    Considerable progress has been made in designing the Space Shuttle orbiter and defining its subsystems since the development contract was awarded by NASA to Rockwell International in August, 1972. During the past two years, NASA and Rockwell International, Space Division have been engaged in an intensive effort to refine orbiter preliminary design concepts and to translate them into reality. This paper describes the orbiter \u27s configuration and its major subsystems. The general arrangement of the vehicle and its major assemblies are described. Orbiter flight characteristics and mission profiles are summarized. Selected subsystems including structure, thermal protection, propulsion, power, reaction control, orbital maneuvering, environmental control and life support, hydraulics, avionics, and accommodations for crew and payloads are described

    The new HiVIS spectropolarimeter and spectropolarimetric calibration of the AEOS telescope

    We designed, built, and calibrated a new spectropolarimeter for the HiVIS spectrograph (R 12000-49000) on the AEOS telescope. We also did a polarization calibration of the telescope and instrument. We will introduce the design and use of the spectropolarimeter as well as a new data reduction package we have developed, then discuss the polarization calibration of the spectropolarimeter and the AEOS telescope. We used observations of unpolarized standard stars at many pointings to measure the telescope induced polarization and compare it with a Zemax model. The telescope induces polarization of 1-6% with a strong variation with wavelength and pointing, consistent with the altitude and azimuth variation expected. We then used scattered sunlight as a linearly polarized source to measure the telescopes spectropolarimetric response to linearly polarized light. We then made an all-sky map of the telescope's polarization response to calibrate future spectropolarimetry.Comment: PASP 118, June 200

    Areas of metabolomic exploration for helminth infections

    Helminths represent a diverse category of parasitic organisms that can thrive within a host for years, if not decades, in the absence of treatment. As such, they must establish mechanisms to subsist off their hosts, evade the immune system, and develop a niche among the other cohabiting microbial communities. The complex interplay of biologically small molecules (collectively known as the metabolome) derived from, utilized by, or in response to the presence of helminths within a host is an emerging field of study. In this Perspective, we briefly summarize the current existing literature, categorize key host-pathogen-microbiome interfaces that could be studied in the context of the metabolome, and provide background on mass spectrometry-based metabolomic methodology. Overall, we hope to provide a comprehensive guide for utilizing metabolomics in the context of helminthic disease
