Renormalization Group Treatment of Nonrenormalizable Interactions
The structure of the UV divergencies in higher dimensional nonrenormalizable
theories is analysed. Based on renormalization operation and renormalization
group theory it is shown that even in this case the leading divergencies
(asymptotics) are governed by the one-loop diagrams the number of which,
however, is infinite. Explicit expression for the one-loop counter term in an
arbitrary D-dimensional quantum field theory without derivatives is suggested.
This allows one to sum up the leading asymptotics which are independent of the
arbitrariness in subtraction of higher order operators. Diagrammatic
calculations in a number of scalar models in higher loops are performed to be
in agreement with the above statements. These results do not support the idea
of the na\"ive power-law running of couplings in nonrenormalizable theories and
fail (with one exception) to reveal any simple closed formula for the leading
terms.Comment: LaTex, 11 page
Non-Relativistic Gravitation: From Newton to Einstein and Back
We present an improvement to the Classical Effective Theory approach to the
non-relativistic or Post-Newtonian approximation of General Relativity. The
"potential metric field" is decomposed through a temporal Kaluza-Klein ansatz
into three NRG-fields: a scalar identified with the Newtonian potential, a
3-vector corresponding to the gravito-magnetic vector potential and a 3-tensor.
The derivation of the Einstein-Infeld-Hoffmann Lagrangian simplifies such that
each term corresponds to a single Feynman diagram providing a clear physical
interpretation. Spin interactions are dominated by the exchange of the
gravito-magnetic field. Leading correction diagrams corresponding to the 3PN
correction to the spin-spin interaction and the 2.5PN correction to the
spin-orbit interaction are presented.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures. v2: published version. v3: Added a computation
of Einstein-Infeld-Hoffmann in higher dimensions within our improved ClEFT

Spin induced multipole moments for the gravitational wave flux from binary inspirals to third Post-Newtonian order
Using effective field theory techniques we calculate the source multipole
moments needed to obtain the spin contributions to the power radiated in
gravitational waves from inspiralling compact binaries to third Post-Newtonian
order (3PN). The multipoles depend linearly and quadratically on the spins and
include both spin(1)spin(2) and spin(1)spin(1) components. The results in this
paper provide the last missing ingredient required to determine the phase
evolution to 3PN including all spin effects which we will report in a separate
paper.Comment: 35 pages, 7 figures. Published versio
The Infrared Counterpart of the Microquasar GRS 1758-258
We present revised infrared (2.2 micron) astrometry of the field containing
the Galactic microquasar GRS 1758-258, using observations at the Keck I 10-m
telescope. We find three candidates for the microquasar within a 3 sigma error
circle, but none within 2 sigma. We show that if the 18.4 day X-ray period of
GRS 1758-258 is due to a binary orbit, then only one of the three candidates,
an early K-type giant, is large enough to power the microquasar via Roche lobe
overflow. We therefore identify this star as the infrared counterpart of GRS
1758-258, which we classify as a low mass X-ray binary. Long term infrared
monitoring of this source should provide further information about the
microquasar system, including a confirmation of the X-ray period and an
estimate of the compact object's mass.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures; accepted for publication in ApJ Letter
Finite size corrections to the radiation reaction force in classical electrodynamics
We introduce an effective field theory approach that describes the motion of
finite size objects under the influence of electromagnetic fields. We prove
that leading order effects due to the finite radius of a spherically
symmetric charge is order rather than order in any physical model, as
widely claimed in the literature. This scaling arises as a consequence of
Poincar\'e and gauge symmetries, which can be shown to exclude linear
corrections. We use the formalism to calculate the leading order finite size
correction to the Abraham-Lorentz-Dirac force.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure

The Federal Rules of Evidence exclude expert scientific testimony when it has been developed without regard for accepted scientific methods.
This case focuses on expert scientific evidence. Such evidence plays a vital and often dispositive role in modern litigation. For scientific evidence to be helpful to the factfinder it must meet some minimal threshold of reliability. To hold otherwise would be to allow a system of adjudication based more on chance than on reason
Matched Asymptotic Expansion for Caged Black Holes - Regularization of the Post-Newtonian Order
The "dialogue of multipoles" matched asymptotic expansion for small black
holes in the presence of compact dimensions is extended to the Post-Newtonian
order for arbitrary dimensions. Divergences are identified and are regularized
through the matching constants, a method valid to all orders and known as
Hadamard's partie finie. It is closely related to "subtraction of
self-interaction" and shows similarities with the regularization of quantum
field theories. The black hole's mass and tension (and the "black hole
Archimedes effect") are obtained explicitly at this order, and a Newtonian
derivation for the leading term in the tension is demonstrated. Implications
for the phase diagram are analyzed, finding agreement with numerical results
and extrapolation shows hints for Sorkin's critical dimension - a dimension
where the transition turns second order.Comment: 28 pages, 5 figures. v2:published versio
Next to leading order spin-orbit effects in the motion of inspiralling compact binaries
Using effective field theory (EFT) techniques we calculate the
next-to-leading order (NLO) spin-orbit contributions to the gravitational
potential of inspiralling compact binaries. We use the covariant spin
supplementarity condition (SSC), and explicitly prove the equivalence with
previous results by Faye et al. in arXiv:gr-qc/0605139. We also show that the
direct application of the Newton-Wigner SSC at the level of the action leads to
the correct dynamics using a canonical (Dirac) algebra. This paper then
completes the calculation of the necessary spin dynamics within the EFT
formalism that will be used in a separate paper to compute the spin
contributions to the energy flux and phase evolution to NLO.Comment: 25 pages, 4 figures, revtex4. v2: minor changes, refs. added. To
