    Heat transfer and pressure distributions at M equals 8 on 0.029 scale models of the Viking entry vehicle

    An investigation in the Langley Research Center Mach-8 Variable Density Hypersonic Tunnel was made of the pressure distributions and heat transfer rate distributions on two 0.029 scale Viking Entry Vehicle models. Comparable ranges of test Reynolds number were exercised for the two tests between run conditions around 4 million and conditions of about 1.6 million. At angles of attack less than 20 degrees the pressure ratio distribution referenced to stagnation pressure appeared invariant with Reynolds number. Increasing angle of attack results in a flatter distribution of both the windward and leeward pressure distributions; in addition, the stagnation point shifted into the windward plane. A subsequent rise in the heating rate profile on the leeward side with further increase in angle of attack is attributed to boundary layer natural transition to turbulent flow.     The performance, stability, and control characteristics of various carrier aircraft configurations are presented. Aerodynamic characteristics of the carrier mated with the Orbiter, carrier alone, and Orbiter alone were investigated. Carrier support system tare and interference effects were determined. Six-component force and moment data were recorded for the carrier and Orbiter. Buffet onset characteristics of the carrier vertical tail and horizontal tail were recorded. Angles of attack from -3 deg through 26 deg and angles of slideslip between +12 deg and -12 deg were investigated at Mach numbers from 0.15 through 0.70. Photographs are included

    Preparation for Hollow Cathode Testing for the Advanced Electric Propulsion System at NASA Glenn Research Center

    NASA Glenn Research Center is performing activities to support the unique needs of hollow cathode development and testing for the Advanced Electric Propulsion System (AEPS). Three existing vacuum facilities have been outfitted as cathode test facilities, and each will serve a different role in upcoming testing. Vacuum Facility 67 is being developed to serve as a long-duration test facility for the Engineering Development Unit cathode, which is to be delivered by the AEPS contractor. It will feature a thruster-like magnetic field simulator and cold-cycle capability via a liquid nitrogen-cooled cold plate. Vacuum Facility 17 is being developed as a test facility for short- to medium-duration experiments in order to provide auxiliary support for the long-duration testing. It will feature a magnetic field simulator but not cold-cycling. Finally, Vacuum Facility 1 will be a high-pumping speed cathode development environment, and will feature an array of plasma and temperature diagnostics. In addition to the facility preparation work, a new cathode, referred to as the Mark II, has been designed. The Mark II is an evolution of the Technology Demonstration Unit cathodes that better evokes the geometry, fabrication, and construction of the forthcoming Engineering Development Unit. This cathode serves as a transition between the Technology Demonstration Unit cathodes used during early thruster development and the forthcoming Engineering Development Unit cathodes. It will be used as a means of verifying the new test facilities prior to arrival of Engineering Development Unit hardware.     Connective tissue disease related interstitial lung diseases and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis: provisional core sets of domains and instruments for use in clinical trials

    Rationale Clinical trial design in interstitial lung diseases (ILDs) has been hampered by lack of consensus on appropriate outcome measures for reliably assessing treatment response. In the setting of connective tissue diseases (CTDs), some measures of ILD disease activity and severity may be confounded by non-pulmonary comorbidities. Methods The Connective Tissue Disease associated Interstitial Lung Disease (CTD-ILD) working group of Outcome Measures in Rheumatology—a non-profit international organisation dedicated to consensus methodology in identification of outcome measures—conducted a series of investigations which included a Delphi process including >248 ILD medical experts as well as patient focus groups culminating in a nominal group panel of ILD experts and patients. The goal was to define and develop a consensus on the status of outcome measure candidates for use in randomised controlled trials in CTD-ILD and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). Results A core set comprising specific measures in the domains of lung physiology, lung imaging, survival, dyspnoea, cough and health-related quality of life is proposed as appropriate for consideration for use in a hypothetical 1-year multicentre clinical trial for either CTD-ILD or IPF. As many widely used instruments were found to lack full validation, an agenda for future research is proposed. Conclusion Identification of consensus preliminary domains and instruments to measure them was attained and is a major advance anticipated to facilitate multicentre RCTs in the field
