The starting point of this paper is the idea that the ethnographic film, perceived as a visual expression, shows a certain standpoint about the phenomenon it presents, and enables distinguishing of the layers of meaning that the author, subjects and the viewers attribute to it. By analyzing three films about the Lastovo carnival, the author distinguishes meanings expressed in them, and names them the realities of the carnival: custom-performing reality, ethnologist\u27s reality, television reality and audience reality. By distinguishing the realities from custom-related and film appearance of the Lastovo carnival, the author describes several components of a process: annual custom performances of the Lastovo carnival, films made during those performances, and the impact and interpretation of the audience and performances and films on new custom performances. This rounds up an inseparable entity of carnival events on Lastovo, whose basic characteristic is receiving and transmitting messages in the communication chain that extends through time and media. Analizom triju filmova o lastovskome pokladu autorica u tekstu izdvaja njima iskazana značenja i naziva ih zbiljama poklada: običajno-izvedbenom zbiljom, zbiljom etnologa, televizijskom zbiljom i zbiljom gledateljstva.

In this paper we analyze possible actions of an automorphism of order six on a 22-(70,24,8)(70, 24, 8) design, and give a complete classification for the action of the cyclic automorphism group of order six G=ρZ6Z2×Z3G= \langle \rho \rangle \cong Z_6 \cong Z_2 \times Z_3 where ρ3\rho^3 fixes exactly 1414 points (blocks) and ρ2\rho^2 fixes 44 points (blocks). Up to isomorphism, there are 37183718 such designs. This result significantly increases the number of known 22-(70,24,8)(70,24,8) designs.Comment: 10 page

    Realism’s Understanding of Negative Numbers

    Get PDF
Our topic is the understanding of the nature of negative numbers – the entities to which expressions such as ‘-1’ refer. Following Frege, we view positive whole numbers as providing the answer to the question „how many?“ In this light, how are we to view negative numbers? Both positive and negative numbers can be ordered through the relation of larger or smaller. It is then true of all negative numbers that they are entities which are (somehow) smaller than zero. For many, this has been understood as an ontological paradox: how can something be „less than nothing?“ Some propose to avoid the paradox by treating negative numbers as mere façons de parler. In this paper, we propose a more realist account, taking as our starting point the thesis that there is at least one familiar type of object, the magnitude of which can be expressed with negative numbers, namely, debt. How can the sense of an expression be ontologically paradoxical, yet the expression itself still plausibly refer to a social object such as a debt? Or, put differently, how is it possible to be, at the same time, a realist in financial theory and a nominalist in mathematical theory? The paper first shows that the paradox arises when the two distinct ways in which negative numbers are connected to real objects are run together. The first of the two refers to debt only, whereas the second could refer to debt, as well as to physical objects. Finally, we claim that a debt is at once a specifically social object and part of reality as described by physics

New examples of self-dual near-extremal ternary codes of length 48 derived from 2-(47,23,11) designs

In a recent paper [M. Araya, M. Harada, Some restrictions on the weight enumerators of near-extremal ternary self-dual codes and quaternary Hermitian self-dual codes, Des. Codes Cryptogr., 91 (2023), 1813--1843], Araya and Harada gave examples of self-dual near-extremal ternary codes of length 48 for 145145 distinct values of the number A12A_{12} of codewords of minimum weight 12, and raised the question about the existence of codes for other values of A12A_{12}. In this note, we use symmetric 2-(47,23,11)(47,23,11) designs with an automorphism group of order 6 to construct self-dual near-extremal ternary codes of length 48 for 150150 new values of A12A_{12}.Comment: 7 page

Symmetric 2-(36,15,6) designs with an automorphism of order two

The parameters 2-(36,15,6) are the smallest parameters of symmetric designs for which a complete classification up to isomorphism is yet unknown. Bouyukliev, Fack and Winne classified all 2-(36,15,6)(36,15,6) designs that admit an automorphism of odd prime order, and gave a partial classification of such designs that admit an automorphism of order 2. In this paper, we give the classification of all symmetric 2-(36,15,6)(36,15,6) designs that admit an automorphism of order two. It is shown that there are exactly 15477011 547 701 nonisomorphic such designs, 135779135 779 of which are self-dual designs. The ternary linear codes spanned by the incidence matrices of these designs are computed. Among these codes, there are near-extremal self-dual codes with previously unknown weight distributions.Comment: 20 page

Development of a novel robotic system for hand rehabilitation

    Get PDF
Rehabilitation Robotics involves the use of robotic systems as an enabling technology for people with kinetic problems, in order to help them recover from a physical trauma. This paper presents the investigation of a robotic system for stroke and post hand-surgery patient rehabilitation, in order to gradually regain flexibility in their finger-joints by passively extending and flexing their fingers. It includes one linear actuator for each finger and a thin-film force sensor at each fingertip as a safety measure against overstraining the finger-joints. Prior to designing the system, kinematic and dynamic models of a human hand have been derived and simulated in MATLAB. Data obtained from this model show a strong correlation to natural human hand movements, recorded in this study using a 6 DoF motion capture system. Design of the robotic system is performed using UGS NX6 software. © 2011 IEEE

QSAR MODELING OF ANTIBACTERIAL ACTIVITY OF SOME BENZIMIDAZOLE DERIVATIVES

A quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) study has been carried out for a training set of 12 benzimidazole derivatives to correlate and predict the antibacterial activity of studied compounds against Gram-negative bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Multiple linear regression was used to select the descriptors and to generate the best prediction model that relates the structural features to inhibitory activity. The predictivity of the model was estimated by cross-validation with the leave-one-out method. Our results suggest a QSAR model based on the following descriptors: parameter of lipophilicity (logP) and hydration energy (HE). Good agreement between experimental and predicted inhibitory values, obtained in the validation procedure, indicated the good quality of the generated QSAR model

The plasma concentration of apoB has recently been reported to be the best lipid predictor of coronary heart disease. The possible associations of genetic markers in the apolipoprotein B gene (XbaI, EcoRI, MspI, Ins/Del, and 4311 A/G polymorphisms) were evaluated in patients with ischemic cerebrovascular disease (ICVD) and controls of equivalent BMI. The odds ratio for ICVD in the X+X+ genotype was 2.22, 95% CI 1.24-3.96 (P<0.05), while that for ICVD in the Ins/Ins genotype was 2.82, 95% CI 1.57-5.06 (P<0.05). The patients had significantly higher frequency of the 4311A allele compared to the controls (P<0.01). Our results support the assumption that apoB gene polymorphisms may contribute to the extent of cerebrovascular disease risk
