    Recent Dissertations on Service and Service-Learning Topics: Volume II

    This is the second edition of the Learn and Serve America National Service-Learning Clearinghouse review of dissertations on service, service-learning, and related topics. In the first edition we identified approximately 110 studies, limiting the search to studies conducted from 1990 to the present. In this volume we provide information and abstracts on more than 200 studies- and expand the time they were produced to periods prior to 1990. Some date as early as the 1970s. The goals for doing this literature review are many. First, we want to continue to dispel the notion (as mentioned in the first version) that there is little research on service and service-learning. Second, we wanted to focus on dissertation studies, because they tend to identify the most current subjects and interests of graduate students (and programs) throughout the country on topics related to education. If service-learning is ever to become a mainstream topic in educational circles, then clearly there needs to be widespread interest in graduate schools to study service as a viable and important topic . Third, we sought information about who was actually conducting these studies and who on these campuses was sponsoring such works. Our interest in identifying authors and sponsors was to create an information system that could be used to connect these researchers so they might work collaboratively to improve the quality of knowledge and research on service-learning. Our final goal is to encourage others who are doing research on service-learning and related topics to review this document so they can add known studies that are not included in the current database. By working together, we can hopefully develop the most extensive and accurate information piece on dissertations conducted on or about service-learning

    Offshore Distances of Bowhead Whales (Balaena mysticetus) Observed during Fall in the Beaufort Sea, 1982–2000: An Alternative Interpretation

    Nineteen years (1982– 2000) of sighting data from fall aerial surveys of bowhead whales (Balaena mysticetus) in the Alaskan Beaufort Sea were analyzed to determine how patterns in the distribution of migrating bowhead whales relate to annual sea-ice conditions. Transect sighting rate (transect sightings/km) indicated (ANOVA; F2, 980 = 143.84, p < 0.0001) that bowhead whales occurred farther offshore in years of heavy ice conditions (73.4 km, 95% CL: 67.2–79.6 km) than in years of moderate (49.3 km, 95% CL: 44.8–53.84 km), or light (31.2 km, 95% CL: 30.0–32.4 km) ice conditions. The most plausible explanation for the observed pattern in bowhead whale distribution is that in years of heavy ice conditions (annual pack ice; 1983, 1988, 1991), the developing landfast ice limits availability of shallow nearshore habitat, thus necessitating use of leads and ice openings in deeper water. We acknowledge that factors such as bathymetry, ocean currents, transport, and food availability may also interact to influence autumn distribution of bowhead whales. In heavy ice years, however, these factors likely exert less influence on bowhead whale distribution than in years with light to moderate ice conditions.Les données automnales prélevées à partir de relevés aériens pendant 19 années chez les baleines boréales (1982– 2000) (Balaena mysticetus) de la mer de Beaufort alaskienne ont été analysées dans le but de déterminer comment les tendances caractérisant la répartition des baleines boréales en migration se rapportent à l’état annuel des glaces et de la mer. Le taux de repérage transect (repérage transect/km) a indiqué (ANOVA; F2, 980 = 143.84, p < 0,0001) que les baleines boréales se trouvaient plus loin au large pendant les années où il y avait beaucoup de glace (73,4 km, 95 % CL: 67,2–79,6 km) que pendant les années où la glace était modérée (49,3 km, 95 % CL: 44,8–53.84 km) ou légère (31,2 km, 95 % CL: 30,0–32,4 km). L’explication la plus plausible à la source de la tendance qui a été observée en matière de répartition des baleines boréales, c’est que pendant les années où il y a beaucoup de glace (banquise; 1983, 1988, 1991), la glace de rive en formation limite la disponibilité d’habitats de faible profondeur à proximité du littoral, ce qui nécessite l’utilisation de chenaux et d’ouvertures dans la glace en eau plus profonde.     Adaptive Dispersion Compensation for Remote Fiber Delivery of NIR Femtosecond Pulses

    We report on remote delivery of 25 pJ broadband near-infrared femtosecond light pulses from a Ti:sapphire laser through 150 meters of single-mode optical fiber. Pulse distortion due to dispersion is overcome with pre-compensation using adaptive pulse shaping techniques, while nonlinearities are mitigated using an SF10 rod for the final stage of pulse compression. Near transform limited pulse duration of 130 fs is measured after the final compression.Comment: 3 pages, 4 figure

    Rumor has it that there is very little research on service and service-leaming. A brief literature review of dissertations from 1990 onward revealed that over 110 studies have been completed on service and related topics. So much for the rumor! Our intent in performing this literature review is to identify academic studies that have been completed in the past several years on issues related to service-learning. Covering a variety of interest areas and related topics, the National Service-Learning Clearinghouse is initially interested in identifying studies that add to the knowledge base on service-learning. The collection of titles, authors, and abstract summaries presented here is designed simply to inform the field of the number and diversity of studies available. We make no claims about the accuracy, integrity, value or strength of each work. That decision is left to the reader. We provide only information about the studies and where and how they can be obtained. We encourage you to seek out the researchers identified and to contact them for more information about the nature and content of the studies. We anticipate that this compilation will be the first of several volumes on current dissertation work in American universities. We expect in future publications to actually review the material and make critical comments about the value of the contributions to the field of service-learning. We hope that by publishing this work we will encourage others who have completed studies or are designing and implementing dissertation research to contact us and share their projects with the Clearinghouse. We will do our best to make sure this information is circulated among and between service-learning professionals.     Extinctions and Correlations for Uniformly Discrete Point Processes with Pure Point Dynamical Spectra

    The paper investigates how correlations can completely specify a uniformly discrete point process. The setting is that of uniformly discrete point sets in real space for which the corresponding dynamical hull is ergodic. The first result is that all of the essential physical information in such a system is derivable from its nn-point correlations, n=2,3,>...n= 2, 3, >.... If the system is pure point diffractive an upper bound on the number of correlations required can be derived from the cycle structure of a graph formed from the dynamical and Bragg spectra. In particular, if the diffraction has no extinctions, then the 2 and 3 point correlations contain all the relevant information.Comment: 16 page

    Electromechanical instability in suspended carbon nanotubes

    We have theoretically investigated electromechanical properties of freely suspended carbon nanotubes when a current is injected into the tubes using a scanning tunneling microscope. We show that a shuttle-like electromechanical instability can occur if the bias voltage exceeds a dissipation-dependent threshold value. An instability results in large amplitude vibrations of the carbon nanotube bending mode, which modify the current-voltage characteristics of the system

    Quantum Dynamics in Non-equilibrium Strongly Correlated Environments

    We consider a quantum point contact between two Luttinger liquids coupled to a mechanical system (oscillator). For non-vanishing bias, we find an effective oscillator temperature that depends on the Luttinger parameter. A generalized fluctuation-dissipation relation connects the decoherence and dissipation of the oscillator to the current-voltage characteristics of the device. Via a spectral representation, this result is generalized to arbitrary leads in a weak tunneling regime.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur

    Elevated levels of inflammatory cytokines predict survival in idiopathic and familial pulmonary arterial hypertension

    BACKGROUND: Inflammation is a feature of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), and increased circulating levels of cytokines are reported in patients with PAH. However, to date, no information exists on the significance of elevated cytokines or their potential as biomarkers. We sought to determine the levels of a range of cytokines in PAH and to examine their impact on survival and relationship to hemodynamic indexes. METHODS AND RESULTS: We measured levels of serum cytokines (tumor necrosis factor-alpha, interferon-gamma and interleukin-1beta, -2, -4, -5, -6, -8, -10, -12p70, and -13) using ELISAs in idiopathic and heritable PAH patients (n=60). Concurrent clinical data included hemodynamics, 6-minute walk distance, and survival time from sampling to death or transplantation. Healthy volunteers served as control subjects (n=21). PAH patients had significantly higher levels of interleukin-1beta, -2, -4, -6, -8, -10, and -12p70 and tumor necrosis factor-alpha compared with healthy control subjects. Kaplan-Meier analysis showed that levels of interleukin-6, 8, 10, and 12p70 predicted survival in patients. For example, 5-year survival with interleukin-6 levels of >9 pg/mL was 30% compared with 63% for patients with levels < or = 9 pg/mL (P=0.008). In this PAH cohort, cytokine levels were superior to traditional markers of prognosis such as 6-minute walk distance and hemodynamics. CONCLUSIONS: This study illustrates dysregulation of a broad range of inflammatory mediators in idiopathic and familial PAH and demonstrates that cytokine levels have a previously unrecognized impact on patient survival. They may prove to be useful biomarkers and provide insight into the contribution of inflammation in PAH
