Small linear wind tunnel saltation experiments: Some experiences
Since the wind tunnels proposed to be used for the Space Station Planetology Experiments are of a rather limited size, some experience and techniques used for saltation experiments in a small linear wind tunnel may be of interest. Three experiments will be presented. The first concerns a length effect of saltation mass flux in which the size of the wind tunnel exaggerates the physical process taking place. The second experiment concerns a nonoptical technique that does not interfere with flow and by which momentum flux to the floor may be measured. The technique may also be used to calculate saltation flux (using appropriate assumptions). The third experiment concerns the use of the momentum equation to estimate momentum fluxes by difference

Evaluation of flow quality in two large NASA wind tunnels at transonic speeds
Wind tunnel testing of low drag airfoils and basic transition studies at transonic speeds are designed to provide high quality aerodynamic data at high Reynolds numbers. This requires that the flow quality in facilities used for such research be excellent. To obtain a better understanding of the characteristics of facility disturbances and identification of their sources for possible facility modification, detailed flow quality measurements were made in two prospective NASA wind tunnels. Experimental results are presented of an extensive and systematic flow quality study of the settling chamber, test section, and diffuser in the Langley 8 foot transonic pressure tunnel and the Ames 12 foot pressure wind tunnel. Results indicate that the free stream velocity and pressure fluctuation levels in both facilities are low at subsonic speeds and are so high as to make it difficult to conduct meaningful boundary layer control and transition studies at transonic speeds
MiR-142-3p is downregulated in aggressive p53 mutant mouse models of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma by hypermethylation of its locus
Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is an extremely aggressive disease with poor prognostic implications. This is partly due to a large proportion of PDACs carrying mutations in TP53, which impart gain-of-function characteristics that promote metastasis. There is evidence that microRNAs (miRNAs) may play a role in both gain-of-function TP53 mutations and metastasis, but this has not been fully explored in PDAC. Here we set out to identify miRNAs which are specifically dysregulated in metastatic PDAC. To achieve this, we utilised established mouse models of PDAC to profile miRNA expression in primary tumours expressing the metastasis-inducing mutant p53R172H and compared these to two control models carrying mutations, which promote tumour progression but do not induce metastasis. We show that a subset of miRNAs are dysregulated in mouse PDAC tumour tissues expressing mutant p53R172H, primary cell lines derived from mice with the same mutations and in TP53 null cells with ectopic expression of the orthologous human mutation, p53R175H. Specifically, miR-142-3p is downregulated in all of these experimental models. We found that DNA methyltransferase 1 (Dnmt1) is upregulated in tumour tissue and cell lines, which express p53R172H. Inhibition or depletion of Dnmt1 restores miR-142-3p expression. Overexpression of miR-142-3p attenuates the invasive capacity of p53R172H-expressing tumour cells. MiR-142-3p dysregulation is known to be associated with cancer progression, metastasis and the miRNA is downregulated in patients with PDAC. Here we link TP53 gain-of-function mutations to Dnmt1 expression and in turn miR-142-3p expression. Additionally, we show a correlation between expression of these genes and patient survival, suggesting that they may have potential to be therapeutic targets

Harmonization of space-borne infra-red sensors measuring sea surface temperature
Sea surface temperature (SST) is observed by a constellation of sensors, and SST retrievals
are commonly combined into gridded SST analyses and climate data records (CDRs). Differential
biases between SSTs from different sensors cause errors in such products, including feature artefacts.
We introduce a new method for reducing differential biases across the SST constellation, by reconciling
the brightness temperature (BT) calibration and SST retrieval parameters between sensors. We use the
Advanced Along-Track Scanning Radiometer (AATSR) and the Sea and Land Surface Temperature
Radiometer (SLSTR) as reference sensors, and the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer
(AVHRR) of the MetOp-A mission to bridge the gap between these references. Observations across a
range of AVHRR zenith angles are matched with dual-view three-channel skin SST retrievals from
the AATSR and SLSTR. These skin SSTs act as the harmonization reference for AVHRR retrievals
by optimal estimation (OE). Parameters for the harmonized AVHRR OE are iteratively determined,
including BT bias corrections and observation error covariance matrices as functions of water-vapor
path. The OE SSTs obtained from AVHRR are shown to be closely consistent with the reference sensor
SSTs. Independent validation against drifting buoy SSTs shows that the AVHRR OE retrieval is stable
across the reference-sensor gap. We discuss that this method is suitable to improve consistency across
the whole constellation of SST sensors. The approach will help stabilize and reduce errors in future
SST CDRs, as well as having application to other domains of remote sensing
Outlier Detection Using Nonconvex Penalized Regression
This paper studies the outlier detection problem from the point of view of
penalized regressions. Our regression model adds one mean shift parameter for
each of the data points. We then apply a regularization favoring a sparse
vector of mean shift parameters. The usual penalty yields a convex
criterion, but we find that it fails to deliver a robust estimator. The
penalty corresponds to soft thresholding. We introduce a thresholding (denoted
by ) based iterative procedure for outlier detection (-IPOD). A
version based on hard thresholding correctly identifies outliers on some hard
test problems. We find that -IPOD is much faster than iteratively
reweighted least squares for large data because each iteration costs at most
(and sometimes much less) avoiding an least squares estimate.
We describe the connection between -IPOD and -estimators. Our
proposed method has one tuning parameter with which to both identify outliers
and estimate regression coefficients. A data-dependent choice can be made based
on BIC. The tuned -IPOD shows outstanding performance in identifying
outliers in various situations in comparison to other existing approaches. This
methodology extends to high-dimensional modeling with , if both the
coefficient vector and the outlier pattern are sparse
Exceptional Sequences on Rational C*-Surfaces
Inspired by Bondal's conjecture, we study the behavior of exceptional
sequences of line bundles on rational C*-surfaces under homogeneous
degenerations. In particular, we provide a sufficient criterion for such a
sequence to remain exceptional under a given degeneration. We apply our results
to show that, for toric surfaces of Picard rank 3 or 4, all full exceptional
sequences of line bundles may be constructed via augmentation. We also discuss
how our techniques may be used to construct noncommutative deformations of

Experimental studies of hypersonic boundary-layer transition and effects of wind tunnel disturbances
Boundary layer transition data on cones and free stream disturbance levels were measured in a hypersonic wind tunnel and Mach 8 variable density hypersonic tunnel. Transition data were obtained by using different conical models and techniques for detecting the location of transition. The disturbance levels were measured by using hot wire anemometry and pressure transducers. The transition Reynolds numbers obtained from the tests correlated well when the fluctuating pressures measured at the surface of conical models were used as a correlating parameter
