Diversity Of Short Gamma-Ray Burst Afterglows From Compact Binary Mergers Hosting Pulsars
Short gamma-ray bursts (sGRBs) are widely believed to result from the mergers
of compact binaries. This model predicts an afterglow that bears the
characteristic signatures of a constant, low density medium, including a smooth
prompt-afterglow transition, and a simple temporal evolution. However, these
expectations are in conflict with observations for a non-negligible fraction of
sGRB afterglows. In particular, the onset of the afterglow phase for some of
these events appears to be delayed and, in addition, a few of them exhibit
late- time rapid fading in their lightcurves. We show that these peculiar
observations can be explained independently of ongoing central engine activity
if some sGRB progenitors are compact binaries hosting at least one pulsar. The
Poynting flux emanating from the pulsar companion can excavate a bow-shock
cavity surround- ing the binary. If this cavity is larger than the shock
deceleration length scale in the undisturbed interstellar medium, then the
onset of the afterglow will be delayed. Should the deceleration occur entirely
within the swept-up thin shell, a rapid fade in the lightcurve will ensue. We
identify two types of pulsar that can achieve the conditions necessary for
altering the afterglow: low field, long lived pulsars, and high field pulsars.
We find that a sizable fraction (~20-50%) of low field pulsars are likely to
reside in neutron star binaries based on observations, while their high field
counterparts are not. Hydrodynamical calculations motivated by this model are
shown to be in good agreement with observations of sGRB afterglow lightcurves.Comment: Accepted to ApjL. Direct comparison to observed X-Ray afterglows now

Predicting aboveground forest biomass with topographic variables in human-impacted tropical dry forest landscapes
Topographic variables such as slope and elevation partially explain spatial variations in aboveground biomass (AGB) within landscapes. Human activities that impact vegetation, such as cattle grazing and shifting cultivation, often follow topographic features and also play a key role in determining AGB patterns, although these effects may be moderated by accessibility. In this study, we evaluated the potential to predict AGB in a rural landscape, using a set of topographical variables in combination with indicators of accessibility. We modeled linear and non-linear relationships between AGB, topographic variables within the territorial boundaries of six rural communities, and distance to roads. Linear models showed that elevation, slope, topographic wetness index, and tangential curvature could explain up to 21% of AGB. Non-linear models found threshold values for the relationship between AGB and diffuse insolation, topographic position index at 19 × 19 pixels scale and differentiated between groups of communities, improving AGB predictions to 33%. We also found a continuous and positive effect on AGB with increased distance from roads, but also a piecewise relationship that improves the understanding of intensity of human activities. These findings could enable AGB baselines to be constructed at landscape level using freely available data from topographic maps. Bioagent detection using miniaturized NMR and nanoparticle amplification : final LDRD report.
This LDRD program was directed towards the development of a portable micro-nuclear magnetic resonance ({micro}-NMR) spectrometer for the detection of bioagents via induced amplification of solvent relaxation based on superparamagnetic nanoparticles. The first component of this research was the fabrication and testing of two different micro-coil ({micro}-coil) platforms: namely a planar spiral NMR {micro}-coil and a cylindrical solenoid NMR {micro}-coil. These fabrication techniques are described along with the testing of the NMR performance for the individual coils. The NMR relaxivity for a series of water soluble FeMn oxide nanoparticles was also determined to explore the influence of the nanoparticle size on the observed NMR relaxation properties. In addition, The use of commercially produced superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) for amplification via NMR based relaxation mechanisms was also demonstrated, with the lower detection limit in number of SPIONs per nanoliter (nL) being determined
Meta-analysis of genome-wide association studies of asthma in ethnically diverse North American populations.
Asthma is a common disease with a complex risk architecture including both genetic and environmental factors. We performed a meta-analysis of North American genome-wide association studies of asthma in 5,416 individuals with asthma (cases) including individuals of European American, African American or African Caribbean, and Latino ancestry, with replication in an additional 12,649 individuals from the same ethnic groups. We identified five susceptibility loci. Four were at previously reported loci on 17q21, near IL1RL1, TSLP and IL33, but we report for the first time, to our knowledge, that these loci are associated with asthma risk in three ethnic groups. In addition, we identified a new asthma susceptibility locus at PYHIN1, with the association being specific to individuals of African descent (P = 3.9 × 10(-9)). These results suggest that some asthma susceptibility loci are robust to differences in ancestry when sufficiently large samples sizes are investigated, and that ancestry-specific associations also contribute to the complex genetic architecture of asthma
Asia-Latin America Free Trade Agreements: An Instrument for Inter-Regional Liberalization and Integration?
Trade integration and free trade agreement (FTA)-led cooperation between Asia and Latin America has increased since the early 2000s. Using new criteria, this paper examines whether Asia-Latin America FTAs have facilitated market-led integration by liberalizing trade and behind the border regulatory barriers. Overall Asia-Latin America FTAs provide the foundations for inter-regional integration by liberalizing goods and services trade as well as some regulatory barriers. Future FTAs can support deeper integration by reducing residual regulatory barriers. Other policy priorities include forming a large inter-regional FTA, stimulating business use of FTAs and accelerating structural reforms

Saint or Sinner?: A Reconsideration of the Career of Prince Alexandre de Merode, Chair of the International Olympic Committee’s Medical Commission, 1967-2002
This article explores the role of Prince Alexandre de Merode in heading the IOC’s fight against drugs from the 1960s to 2002. History has not served de Merode very well. He has been presented in simplistic ways that emerge from context rather than evidence – as either a saint or a sinner. IOC-sanctioned accounts cast him in the mould of the saint: a moral and intelligent man who saved sports from doping. In contrast, sports academics have tended to portray him as a sinner: an ineffectual leader who did not develop either the testing systems or the punishments required to prevent doping and who deliberately concealed evidence of high-profile doping cases. This article assesses both representations before presenting information to support a richer and more complicated interpretation
