Plasma waves near Saturn: Initial results from Voyager 1
The Voyager 1 encounter with Saturn provided the first opportunity to investigate plasma wave interactions in the magnetosphere of Saturn. An overview of the principal results from the Voyager 1 plasma wave instrument is presented starting with the initial detection of Saturn and ending about four weeks after closest approach. A survey plot of the electric field intensities detected during the Saturn encounter is shown starting shortly before the inbound shock crossing and ending shortly after the outbound magnetopause crossing. Many intense waves were observed in the vicinity of Saturn. To provide a framework for presenting the observations, the results are discussed more or less according to the sequence in which the data were obtained

Separable and Low-Rank Continuous Games
In this paper, we study nonzero-sum separable games, which are continuous
games whose payoffs take a sum-of-products form. Included in this subclass are
all finite games and polynomial games. We investigate the structure of
equilibria in separable games. We show that these games admit finitely
supported Nash equilibria. Motivated by the bounds on the supports of mixed
equilibria in two-player finite games in terms of the ranks of the payoff
matrices, we define the notion of the rank of an n-player continuous game and
use this to provide bounds on the cardinality of the support of equilibrium
strategies. We present a general characterization theorem that states that a
continuous game has finite rank if and only if it is separable. Using our rank
results, we present an efficient algorithm for computing approximate equilibria
of two-player separable games with fixed strategy spaces in time polynomial in
the rank of the game
Comparing league formats with respect to match importance in Belgian football
Recently, most clubs in the highest Belgian football division have become convinced that the format of their league should be changed. Moreover, the TV station that broadcasts the league is pleading for a more attractive competition. However, the clubs have not been able to agree on a new league format, mainly because they have conflicting interests. In this paper, we compare the current league format, and three other formats that have been considered by the Royal Belgian Football Association. We simulate the course of each of these league formats, based on historical match results. We assume that the attractiveness of a format is determined by the importance of its games; our importance measure for a game is based on the number of teams for which this game can be decisive to reach a given goal. Furthermore, we provide an overview of how each league format aligns with the expectations and interests of each type of club
Group Theory Approach to Band Structure: Scarf and Lame Hamiltonians
The group theoretical treatment of bound and scattering state problems is
extended to include band structure. We show that one can realize Hamiltonians
with periodic potentials as dynamical symmetries, where representation theory
provides analytic solutions, or which can be treated with more general spectrum
generating algebraic methods. We find dynamical symmetries for which we derive
the transfer matrices and dispersion relations. Both compact and non-compact

On renormalizability of the massless Thirring model
We discuss the renormalizability of the massless Thirring model in terms of
the causal fermion Green functions and correlation functions of left-right
fermion densities. We obtain the most general expressions for the causal
two-point Green function and correlation function of left-right fermion
densities with dynamical dimensions of fermion fields, parameterised by two
parameters. The region of variation of these parameters is constrained by the
positive definiteness of the norms of the wave functions of the states related
to components of the fermion vector current. We show that the dynamical
dimensions of fermion fields calculated for causal Green functions and
correlation functions of left-right fermion densities can be made equal. This
implies the renormalizability of the massless Thirring model in the sense that
the ultra-violet cut-off dependence, appearing in the causal fermion Green
functions and correlation functions of left-right fermion densities, can be
removed by renormalization of the wave function of the massless Thirring

Massless Metric Preheating
Can super-Hubble metric perturbations be amplified exponentially during
preheating ? Yes. An analytical existence proof is provided by exploiting the
conformal properties of massless inflationary models. The traditional conserved
quantity \zeta is non-conserved in many regions of parameter space. We include
backreaction through the homogeneous parts of the inflaton and preheating
fields and discuss the role of initial conditions on the post-preheating
power-spectrum. Maximum field variances are strongly underestimated if metric
perturbations are ignored. We illustrate this in the case of strong
self-interaction of the decay products. Without metric perturbations,
preheating in this case is very inefficient. However, metric perturbations
increase the maximum field variances and give alternative channels for the
resonance to proceed. This implies that metric perturbations can have a large
impact on calculations of relic abundances of particles produced during

The Strategic Exploitation of Limited Information and Opportunity in Networked Markets
This paper studies the effect of constraining interactions within a market. A model is analysed in which boundedly rational agents trade with and gather information from their neighbours within a trade network. It is demonstrated that a trader’s ability to profit and to identify the equilibrium price is positively correlated with its degree of connectivity within the market. Where traders differ in their number of potential trading partners, well-connected traders are found to benefit from aggressive trading behaviour.Where information propagation is constrained by the topology of the trade network, connectedness affects the nature of the strategies employed
WARNING: Physics Envy May Be Hazardous To Your Wealth!
The quantitative aspirations of economists and financial analysts have for
many years been based on the belief that it should be possible to build models
of economic systems - and financial markets in particular - that are as
predictive as those in physics. While this perspective has led to a number of
important breakthroughs in economics, "physics envy" has also created a false
sense of mathematical precision in some cases. We speculate on the origins of
physics envy, and then describe an alternate perspective of economic behavior
based on a new taxonomy of uncertainty. We illustrate the relevance of this
taxonomy with two concrete examples: the classical harmonic oscillator with
some new twists that make physics look more like economics, and a quantitative
equity market-neutral strategy. We conclude by offering a new interpretation of
tail events, proposing an "uncertainty checklist" with which our taxonomy can
be implemented, and considering the role that quants played in the current

Australian women's experiences of wearing a non-invasive fetal electrocardiography (NIFECG) device during labour.
BACKGROUND: Continuous electronic fetal monitoring devices can restrict women's freedom of movement and choice of positioning during labour and birth. Despite the use of continuous electronic fetal monitoring for the past 50 years, little attention has been paid to women's experiences of wearing different fetal monitoring devices in labour. AIM: To explore women's views and experiences of wearing a beltless continuous electronic fetal monitoring device, the non-invasive fetal electrocardiogram during labour. METHODS: A qualitative descriptive approach was taken. Recruitment was via a larger clinical feasibility study. Some women who consented to take part in the clinical feasibility study also consented to being interviewed during the postnatal period. Transcripts were thematically analysed. FINDINGS: Women reported improved comfort when wearing the non-invasive fetal electrocardiogram device. They appreciated how it enabled freedom of movement and an ability to actively participate in labour. They compared their experience with previous use of cardiotocography which they felt compromised their bodily autonomy. All forms of continuous electronic fetal monitoring experienced by women resulted in the unwelcome experience of 'Poking and prodding' by the midwife. DISCUSSION: Continuous electronic fetal monitoring can negatively impact women's labour and birth experience, particularly when the measurement of fetal wellbeing is prioritised. CONCLUSION: The way in which continuous electronic fetal monitoring technology is designed and used is an important component of optimising physiological processes and positive experiences for women during labour and birth for women with complex pregnancies.
