This is the report of the Dutch part of the international North East Atlantic hydro acoustic survey for blue whiting. The survey is coordinated by ICES and has been executed annually. The purpose of the survey is to estimate the blue whiting stock of the North East Atlantic. The ICES uses this estimation is as a “tuning index” to assess the North East Atlantic blue whiting stock. The applied method was echo integration. By sailing transects over the survey area, the total acoustic cross-section can be calculated by surface area sampled. Weakly bound states of polar molecules in bilayers
We investigate a system of two polarized molecules in a layered trap. The
molecules reside in adjacent layers and interact purely via the dipole-dipole
interaction. We determine the properties of the ground state of the system as a
function of the dipole moment and polarization angle. A bound state is always
present in the system and in the weak binding limit the bound state extends to

Generation of continuous-wave THz radiation by use of quantum interference
We propose a scheme for generation of continuous-wave THz radiation. The
scheme requires a medium where three discrete states in a
configuration can be selected, with the THz-frequency transition between the
two lower metastable states. We consider the propagation of three-frequency
continuous-wave electromagnetic (e.m.) radiation through a medium.
Under resonant excitation, the medium absorption can be strongly reduced due to
quantum interference of transitions, while the nonlinear susceptibility is
enhanced. This leads to very efficient energy transfer between the e.m. waves
providing a possibility for THz generation. We demonstrate that the photon
conversion efficiency is approaching unity in this technique.Comment: 18 pages, 4 figure
Why the Water Bridge does not collapse
In 2007 an interesting phenomenon was discovered: a thread of water, the
so-called water bridge (WB), can hang between two glass beakers filled with
deionized water if voltage is applied to them. We analyze the available
explanations of the WB stability and propose a completely different one: the
force that supports the WB is the surface tension of water and the role of
electric field is not to allow the WB to reduce its surface energy by means of

Calibrating the Cepheid Period-Luminosity relation with the VLTI
The VLTI is the ideal instrument for measuring the distances of nearby
Cepheids with the Baade-Wesselink method, allowing an accurate recalibration of
the Cepheid Period-Luminosity relation. The high accuracy required by such
measurement, however, can only be reached taking into account the effects of
limb darkening, and its dependence on the Cepheid pulsations. We present here
our new method to compute phase- and wavelength-dependent limb darkening

Theoretical Limb Darkening for Classical Cepheids: II. Corrections for the Geometric Baade-Wesselink Method
The geometric Baade-Wesselink method is one of the most promising techniques
for obtaining a better calibration of the Cepheid period-luminosity relation by
means of interferometric measurements of accurate diameters. In this paper we
present new wavelength- and phase-dependent limb darkening corrections based on
our time-dependent hydrodynamic models of the classical Cepheid zeta Gem. We
show that a model simulation of a Cepheid atmosphere, taking into account the
hydrodynamic effects associated with the pulsation, shows strong departures
from the limb darkening otherwise predicted by a static model. For most of its
pulsational cycle the hydrodynamic model predicts a larger limb darkening then
the equivalent static model. The hydrodynamics affects the limb darkening
mainly at UV and optical wavelengths. Most of these effects evolve slowly as
the star pulsates, but there are phases, associated with shocks propagating
into the photosphere, in which significant changes in the limb darkening take
place on time-scales of the order of less than a day. We assess the implication
of our model LD corrections fitting the geometric Baade-Wesselink distance of
zeta Gem for the available near-IR PTI data. We discuss the effects of our
model limb darkening on the best fit result, and analyze the requirements
needed to test the time-dependence of the limb darkening with future

What are the strategies, modalities and aspirations of island-based, stateless nationalist and regionalist parties in the twenty-first century? Political independence is now easier to achieve, even by the smallest of territories; yet, it is not so likely to be pursued with any vigour by the world's various persisting sub-national (and mainly island) jurisdictions. Theirs is a pursuit of different expressions of sub-national autonomy, stopping short of independence.
