CSI Las Vegas: Privacy, Policing, and Profiteering in Casino Structured Intelligence
This Article argues that the intricate, vast amounts of consumer information compiled through casino structured intelligence require greater protection and oversight in the contexts of both bankruptcy and law enforcement. Section II examines the various types of casino technology and information gathering that casinos perform. Section III considers the available protections of private information in terms of security breaches, law enforcement sharing, and sales in the context of a bankruptcy. Section IV discusses additional safeguards and ethical concerns that should be considered as casinos continue to increase their data mining efforts. Finally, Section V concludes that, minimally, consumers are entitled to more candid disclosures and a meaningful opportunity to protect their own privacy
The NASA/industry Design Analysis Methods for Vibrations (DAMVIBS) program: Boeing Helicopters airframe finite element modeling
Mathematical models based on the finite element method of structural analysis, as embodied in the NASTRAN computer code, are routinely used by the helicopter industry to calculate airframe static internal loads used for sizing structural members. Historically, less reliance has been placed on the vibration predictions based on these models. Beginning in the early 1980's NASA's Langley Research Center initiated an industry wide program with the objective of engendering the needed trust in vibration predictions using these models and establishing a body of modeling guides which would enable confident future prediction of airframe vibration as part of the regular design process. Emphasis in this paper is placed on the successful modeling of the Army/Boeing CH-47D which showed reasonable correlation with test data. A principal finding indicates that improved dynamic analysis requires greater attention to detail and perhaps a finer mesh, especially the mass distribution, than the usual stress model. Post program modeling efforts show improved correlation placing key modal frequencies in the b/rev range with 4 percent of the test frequencies
AgRISTARS. Supporting research: MARS x-band scatterometer
The design, construction, and data collection procedures of the mobile agricultural radar sensor (MARS) x band scatterometer are described. This system is an inexpensive, highly mobile, truck mounted FM-CW radar operating at a center frequency of 10.2 GHz. The antennas, which allow for VV and VH polarizations, are configured in a side looking mode that allows for drive by data collection. This configuration shortens fieldwork time considerably while increasing statistical confidence in the data. Both internal calibration, via a delay line, and external calibration with a Luneberg lens are used to calibrate the instrument in terms of sigma(o). The radar scattering cross section per unit area, sigma(o), is found using the radar equation

This issue of the Newsletter is essentially a catalog of all antarctic meteorites in the collections of the Johnson Space Center Curation Facility and the Smithsonian except for 288 pebbles now being classed. It includes listings of all previously distributed data sheets plus a number of new ones for 1979. Indexes of samples include meteorite name/number, classification, and weathering category. Separate indexes list type 3 and 4 chondrites, all irons, all achondrites, and all carbonaceous chondrites
Similarity Measure Development for Case-Based Reasoning- A Data-driven Approach
In this paper, we demonstrate a data-driven methodology for modelling the
local similarity measures of various attributes in a dataset. We analyse the
spread in the numerical attributes and estimate their distribution using
polynomial function to showcase an approach for deriving strong initial value
ranges of numerical attributes and use a non-overlapping distribution for
categorical attributes such that the entire similarity range [0,1] is utilized.
We use an open source dataset for demonstrating modelling and development of
the similarity measures and will present a case-based reasoning (CBR) system
that can be used to search for the most relevant similar cases

In addition to this, multipath reflections from the ground, known as hot-clutter or terrain scattered interference will add a non-stationary interference component to the image. The goal of interference suppression for SAR is to successfully suppress these interferences while not significantly effecting the image quality by blurring, reducing the resolution or raising the sidelobe level. The paper provides an analysis of the degradation from hot-clutter, the limited restoration that multichannel imaging and slow-time space time adaptive processing (STAP) can provide and how fast-time STAP can improve the final image quality.L. The Host Galaxies of Narrow-Line Seyfert 1s: Evidence for Bar-Driven Fueling
We present a study of the host-galaxy morphologies of narrow- and broad-line
Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s and BLS1s) based on broad-band optical images from
the Hubble Space Telescope archives. We find that large-scale stellar bars,
starting at ~1 kpc from the nucleus, are much more common in NLS1s than BLS1s.
Furthermore, the fraction of NLS1 spirals that have bars increases with
decreasing full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) of the broad component of H-beta.
These results suggest a link between the large-scale bars, which can support
high fueling rates to the inner kpc, and the high mass-accretion rates

Can a Lamb Reach a Haven Before Being Eaten by Diffusing Lions?
We study the survival of a single diffusing lamb on the positive half line in
the presence of N diffusing lions that all start at the same position L to the
right of the lamb and a haven at x=0. If the lamb reaches this haven before
meeting any lion, the lamb survives. We investigate the survival probability of
the lamb, S_N(x,L), as a function of N and the respective initial positions of
the lamb and the lions, x and L. We determine S_N(x,L) analytically for the
special cases of N=1 and N--->oo. For large but finite N, we determine the
unusual asymptotic form whose leading behavior is S_N(z)\simN^{-z^2}, with
z=x/L. Simulations of the capture process very slowly converge to this
