Study of deposition of YBa2Cu3O7-x on cubic zirconia
Films of YBa2Cu3O7-x were grown on (100) cubic zirconia with 8 percent yttria by laser ablation from sintered targets of YBa2Cu3O7-x. The temperature of the zirconia substrate during growth was varied between 700 and 780 C. The atmosphere during growth was 170 mtorr of O2. The films were subsequently slowly cooled in-situ in 1 atm of O2. The best films were c-axis aligned and had a transition temperature of 87.7 K. The superconducting transition temperature and the X-ray diffraction analysis is reported as a function of the substrate temperature and of the angle between the laser beam and the target's normal
Robust statistics for deterministic and stochastic gravitational waves in non-Gaussian noise I: Frequentist analyses
Gravitational wave detectors will need optimal signal-processing algorithms
to extract weak signals from the detector noise. Most algorithms designed to
date are based on the unrealistic assumption that the detector noise may be
modeled as a stationary Gaussian process. However most experiments exhibit a
non-Gaussian ``tail'' in the probability distribution. This ``excess'' of large
signals can be a troublesome source of false alarms. This article derives an
optimal (in the Neyman-Pearson sense, for weak signals) signal processing
strategy when the detector noise is non-Gaussian and exhibits tail terms. This
strategy is robust, meaning that it is close to optimal for Gaussian noise but
far less sensitive than conventional methods to the excess large events that
form the tail of the distribution. The method is analyzed for two different
signal analysis problems: (i) a known waveform (e.g., a binary inspiral chirp)
and (ii) a stochastic background, which requires a multi-detector signal
processing algorithm. The methods should be easy to implement: they amount to
truncation or clipping of sample values which lie in the outlier part of the

Substituent effects on the nitrogen-15 and carbon-13 shieldings of some N-arylguanidinium chlorides
The 13C and 15N chemical shifts of five N-arylguanidinium chlorides carrying polar substituents, ranging in character from 4-methoxy to 4-nitro groups, have been determined by NMR spectroscopy at the natural-abundance level of 13C and 15N in dimethyl sulfoxide solution. Comparison of the 13C shifts of these salts with those of monosubstituted benzenes shows that the guanidinium group induces an average downfield shift of -5.8 ppm of the resonance of the aryl carbon to which it is attached (C1), an average upfield shift of +4.2 ppm for C2 and C6, and a small upfield shift of +1.9 ppm for C4. The shifts of C3 and C5 are small and erratic relative to the corresponding carbons in monosubstituted benzenes. The 15N resonances of the guanidinium nitrogens are quite sensitive to electric effects resulting from substitution of polar groups at C4. The 15N shift of the ==NAr nitrogen relative to that of the salts suggests that the predominant tautomer for N-arylguanidines is (H2N)2C==NAr. The 15N shifts of the (NH2) 2 nitrogens correlate rather well with σp- parameters, whereas the shifts of the -NHAr nitrogens seem to correlate only with R values derived from the σp- substituent constants
Electric-field Manipulation of the Lande' g Tensor of Holes in In0.5Ga0.5As/GaAs Self-assembled Quantum Dots
The effect of an electric field on spin precession in In0.5Ga0.5As/GaAs
self-assembled quantum dots is calculated using multiband real-space
envelope-function theory. The dependence of the Lande' g tensor on electric
fields should permit high-frequency g tensor modulation resonance, as well as
direct, nonresonant electric-field control of the hole spin. Subharmonic
resonances have also been found in g tensor modulation resonance of the holes,
due to the strong quadratic dependence of components of the hole g tensor on

Transboundary Movement of Atlantic Istiophorid Billfishes Among International and U.S. Domestic Management Areas Inferred from Mark-Recapture Studies
Billfish movements relative to the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas management areas, as well as U.S. domestic data collection areas within the western North Atlantic basin, were investigated with mark-recapture data from 769 blue marlin, Makaira nigricans, 961 white marlin, Tetrapturus albidus, and 1,801 sailfish, Istiophorus platypterus. Linear displacement between release and recapture locations ranged from zero (all species) to 15,744 km (mean 575, median 119, SE 44) for blue marlin, 6,523 km (mean 719, median 216, SE 33) for white marlin, and 3,845 km (mean 294, median 98, SE 13) for
sailfish. In total, 2,824 (80.0%) billfish were recaptured in the same management area of release. Days at liberty ranged from zero (all species) to 4,591 (mean 619, median
409, SE 24) for blue marlin, 5,488 (mean 692, median 448, SE 22) for white marlin, and 6,568 (mean 404, median 320, SE 11) for sailfish. The proportions (per species) of visits were highest in the Caribbean area for blue marlin and white marlin, and the Florida East Coast area for sailfish. Blue marlin and sailfish were nearly identical
when comparing the percent of individuals vs. the number of areas visited. Overall, white marlin visited more areas than either blue marlin or sailfish. Seasonality was
evident for all species, with overall results generally reflecting the efforts of the catch and release recreational fishing sector, particularly in the western North Atlantic. This information may be practical in reducing the uncertainties in billfish stock assessments
and may offer valuable insight into management consideration of time-area closure regulations to reduce bycatch mortality of Atlantic billfishes

Epidemiological studies have found an increased incidence of neurodevelopmental disorders in populations prenatally exposed to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Optical imaging provides a minimally invasive way to determine if perinatal SSRI exposure has long-term effects on cortical function. Herein we probed the functional neuroimaging effects of perinatal SSRI exposure in a fluoxetine (FLX)-exposed mouse model. While resting-state homotopic contralateral functional connectivity was unperturbed, the evoked cortical response to forepaw stimulation was altered in FLX mice. Experimental observation of chimera and cluster states in a minimal globally coupled network
A "chimera state" is a dynamical pattern that occurs in a network of coupled
identical oscillators when the symmetry of the oscillator population is broken
into synchronous and asynchronous parts. We report the experimental observation
of chimera and cluster states in a network of four globally coupled chaotic
opto-electronic oscillators. This is the minimal network that can support
chimera states, and our study provides new insight into the fundamental
mechanisms underlying their formation. We use a unified approach to determine
the stability of all the observed partially synchronous patterns, highlighting
the close relationship between chimera and cluster states as belonging to the
broader phenomenon of partial synchronization. Our approach is general in terms
of network size and connectivity. We also find that chimera states often appear
in regions of multistability between global, cluster, and desynchronized
states
