Effect of Coriaria arborea on seed banks during primary succession on Mt Tarawera, New Zealand
An experiment was conducted over two years to investigate the effect of Coriaria arborea, a native nitrogen-fixing shrub, on soil seed banks at sites representing a post-volcanic successional sequence on Mt Tarawera, New Zealand. The sites ranged from bare volcanic ash and lapilli substrate, through low-growing pre-Coriaria vegetation, to dense stands of Coriaria scrub. Soils (to a depth of 50 mm) under recently established Coriaria and older stands had more seedlings (1096 and 1585 seedlings 0.4 m-2, respectively) and species (37 and 45 species 0.4 m-2, respectively) emerge than where there was no Coriaria (243-320 seedlings 0.4 m-2, 14-25 species 0.4 m-2) and were the only soils with Coriaria seedlings. In total, 3488 seedlings representing 63 taxa were recorded. Seeds were still germinating after 24 months but rates declined markedly in the second year. For example, Coriaria reached a germination peak at 8 weeks but continued to germinate sporadically over the 2-year period. Tree species present in young forest within 0.5 km of the sites were absent. Establishment of Coriaria greatly accelerated an underlying trend of gradually increasing abundance and diversity of seeds in the soil with vegetation age. Adventive, wind-dispersed, and annual species were over-represented in the seed banks compared with the regional evergreen forest-dominated flora. These proportions are expected to decline as succession to forest gradually occurs

Efficient preconditioning of the linearized Navier-Stokes equations
We outline a new class of robust and efficient methods for solving subproblems that arise in the linearization and operator splitting of Navier-Stokes equations. We describe a very general strategy for preconditioning that has two basic building blocks; a multigrid V-cycle for the scaler convection-diffusion operator, and a multigrid V-cycle for a pressure Poisson operator. We present numerical experiments illustrating that a simple implementation of our approach leads to an effective and robust solver strategy in that the convergence rate is independent of the grid, robust with respect to the time step, and only deteriorates very slowly as the Reynolds number is increased
Nitrogenase activity associated with codium species from New Zealand marine habitats
Nitrogenase activity, measured as acetylene reduction, was recorded at rates up to 1028 nmol.h \g * dry weight for Codium adhaerens (Cabr.) Ag. var. convolutum Dellow and Codium fragile (Sur.) Hariot subsp. tomentosoides (Van Goor) Silva collected from New Zealand habitats. In both species the ability to reduce acetylene is invariably associated with the presence of a heterocystous blue-green alga, Calothrix sp., epiphytic or embedded in the Codium thallus. A highly significant (P < 0.001) correlation between heterocyst frequency and nitrogenase activity was found. Nitrogenase and net photosynthesis of the Codium-Calothrix system have different steady-state responses to light intensity, and the kinetics of the two processes also differ in that nitrogenase is slow to respond to illumination or darkening. Glucose additions to Codium did not significantly increase nitrogenase activity. Nitrogenase is relatively insensitive to oxygen tension over the range 0-1.0 atm (0-1.033 kgf.cnT2) and still occurs at 1.5 atm (1.55 kgf.cm"2); this condition is unique in all nitrogenase systems thus far reported. Collectively these facts suggest that Calothrix is the agent primarily responsible for nitrogenase activity in these Codium species
Half-life of the electron-capture decay of 97Ru: Precision measurement shows no temperature dependence
We have measured the half-life of the electron-capture (ec) decay of 97Ru in
a metallic environment, both at low temperature (19K), and also at room
temperature. We find the half-lives at both temperatures to be the same within
0.1%. This demonstrates that a recent claim that the ec decay half-life for 7Be
changes by $0.9% +/- 0.2% under similar circumstances certainly cannot be
generalized to other ec decays. Our results for the half-life of 97Ru,
2.8370(14)d at room temperature and 2.8382(14)d at 19K, are consistent with,
but much more precise than, previous room-temperature measurements. In
addition, we have also measured the half-lives of the beta-emitters 103Ru and
105Rh at both temperatures, and found them also to be unchanged.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figure
Revisiting the Rigidly Rotating Magnetosphere model for Ori E - II. Magnetic Doppler imaging, arbitrary field RRM, and light variability
The initial success of the Rigidly Rotating Magnetosphere (RRM) model
application to the B2Vp star sigma OriE by Townsend, Owocki & Groote (2005)
triggered a renewed era of observational monitoring of this archetypal object.
We utilize high-resolution spectropolarimetry and the magnetic Doppler imaging
(MDI) technique to simultaneously determine the magnetic configuration, which
is predominately dipolar, with a polar strength Bd = 7.3-7.8 kG and a smaller
non-axisymmetric quadrupolar contribution, as well as the surface distribution
of abundance of He, Fe, C, and Si. We describe a revised RRM model that now
accepts an arbitrary surface magnetic field configuration, with the field
topology from the MDI models used as input. The resulting synthetic Ha emission
and broadband photometric observations generally agree with observations,
however, several features are poorly fit. To explore the possibility of a
photospheric contribution to the observed photometric variability, the MDI
abundance maps were used to compute a synthetic photospheric light curve to
determine the effect of the surface inhomogeneities. Including the computed
photospheric brightness modulation fails to improve the agreement between the
observed and computed photometry. We conclude that the discrepancies cannot be
explained as an effect of inhomogeneous surface abundance. Analysis of the UV
light variability shows good agreement between observed variability and
computed light curves, supporting the accuracy of the photospheric light
variation calculation. We thus conclude that significant additional physics is
necessary for the RRM model to acceptably reproduce observations of not only
sigma Ori E, but also other similar stars with significant stellar
wind-magnetic field interactions.Comment: 16 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA
