New Structure In The Shapley Supercluster
We present new radial velocities for 189 galaxies in a 91 sq. deg region of
the Shapley supercluster measured with the FLAIR-II spectrograph on the UK
Schmidt Telescope. The data reveal two sheets of galaxies linking the major
concentrations of the supercluster. The supercluster is not flattened in
Declination as was suggested previously and it may be at least 30 percent
larger than previously thought with a correspondingly larger contribution to

Blocked algorithms for the reduction to Hessenberg-triangular form revisited
We present two variants of Moler and Stewart's algorithm for reducing a matrix pair to Hessenberg-triangular (HT) form with increased data locality in the access to the matrices. In one of these variants, a careful reorganization and accumulation of Givens rotations enables the use of efficient level 3 BLAS. Experimental results on four different architectures, representative of current high performance processors, compare the performances of the new variants with those of the implementation of Moler and Stewart's algorithm in subroutine DGGHRD from LAPACK, Dackland and Kågström's two-stage algorithm for the HT form, and a modified version of the latter which requires considerably less flop
Ultrasonic characterization of the pulmonary venous wall: echographic and histological correlation
Background: Pulmonary vein isolation with radiofrequency catheter ablation techniques is used to prevent recurrences of human atrial fibrillation. Visualization of the architecture at the venoatrial junction could be crucial for these ablative techniques. Our study assesses the potential for intravascular ultrasound to provide this information.
Methods and Results: We retrieved 32 pulmonary veins from 8 patients dying from noncardiac causes. We obtained cross-sectional intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) images with a 3.2F, 30-MHz ultrasound catheter at intervals on each vein. Histological cross-sections at the intervals allowed comparisons with ultrasonic images. The pulmonary venous wall at the venoatrial junction revealed a 3-layered ultrasonic pattern. The inner echogenic layer represents both endothelium and connective tissue of the media (mean maximal thickness, 1.4±0.3 mm). The middle hypoechogenic stratum corresponds to the sleeves of left atrial myocardium surrounding the external aspect of the venous media. This layer was thickest at the venoatrial junction (mean maximal thickness, 2.6±0.8 mm) and decreased toward the lung hilum. The outer echodense layer corresponds to fibro-fatty adventitial tissue (mean maximal thickness, 2.15±0.36 mm). We found a close agreement among the IVUS and histological measurements for maximal luminal diameter (mean difference, -0.12±1.3 mm) and maximal muscular thickness (mean difference, 0.17±0.13 mm) using the Bland and Altman method.
Conclusions: Our experimental study demonstrates for the first time that IVUS images of the pulmonary veins can provide information on the distal limits and thickness of the myocardial sleeves and can be a valuable tool to help accurate targeting during ablative procedures
Redshifts in the Southern Abell Redshift Survey Clusters. I. The Data
The Southern Abell Redshift Survey contains 39 clusters of galaxies with
redshifts in the range 0.0 < z < 0.31 and a median redshift depth of z =
0.0845. SARS covers the region 0 21h (while
avoiding the LMC and SMC) with b > 40. Cluster locations were chosen from the
Abell and Abell-Corwin-Olowin catalogs while galaxy positions were selected
from the Automatic Plate Measuring Facility galaxy catalog with
extinction-corrected magnitudes in the range 15 <= b_j < 19. SARS utilized the
Las Campanas 2.5 m duPont telescope, observing either 65 or 128 objects
concurrently over a 1.5 sq deg field. New redshifts for 3440 galaxies are

Main zooplankton groups, chlorophyll A, inorganic nutrients, organic matter,
temperature and pH in water, as well as pH and redox potential in the sediment
have been examined during eighteen months in a traditional farm of the Cádiz
Bay (South Atlantic coast of the Iberian Peninsula). The study aimed in

Light to Mass Variations with Environment
Large and well defined variations exist between the distribution of mass and
the light of stars on extragalactic scales. Mass concentrations in the range
10^12 - 10^13 M_sun manifest the most light per unit mass. Group halos in this
range are typically the hosts of spiral and irregular galaxies with ongoing
star formation. On average M/L_B ~ 90 M_sun/L_sun in these groups . More
massive halos have less light per unit mass. Within a given mass range, halos
that are dynamically old as measured by crossing times and galaxy morphologies
have distinctly less light per unit mass. At the other end of the mass
spectrum, below 10^12 M_sun, there is a cutoff in the manifestation of light.
Group halos in the range 10^11 - 10^12 M_sun can host dwarf galaxies but with
such low luminosities that M/L_B values can range from several hundred to
several thousand. It is suspected that there must be completely dark halos at
lower masses. Given the form of the halo mass function, it is the low relative
luminosities of the high mass halos that has the greatest cosmological
implications. Of order half the clustered mass may reside in halos with greater
than 10^14 M_sun. By contrast, only 5-10% of clustered mass would lie in
