DISTRIBUTIVE CLASS POLITICS AND THE POLITICAL GEOGRAPHY OF INTERWAR EUROPE
Why did socialists win elections in some countries in Europe, and fascists in others, during the interwar period? Many political historians have viewed ''distributive class politics'' as the appropriate characterization of this period and place, but heretofore, formal politico-economic analysis has not been employed to study the question. Here, a new conception of political competition between parties, which yields Nash equilibria when the policy space is multi-dimensional, is harnessed to the task. Each party proposes a class distribution of income, chosen from a (multi-dimensional) issue simplex. The theory, proposed by G. Luebbert, that active class conflict between the landed peasantry and landless laborers was the necessary and sufficient condition of fascist victory is modeled, and is largely, but not conclusively, confirmed.
Time domain modal identification/estimation of the mini-mast testbed
The Mini-Mast is a 20 meter long 3-dimensional, deployable/retractable truss structure designed to imitate future trusses in space. Presented here are results from a robust (with respect to measurement noise sensitivity), time domain, modal identification technique for identifying the modal properties of the Mini-Mast structure even in the face of noisy environments. Three testing/analysis procedures are considered: sinusoidal excitation near resonant frequencies of the Mini-Mast, frequency response function averaging of several modal tests, and random input excitation with a free response period
Axiomatic resource allocation for heterogeneous agents
We analyze a model of resource allocation in which agents' abilities (to transform the resource into an interpersonally comparable outcome) and initial endowments may differ. We impose ethical and operational axioms in this model and characterize some allocation rules as a result of combining these axioms. Two focal (and polar) egalitarian rules are singled out. On the one hand, the rule that allocates the resource equally across agents. On the other hand, the rule tha allocates the resource so that the distribution of final outcomes is exicographically maximized.resource allocation, egalitarianism, priority, solidarity, composition.
Lattice thermal conductivity of graphene nanostructures
Non-equilibrium molecular dynamics is used to investigate the heat current
due to the atomic lattice vibrations in graphene nanoribbons and nanorings
under a thermal gradient. We consider a wide range of temperature, nanoribbon
widths up to 6nm and the effect of moderate edge disorder. We find that narrow
graphene nanorings can efficiently suppress the lattice thermal conductivity at
low temperatures (~100K), as compared to nanoribbons of the same width.
Remarkably, rough edges do not appear to have a large impact on lattice energy
transport through graphene nanorings while nanoribbons seem more affected by
imperfections. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the effects of
hydrogen-saturated edges can be neglected in these graphene nanostructures
Spin noise spectroscopy in GaAs
We observe the noise spectrum of electron spins in bulk GaAs by Faraday
rotation noise spectroscopy. The experimental technique enables the undisturbed
measurement of the electron spin dynamics in semiconductors. We measure
exemplarily the electron spin relaxation time and the electron Lande g-factor
in n-doped GaAs at low temperatures and find good agreement of the measured
noise spectrum with an unpretentious theory based on Poisson distribution

SmartTrack: Efficient Predictive Race Detection
Widely used data race detectors, including the state-of-the-art FastTrack
algorithm, incur performance costs that are acceptable for regular in-house
testing, but miss races detectable from the analyzed execution. Predictive
analyses detect more data races in an analyzed execution than FastTrack
detects, but at significantly higher performance cost.
This paper presents SmartTrack, an algorithm that optimizes predictive race
detection analyses, including two analyses from prior work and a new analysis
introduced in this paper. SmartTrack's algorithm incorporates two main
optimizations: (1) epoch and ownership optimizations from prior work, applied
to predictive analysis for the first time; and (2) novel conflicting critical
section optimizations introduced by this paper. Our evaluation shows that
SmartTrack achieves performance competitive with FastTrack-a qualitative

Classification of scale-free networks
While the emergence of a power law degree distribution in complex networks is
intriguing, the degree exponent is not universal. Here we show that the
betweenness centrality displays a power-law distribution with an exponent \eta
which is robust and use it to classify the scale-free networks. We have
observed two universality classes with \eta \approx 2.2(1) and 2.0,
respectively. Real world networks for the former are the protein interaction
networks, the metabolic networks for eukaryotes and bacteria, and the
co-authorship network, and those for the latter one are the Internet, the
world-wide web, and the metabolic networks for archaea. Distinct features of
the mass-distance relation, generic topology of geodesics and resilience under
attack of the two classes are identified. Various model networks also belong to

Towards an Ontological Modelling of Preference Relations
Preference relations are intensively studied in Economics,
but they are also approached in AI, Knowledge Representation, and
Conceptual Modelling, as they provide a key concept in a variety of
domains of application. In this paper, we propose an ontological foundation
of preference relations to formalise their essential aspects across
domains. Firstly, we shall discuss what is the ontological status of the
relata of a preference relation. Secondly, we investigate the place of preference
relations within a rich taxonomy of relations (e.g. we ask whether
they are internal or external, essential or contingent, descriptive or nondescriptive
relations). Finally, we provide an ontological modelling of
preference relation as a module of a foundational (or upper) ontology
(viz. OntoUML).
