Nanocrystalline iron at high pressure
X-ray diffraction measurements were performed on nanocrystalline iron up to 46 GPa. For nanocrystalline epsilon-Fe, analysis of lattice parameter data provides a bulk modulus, K, of 179±8 GPa and a pressure derivative of the bulk modulus, K[prime], of 3.6±0.7, similar to the large-grained control sample. The extrapolated zero-pressure unit cell volume of nanocrystalline epsilon-Fe is 22.9±0.2 Å^3, compared to 22.3±0.2 Å^3 for large-grained epsilon-Fe. No significant grain growth was observed to occur under pressure
Shocks and coffee : lessons from Nicaragua
Using household level panel data from Nicaragua, this paper explores the impact of the recent coffee crisis on rural households engaged in coffee production, and coffee labor work. Taking advantage of the panel structure of the data, a number of findings emerge: a) while overall growth between 1998, and 2001 was widespread in rural Nicaragua, coffee households saw large declines in various socioeconomic outcomes; b) among coffee households, it is small farm households that were affected the most, and not poor labor households as previously expected; c) even though coffee households used various risk management strategies to address the shock, it was pre shock, ex-ante strategies (like income diversification) that were the most effective in allowing coffee households insulate against the shock. By contrast, the coffee households that used ex-post coping instruments, did not manage to mitigate the adverse impact as well, with additional potential long run implications via extensive uses of harmful coping strategies (like increases in child labor); and, d) the coffee shock affected upward mobility, and downward poverty vulnerability of coffee households. Symmetry of re-entrant tetragonal phase in Ba1-xNaxFe2As2: Magnetic versus orbital ordering mechanism
Magneto-structural phase transitions in Ba1-xAxFe2As2 (A = K, Na) materials
are discussed for both magnetically and orbitally driven mechanisms, using a
symmetry analysis formulated within the Landau theory of phase transitions.
Both mechanisms predict identical orthorhombic space-group symmetries for the
nematic and magnetic phases observed over much of the phase diagram, but they
predict different tetragonal space-group symmetries for the newly discovered
re-entrant tetragonal phase in Ba1-xNaxFe2As2 (x ~ 0.24-0.28). In a magnetic
scenario, magnetic order with moments along the c-axis, as found
experimentally, does not allow any type of orbital order, but in an orbital
scenario, we have determined two possible orbital patterns, specified by
P4/mnc1' and I4221' space groups, which do not require atomic displacements
relative to the parent I4/mmm1' symmetry and, in consequence, are
indistinguishable in conventional diffraction experiments. We demonstrate that
the three possible space groups are however, distinct in resonant X-ray Bragg
diffraction patterns created by Templeton & Templeton scattering. This provides
an experimental method of distinguishing between magnetic and orbital models
The Radius of Metric Subregularity
There is a basic paradigm, called here the radius of well-posedness, which
quantifies the "distance" from a given well-posed problem to the set of
ill-posed problems of the same kind. In variational analysis, well-posedness is
often understood as a regularity property, which is usually employed to measure
the effect of perturbations and approximations of a problem on its solutions.
In this paper we focus on evaluating the radius of the property of metric
subregularity which, in contrast to its siblings, metric regularity, strong
regularity and strong subregularity, exhibits a more complicated behavior under
various perturbations. We consider three kinds of perturbations: by Lipschitz
continuous functions, by semismooth functions, and by smooth functions,
obtaining different expressions/bounds for the radius of subregularity, which
involve generalized derivatives of set-valued mappings. We also obtain
different expressions when using either Frobenius or Euclidean norm to measure
the radius. As an application, we evaluate the radius of subregularity of a
general constraint system. Examples illustrate the theoretical findings.Comment: 20 page
Statin therapy in critical illness : an international survey of intensive care physicians' opinions, attitudes and practice
Background
Pleotropic effects of statins on inflammation are hypothesised to attenuate the severity of and possibly prevent the occurrence of the host inflammatory response to pathogen and infection-related acute organ failure. We conducted an international survey of intensive care physicians in Australia, New Zealand (ANZ) and United Kingdom (UK). The aims of the survey were to assess the current prescribing practice patterns, attitudes towards prescribing statin therapy in critically ill patients and opinions on the need for an interventional trial of statin therapy in critically ill patients.
Methods
Survey questions were developed through an iterative process. An expert group reviewed the resulting 26 items for face and content validity and clarity. The questions were further refined following pilot testing by ICU physicians from Australia, Canada and the UK. We used the online Smart SurveyTM software to administer the survey.
Results
Of 239 respondents (62 from ANZ and 177 from UK) 58% worked in teaching hospitals; most (78.2%) practised in ‘closed’ units with a mixed medical and surgical case mix (71.0%). The most frequently prescribed statins were simvastatin (77.6%) in the UK and atorvastatin (66.1%) in ANZ. The main reasons cited to explain the choice of statin were preadmission prescription and pharmacy availability. Most respondents reported never starting statins to prevent (65.3%) or treat (89.1%) organ dysfunction. Only a minority (10%) disagreed with a statement that the risks of major side effects of statins when prescribed in critically ill patients were low. The majority (84.5%) of respondents strongly agreed that a clinical trial of statins for prevention is needed. More than half (56.5%) favoured rates of organ failure as the primary outcome for such a trial, while a minority (40.6%) favoured mortality.
Conclusions
Despite differences in type of statins prescribed, critical care physicians in the UK and ANZ reported similar prescription practices. Respondents from both communities agreed that a trial is needed to test whether statins can prevent the onset of new organ failure in patients with sepsis
About the initial mass function and HeII emission in young starbursts
We demonstrate that it is crucial to account for the evolution of the
starburst population in order to derive reliable numbers of O stars from
integrated spectra for burst ages t > 2 - 3 Myr. In these cases the method of
Vacca & Conti (1992) and Vacca (1994) systematically underestimates the number
of O stars. Therefore the current WR/O number ratios in Wolf-Rayet (WR)
galaxies are overestimated. This questions recent claims about flat IMF slopes
(alpha ~ 1-2) in these objects. If the evolution of the burst is properly
treated we find that the observations are indeed compatible with a Salpeter
IMF, in agreement with earlier studies.
Including recent predictions from non-LTE, line blanketed model atmospheres
which account for stellar winds, we synthesize the nebular and WR HeII 4686
emission in young starbursts. For metallicities 1/5 <= Z/Z_sun <= 1 we predict
a strong nebular HeII emission due to a significant fraction of WC stars in
early WR phases of the burst. For other metallicities broad WR emission will
always dominate the HeII emission. Our predictions of the nebular HeII
intensity agree well with the observations in WR galaxies and an important
fraction of the giant HII regions where nebular HeII is detected. We propose

Bifenthrin Baseline Susceptibility and Evaluation of Simulated Aerial Applications in \u3ci\u3eStriacosta albicosta\u3c/i\u3e (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)
Striacosta albicosta (Smith) is a maize pest that has recently expanded its geographical range into the eastern United States and southeastern Canada. Aerial application of pyrethroids, such as bifenthrin, has been a major practice adopted to manage this pest. Reports of field failure of pyrethroids have increased since 2013. Striacosta albicosta populations were collected in 2016 and 2017 from maize fields in Nebraska, Kansas, and Canada and screened with bifenthrin active ingredient in larval contact dose-response bioassays. Resistance ratios estimated were generally low in 2016 (1.04- to 1.32-fold) with the highest LC50 in North Platte, NE (66.10 ng/cm2) and lowest in Scottsbluff, NE (50.10 ng/cm2). In 2017, O’Neill, NE showed the highest LC50 (100.66 ng/cm2) and Delhi, Canada exhibited the lowest (6.33 ng/cm2), resulting in a resistance ratio variation of 6.02- to 15.90-fold. Implications of bifenthrin resistance levels were further investigated by aerial application simulations. Experiments were conducted with a spray chamber where representative S. albicosta populations were exposed to labeled rates of a commercial bifenthrin formulation. Experiments resulted in 100% mortality for all populations, instars, insecticide rates, and carrier volumes, suggesting that levels of resistance estimated for bifenthrin active ingredient did not seem to impact the efficacy of the correspondent commercial product under controlled conditions. Results obtained from this research indicate that control failures reported in Nebraska could be associated with factors other than insecticide resistance, such as issues with the application technique, environmental conditions during and/or after application, or the insect’s natural behavior. A detector for continuous measurement of ultra-cold atoms in real time
We present the first detector capable of recording high-bandwidth real time
atom number density measurements of a Bose Einstein condensate. Based on a
two-color Mach-Zehnder interferometer, our detector has a response time that is
six orders of magnitude faster than current detectors based on CCD cameras
while still operating at the shot-noise limit. With this minimally destructive
system it may be possible to implement feedback to stabilize a Bose-Einstein
