    Teleological Essentialism: Generalized

    Natural/social kind essentialism is the view that natural kind categories, both living and non-living natural kinds, as well as social kinds (e.g., race, gender), are essentialized. On this view, artifactual kinds are not essentialized. Our viewā€”teleological essentialismā€”is that a broad range of categories are essentialized in terms of teleology, including artifacts. Utilizing the same kinds of experiments typically used to provide evidence of essentialist thinkingā€”involving superficial change (study 1), transformation of insides (study 2) and inferences about offspring (study 3)ā€”we find support for the view that a broad range of categoriesā€”living natural kinds, non-living natural kinds and artifactual kindsā€”are essentialized in terms of teleology. Study 4 tests a unique prediction of teleological essentialism and also provides evidence that people make inferences about purposes which in turn guide categorization judgments

    Spectral Variations in Early-Type Galaxies as a Function of Mass

    We report on the strengths of three spectral indicators - Mg_2, Hbeta, and Hn/Fe - in the integrated light of a sample of 100 field and cluster E/S0 galaxies. The measured indices are sensitive to age and/or and metallicity variations within the galaxy sample. Using linear regression analysis for data with non-uniform errors, we determine the intrinsic scatter present among the spectral indices of our galaxy sample as a function of internal velocity dispersion. Our analysis indicates that there is significantly more intrinsic scatter in the two Balmer line indices than in the Mg_2 index, indicating that the Balmer indices provide more dynamic range in determining the age of a stellar population than does the Mg_2 index. Furthermore, the scatter is much larger for the low velocity dispersion galaxies, indicating that star formation has occurred more recently in the lower mass galaxies.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, 1 table, to appear in the Astrophysical Journal Letter

    Placeholder essentialism is the view that there is a causal essence that holds category members together, though we may not know what the essence is. Sometimes the placeholder can be filled in by scientific essences, such as when we acquire scientific knowledge that the atomic weight of gold is 79. We challenge the view that placeholders are elaborated by scientific essences. On our view, if placeholders are elaborated, they are elaborated Aristotelian essences, a telos. Utilizing the same kinds of experiments used by traditional essentialistsā€”involving superficial change (study 1), transformation of insides (study 2), acquired traits (study 3) and inferences about offspring (study 4)ā€”we find support for the view that essences are elaborated by a telos. And we find evidence (study 5) that teleological essences may generate category judgments

    Depauperate Small Mammal Communities in Managed Pine Plantations in Eastern Virginia

    Loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) plantations of four different ages were examined to identify changes in the small mammal community in relation to changes in the vegetational community. Small mammals were evaluated during five seasons using two methods of trapping. Live traps accounted for 65% of captures and seven of nine species, whereas pitfall traps yielded eight species, of which two were not taken with live traps. For both trap types, catch rates averaged less than two per 100 trap-nights, very low even for pine forests. Both abundance and biomass of small mammals declined with increasing stand age, whereas species diversity increased with increasing stand age. The relative proportions of trophic groups changed after crown closure from mostly granivores and omnivores to mostly insectivores. However, after mechanical thinning of late-age stands, small mammals of forested habitats and of early successional habitats were found together. The numbers of trapped small mammals decreased progressively throughout the study. We speculate that weather events might have contributed to this pattern but the reasons are unknown

    Collective multipole-like signatures of entanglement in symmetric N-qubit systems

    A cogent theory of collective multipole-like quantum correlations in symmetric multiqubit states is presented by employing SO(3) irreducible spherical tensor representation. An arbitrary bipartite division of this system leads to a family of inequalities to detect entanglement involving averages of these tensors expressed in terms of the total system angular momentum operator. Implications of this theory to the quantum nature of multipole-like correlations of all orders in the Dicke states are deduced. A selected set of examples illustrate these collective tests. Such tests detect entanglement in macroscopic atomic ensembles, where individual atoms are not accessible.Comment: REVTEX, 4 pages with 1 figure; To appear in Phys. Rev.

    Government-Industry Cooperative Fisheries Research in the North Pacific under the MSFCMA

    The National Marine Fisheries Serviceā€™s Alaska Fisheries Science Center (AFSC) has a long and successful history of conducting research in cooperation with the fishing industry. Many of the AFSCā€™s annual resource assessment surveys are carried out aboard chartered commercial vessels and the skill and experience of captains and crew are integral to the success of this work. Fishing companies have been contracted to provide vessels and expertise for many different types of research, including testing and evaluation of survey and commercial fishing gear and development of improved methods for estimating commercial catch quantity and composition. AFSC scientists have also participated in a number of industry-initiated research projects including development of selective fishing gears for bycatch reduction and evaluating and improving observer catch composition sampling. In this paper, we describe the legal and regulatory provisions for these types of cooperative work and present examples to illustrate the process and identify the requirements for successful cooperative research
