmission curves are obtained when the intensity and bunch length have
increased by factors of 3.2 and 3.4 respectively, indicating the incoherent
tune shifts are similar, as expected from theory. The results of these
experiments will be used in conjugation with simulations to further study high
intensity bunches in the Main Injector.Comment: 3 pp. 3rd International Particle Accelerator Conference (IPAC 2012)

Quantum Phase Transitions beyond the Landau's Paradigm in Sp(4) Spin System
We propose quantum phase transitions beyond the Landau's paradigm of Sp(4)
spin Heisenberg models on the triangular and square lattices, motivated by the
exact Sp(4) SO(5) symmetry of spin-3/2 fermionic cold atomic system
with only wave scattering. On the triangular lattice, we study a phase
transition between the spin ordered phase and a
spin liquid phase, this phase transition is described by an O(8) sigma model in
terms of fractionalized spinon fields, with significant anomalous scaling
dimensions of spin order parameters. On the square lattice, we propose a
deconfined critical point between the Neel order and the VBS order, which is
described by the CP(3) model, and the monopole effect of the compact U(1) gauge
field is expected to be suppressed at the critical point.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure
Polarity-dependent dielectric torque in nematic liquid crystals
The dielectric dispersion in the uniaxial nematic liquid crystals affects the
switching dynamics of the director, as the dielectric torque is determined by
not only the present values of the electric field and director but also by
their past values. We demonstrate that this dielectric memory leads to an
unusual contribution to the dielectric torque that is linear in the present
field and thus polarity-sensitive. This torque can be used to accelerate the
switch-off phase of director dynamics.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figure
Subacute Sclerosing Panencephalitis of the Brainstem as a Clinical Entity.
Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) is a rare progressive neurological disorder of early adolescence caused by persistent infection of the measles virus, which remains prevalent worldwide despite an effective vaccine. SSPE is a devastating disease with a characteristic clinical course in subcortical white matter; however, atypical presentations of brainstem involvement may be seen in rare cases. This review summarizes reports to date on brainstem involvement in SSPE, including the clinical course of disease, neuroimaging presentations, and guidelines for treatment. A comprehensive literature search was performed for English-language publications with keywords "subacute sclerosing panencephalitis" and "brainstem" using the National Library of Medicine PubMed database (March 1981-September 2017). Eleven articles focusing on SSPE of the brainstem were included. Predominant brainstem involvement remains uncharacteristic of SSPE, which may lead to misdiagnosis and poor outcome. A number of case reports have demonstrated brainstem involvement associated with other intracranial lesions commonly presenting in later SSPE stages (III and IV). However, brainstem lesions can appear in all stages, independent of higher cortical structures. The varied clinical presentations complicate diagnosis from a neuroimaging perspective. SSPE of the brainstem is a rare but important clinical entity. It may present like canonical SSPE or with unique clinical features such as absence seizures and pronounced ataxia. While SSPE generally progresses to the brainstem, it can also begin with a primary focus of infection in the brainstem. Awareness of varied SSPE presentations can aid in early diagnosis as well as guide management and treatment
