    Influences of magnetic coupling process on the spectrum of a disk covered by the corona

    Recently, much attention has been paid to the magnetic coupling (MC) process, which is supported by very high emissivity indexes observed in Seyfert 1 galaxy MCG-6-30-15 and GBHC XTE J1650-500. But the rotational energy transferred from a black hole is simply assumed to be radiated away from the surrounding accretion disk in black-body spectrum, which is obviously not consistent with the observed hard power-law X-ray spectra. We intend to introduce corona into the MC model to make it more compatible with the observations. We describe the model and the procedure of a simplified Monte Carlo simulation, compare the output spectra in the cases with and without the MC effects, and discuss the influences of three parameters involved in the MC process on the output spectra. It is shown that the MC process augments radiation fluxes in the UV or X-ray band. The emergent spectrum is affected by the BH spin and magnetic field strength at the BH horizon, while it is almost unaffected by the radial profile of the magnetic field at the disk.     Lamellar phase separation and dynamic competition in La0.23Ca0.77MnO3

    We report the coexistence of lamellar charge-ordered (CO) and charge-disordered (CD) domains, and their dynamical behavior, in La0.23Ca0.77MnO3. Using high resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM), we show that below Tcd~170K a CD-monoclinic phase forms within the established CO-orthorhombic matrix. The CD phase has a sheet-like morphology, perpendicular to the q vector of the CO superlattice (a axis of the Pnma structure). For temperatures between 64K and 130K, both the TEM and resistivity experiments show a dynamic competition between the two phases: at constant T, the CD phase slowly advances over the CO one. This slow dynamics appears to be linked to the magnetic transitions occurring in this compound, suggesting important magnetoelastic effects.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    We report the first investigation of the piezoelectric response on a nanoscale in the poled ferroelectric crystals with engineered configuration of domains. Piezoresponse force microscopy of tetragonal 0.63PMN-0.37PT relaxor-based ferroelectric crystals reviled that the d33 piezoelectric coefficient is significantly reduced within the distance of about 1 um from the uncharged engineered domain wall. This finding is essential for understanding the mechanisms of the giant piezoresponse in relaxor-based crystals and for designing new piezoelectric materials

    Detecting Majorana fermions by use of superconductor-quantum Hall liquid junctions

    The point contact tunnel junctions between a one-dimensional topological superconductor and single-channel quantum Hall (QH) liquids are investigated theoretically with bosonization technology and renormalization group methods. For the ν=1\nu=1 integer QH liquid, the universal low-energy tunneling transport is governed by the perfect Andreev reflection fixed point with quantized zero-bias conductance G(0)=2e2/hG(0)=2e^{2}/h, which can serve as a definitive fingerprint of the existence of a Majorana fermion. For the ν=1/m\nu =1/m Laughlin fractional QH liquids, its transport is governed by the perfect normal reflection fixed point with vanishing zero-bias conductance and bias-dependent conductance G(V)∼Vm−2G(V) \sim V^{m-2}.     Emptying Dirac valleys in bismuth using high magnetic fields

    The Fermi surface of elemental bismuth consists of three small rotationally equivalent electron pockets, offering a valley degree of freedom to charge carriers. A relatively small magnetic field can confine electrons to their lowest Landau level. This is the quantum limit attained in other dilute metals upon application of sufficiently strong magnetic field. Here, we report on the observation of another threshold magnetic field never encountered before in any other solid. Above this field, BemptyB_{\rm{empty}}, one or two valleys become totally empty. Drying up a Fermi sea by magnetic field in the Brillouin zone leads to a manyfold enhancement in electric conductance. We trace the origin of the large drop in magnetoresistance across BemptyB_{\rm{empty}} to transfer of carriers between valleys with highly anisotropic mobilities. The non-interacting picture of electrons with field-dependent mobility explains most results.
