Should I give kids money? The role of pocket money on at-risk behaviors in Italian adolescents
Background. Discussion on the impact of pocket money on positive behaviors is still debated. Objective. To investigate the effect of diverse money allowance schemes on risky behaviors (smoking, alcohol, binge drinking, drug use, gambling) during adolescence. Method. 989 students aged 15 from Lombardy (Italy) reported information on money availability in the 2018 wave of the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children study. To analyze the relationship between money availability and risky behaviors we computed odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals through unconditional multiple logistic regression models. Results. Spending more than 10€ weekly was associated with higher likelihood to smoke, binge drink or gamble. Receiving pocket money (rather than receiving money upon request) was related to higher likelihood to engage in risky behaviors. Conclusions. Pocket money may have a negative impact on adolescents, particularly with a substantial amount of money. More research is needed to understand why providing money only if needed may serve as a protective factor against risky behaviors

GlucoMen Day Continuous Glucose Monitoring System: A Screening for Enzymatic and Electrochemical Interferents
Background: While most of the common drugs with the potential to interfere with continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) systems are accessible over the counter and can be assumed by CGM patients without medical supervision, many other chemicals are frequently used to treat critically ill patients. Continuous glucose monitoring reading accuracy may also be compromised in patients characterized by abnormally high concentrations of physiological interferents. In this article, 22 species selected from endogenous and exogenous chemicals were screened as possible interferents of GlucoMen®Day (GMD), the new microdialysis-based CGM system from A. Menarini Diagnostics. Method: Interference testing was performed according to the EP7-A2 guideline (Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute 2005). Interference was evaluated at two levels of glucose, with each interferent additionally tested at two concentrations. Furthermore, two configurations of the GMD disposable sensor kit-one designed for subcutaneous application, the other for direct intravascular CGM-were challenged with interferent-spiked serum and blood samples, respectively. Results: With the exception of dopamine (however, at very high, nonphysiological concentrations), no interference was observed for all the tested substances. Interestingly, none of the common electrochemical interferents (including ascorbic acid, acetaminophen, and salicylic acid, which represent the major specificity issue for the competing CGM systems) significantly affected the system's output. Conclusions: These results provide clear insights into the advantages offered by the use of a microdialysis-based CGM system that additionally relies on the detection of hydrogen peroxide at low operating potential. GlucoMen Day may become the CGM system of choice for those patients who require either regular administration of drugs or their glycemia to be tightly controlled in the intensive care unit or similar environments

Three-Tesla magnetic resonance imaging of the vestibular endolymphatic space : a systematic qualitative description in healthy ears
Background and Purpose: A detailed knowledge of the normal Magnetic Resonance (MR) anatomy of the vestibular endolymphatic space (ES) could be useful to understand the linkage between endolymphatic hydrops (EH) and M\ue9ni\ue8re's disease (MD). Our aim was to describe the MR anatomy of the vestibular ES as depicted by MR imaging in healthy ears. Methods: This report describes a single-center retrospective study. Three readers analyzed the healthy ears of 22 consecutive patients who had undergone MRI for unilateral sudden hearing loss. The readers described the vestibular ES based on a delayed post-contrast 3D-FLAIR sequence according to six well-defined planes, three oblique sagittal (lateral, intermediate and medial) planes and three axial (superior, intermediate and inferior) planes. Results: On sagittal lateral and intermediate planes, we identified the SSC ampulla combined with the utricle in 22/22 ears. On the sagittal medial plane, the saccule was detectable in 15/22 (68%) ears, having a club shape with the long axis oriented cranio-caudally; in 7/22 (32%) ears, the saccule presented an oval/round shape that appeared more conspicuously on the axial intermediate plane. The ES occupied the half superior portion of the vestibule in 22/22 ears, never contacting the round and oval windows. On the axial plane, in 17/22 cases, the ES showed a Y-shaped arrangement, while in 5/22 ears (23%), the ES presented a more globular shape. Conclusion: MR imaging represents a valid tool to explore the in vivo anatomy of the vestibular ES and to highlight its variability in normal ears
