    Freshwater Ecosystems: From Models to Applications

    Freshwater ecosystems—lakes and streams—are being endangered by agricultural, urban, and industrial pollution; hydraulic engineering; and overexploitation, which threaten their capacity to provide important services (recreation and supply of food and clean water, among others). Ecological modeling may be employed to estimate impacts and analyze mitigation strategies. Toy models are easy to construct, but applying them to real-world problems is often challenging. Here, we show in two case studies how the connection from model to application can be made. The first study analyzes whether and how the impact of climatic change on a mostly recreational fishery in an Alpine lake can be mitigated, while the second looks at restoring biodiversity after cleaning up pollution in a Korean river system, using aquatic insects, which play an essential functional role in aquatic food-webs and are very sensitive to water quality, as indicators of ecosystem health. These studies highlight the ability of process-based eco-evolutionary models to generate testable hypotheses and contribute solutions to real-world problems

    The Impact of Communication through Community and Public Radio

    This paper intends to go into detail about the differences in communication styles found in public and community radio. Drawing on communication theories and previous empirical research, this paper will not only delve into the differences between the two categories of stations but also into the effect these types of communication styles can have on the listeners and communities targeted by these stations at large. Through a review of multiple forms of literature and academic resources, this paper will examine the roles of community and public radio as outlets for news coverage, promoting civic engagement, and as a platform for discussion about the local area around the station. This paper will additionally go into detail about the challenges these stations face due to advancements in technology, shifting preferences in programming, and a constantly changing media landscape. This paper aims to give a cohesive explanation of the differences in communication and programming in these types of stations, as well as how those styles of communication are forced to change with shifts in societal wants and needs in regard to what radio stations offer

    BLDS Articulated Mounting Feet

    This final report summarizes all of the efforts of the Senior Project aimed at creating Articulating Mounting Feet for the BLDS. The project focuses on improving the design of the mounting feet for the current Boundary Layer Data System at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. Dr. Russ Westphal, the project’s sponsor, wishes that our team focus primarily on a reliable and lightweight mount design for a curved wing, with only transverse curvature. Dr. Westphal is currently researching the boundary layer effects on airplane wings at Cal Poly, and the ability to mount to a multitude of surface contours would increase the range of data he would be able to collect

    Physicians have to get a \u201cspecific\u201d diploma attending a threeyear training course provided by each regional health service in order to practice as General Practitioners in Italy. In the last years, there has been an ongoing debate about the need to evolve the specific regional courses into integrated specialization training courses, organized and managed by universities with the contribution of regional health services. The Italian Junior Doctors Association and the Giotto Movement carried out a national survey with the aim to identify strengths and weaknesses of the specific regional training courses. Three-hundred-two junior General Practitioners in training (61,2% females) answered to a web administered questionnaire. Only about half of the recruited trainees has defined as at least \u201csufficient\u201d the training provided by the regional courses. The survey documented in the Italian General Practitioners trainees the need to satisfy an educational demand in order to implement their primary care and general practice skills. In conclusion, this cross-sectional study provided sufficient evidences supporting the evolution of the regional training courses into general practice and primary care specialization schools

    The demographic and epidemiological transitions resulted in a pressing need to reformulate the health workforce demand and to revise pre-and post-graduate training to prepare the medical profiles to meet the new health needs focused on chronic diseases. The Italian Junior Doctors Association and the Giotto Movement carried out a web survey to identify the motivational aspects and the level of satisfaction of Italian junior doctors regarding knowledge and skills acquired after attending the General Practitioners\u2019 specific training (GP-ST). Three-hundred-forty-seven General Practitioners (GPs), 302 trainees and 45 newly qualified trainees answered a web questionnaire. Significant differences (p-value= 0.018) were documented between the two groups regarding the level of satisfaction on the GP-ST. The analysis by geographic macro-areas of the answers given by the 302 trainees showed a heterogeneous level of overall satisfaction (p-value= 0.005). In conclusion, the evidence provided by this cross-sectional study support the proposal to evolve the GP-ST regional courses into general practice and primary care specialization schools

    Position-agnostic Algebraic Estimation of 6G V2X MIMO Channels via Unsupervised Learning

    MIMO systems in the context of 6G Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) will require an accurate channel knowledge to enable efficient communication. Standard channel estimation techniques, such as Unconstrained Maximum Likelihood (U-ML), are extremely noisy in massive MIMO settings, while structured approaches, e.g., compressed sensing, are sensitive to hardware impairments. We propose a novel multi-vehicular algebraic channel estimation method for 6G V2X based on unsupervised learning which exploits recurrent vehicle passages in typical urban settings. Multiple training sequences from different vehicle passages are clustered via K-medoids algorithm based on their algebraic similarity to retrieve the MIMO channel eigenmodes, which can be used to improve the channel estimates. Numerical results show the presence of an optimal number of clusters and remarkable benefits of the proposed method in terms of Mean Squared Error (MSE) compared to standard U-ML solution (15 dB less)
