    Chemical and forensic analysis of JFK assassination bullet lots: Is a second shooter possible?

    The assassination of President John Fitzgerald Kennedy (JFK) traumatized the nation. In this paper we show that evidence used to rule out a second assassin is fundamentally flawed. This paper discusses new compositional analyses of bullets reportedly to have been derived from the same batch as those used in the assassination. The new analyses show that the bullet fragments involved in the assassination are not nearly as rare as previously reported. In particular, the new test results are compared to key bullet composition testimony presented before the House Select Committee on Assassinations (HSCA). Matches of bullets within the same box of bullets are shown to be much more likely than indicated in the House Select Committee on Assassinations' testimony. Additionally, we show that one of the ten test bullets is considered a match to one or more assassination fragments. This finding means that the bullet fragments from the assassination that match could have come from three or more separate bullets. Finally, this paper presents a case for reanalyzing the assassination bullet fragments and conducting the necessary supporting scientific studies. These analyses will shed light on whether the five bullet fragments constitute three or more separate bullets.     Too Much, Too Little: Religion in the Public Schools

    The current state of religion in the nation\u27s public schools is odd indeed. On the one hand, the courts have consistently held that public school teachers may not lead their students in an organized prayer. Yet on the other hand, most people seem to agree that there is no problem with those same teachers leading their students in the Pledge of Allegiance, an exercise that asks students on a daily basis, not only to explicitly recognize the existence of a single god, but also to link the nation\u27s very identity to that highly contested theological proposition. Likewise, despite the fact that the courts have unanimously rejected attempts by state and local educational authorities to alter their science curricula to achieve religious purposes, school boards around the country continue to take constitutionally questionable steps to undermine the presentation of evolution, perhaps the most central and robust theory in all of biology. Even where school boards fail to take explicit steps to curtail the teaching of evolution, reports suggest that science teachers self-censor and teach less evolution (if any) than they should. Finally, although it is often said that schools should teach their students the knowledge and information they need to participate intelligently in the nation\u27s public affairs, these schools often fail to teach students anything at all about religion, despite its obvious importance and prevalence not only within our borders, but around the world as well

    A method for assessing the success and failure of community-level interventions in the presence of network diffusion, social reinforcement, and related social effects

    Prevention and intervention work done within community settings often face unique analytic challenges for rigorous evaluations. Since community prevention work (often geographically isolated) cannot be controlled in the same way other prevention programs and these communities have an increased level of interpersonal interactions, rigorous evaluations are needed. Even when the `gold standard' randomized control trials are implemented within community intervention work, the threats to internal validity can be called into question given informal social spread of information in closed network settings. A new prevention evaluation method is presented here to disentangle the social influences assumed to influence prevention effects within communities. We formally introduce the method and it's utility for a suicide prevention program implemented in several Alaska Native villages. The results show promise to explore eight sociological measures of intervention effects in the face of social diffusion, social reinforcement, and direct treatment.
