Self-esteem and outcome fairness: differential importance of procedural and outcome considerations.
Results of a survey of 222 detainees in Dutch jails and police stations showed that outcome-fairness judgments of individuals with high self-esteem were more strongly related to outcome considerations than to procedural considerations, whereas outcome-fairness judgments of individuals with low self-esteem were more strongly related to procedural considerations than to outcome considerations. It was proposed that these differences were due to the fact that (a) procedures more strongly express a social evaluation than outcomes and (b) individuals with low self-esteem are more concerned with social evaluations than individuals with high self-esteem. The implications of the results for other individual-differences factors and other populations than detainees are discussed
Triggered Star Formation by Massive Stars
We present our diagnosis of the role that massive stars play in the formation
of low- and intermediate-mass stars in OB associations (the Lambda Ori region,
Ori OB1, and Lac OB1 associations). We find that the classical T Tauri stars
and Herbig Ae/Be stars tend to line up between luminous O stars and
bright-rimmed or comet-shaped clouds; the closer to a cloud the progressively
younger they are. Our positional and chronological study lends support to the
validity of the radiation-driven implosion mechanism, where the Lyman continuum
photons from a luminous O star create expanding ionization fronts to evaporate
and compress nearby clouds into bright-rimmed or comet-shaped clouds. Implosive
pressure then causes dense clumps to collapse, prompting the formation of
low-mass stars on the cloud surface (i.e., the bright rim) and
intermediate-mass stars somewhat deeper in the cloud. These stars are a
signpost of current star formation; no young stars are seen leading the
ionization fronts further into the cloud. Young stars in bright-rimmed or
comet-shaped clouds are likely to have been formed by triggering, which would
result in an age spread of several megayears between the member stars or star

A Radial Velocity Survey of the Cygnus OB2 Association
We conducted a radial velocity survey of the Cygnus OB2 Association over a 6
year (1999 - 2005) time interval to search for massive close binaries. During
this time we obtained 1139 spectra on 146 OB stars to measure mean systemic
radial velocities and radial velocity variations. We spectroscopically identify
73 new OB stars for the first time, the majority of which are likely to be
Association members. Spectroscopic evidence is also presented for a B3Iae
classification and temperature class variation (B3 - B8) on the order of 1 year
for Cygnus OB2 No. 12. Calculations of the intial mass function with the
current spectroscopic sample yield Gamma = -2.2 +/- 0.1. Of the 120 stars with
the most reliable data, 36 are probable and 9 are possible single-lined
spectroscopic binaries. We also identify 3 new and 8 candidate double-lined
spectroscopic binaries. These data imply a lower limit on the massive binary
fraction of 30% - 42%. The calculated velocity dispersion for Cygnus OB2 is
2.44 +/- km/s, which is typical of open clusters. No runaway OB stars were

Local Pulsars; A note on the Birth-Velocity Distribution
We explore a simple model for the representation of the observed
distributions of the motions, and the characteristic ages of the local
population of pulsars. The principal difference from earlier models is the
introduction of a unique value, S, for the kick velocity with which pulsars are
born. We consider separately the proper motion components in galactic longitude
and latitude, and find that the distributions of the velocity components
parallel and perpendicular to the galactic plane are represented satisfactorily
by S=200 km/sec, and leave no room for a significant fraction of much higher
velocities. The successful proposition of a unique value for the kick velocity
may provide an interesting tool in attempts to understand the physical process

Binary populations and stellar dynamics in young clusters
We first summarize work that has been done on the effects of binaries on
theoretical population synthesis of stars and stellar phenomena. Next, we
highlight the influence of stellar dynamics in young clusters by discussing a
few candidate UFOs (unconventionally formed objects) like intermediate mass

Interannual and (multi-)decadal variability in the sedimentary BIT index of Lake Challa, East Africa, over the past 2200 years: assessment of the precipitation proxy
The branched vs. isoprenoid tetraether (BIT) index is based on the relative abundance of branched tetraether lipids (brGDGTs) and the isoprenoidal GDGT crenarchaeol. In Lake Challa sediments the BIT index has been applied as a proxy for local monsoon precipitation on the assumption that the primary source of brGDGTs is soil washed in from the lake's catchment. Since then, microbial production within the water column has been identified as the primary source of brGDGTs in Lake Challa sediments, meaning that either an alternative mechanism links BIT index variation with rainfall or that the proxy's application must be reconsidered. We investigated GDGT concentrations and BIT index variation in Lake Challa sediments at a decadal resolution over the past 2200 years, in combination with GDGT time-series data from 45 monthly sediment-trap samples and a chronosequence of profundal surface sediments.Our 2200-year geochemical record reveals high-frequency variability in GDGT concentrations, and therefore in the BIT index, superimposed on distinct lower-frequency fluctuations at multi-decadal to century timescales. These changes in BIT index are correlated with changes in the concentration of crenarchaeol but not with those of the brGDGTs. A clue for understanding the indirect link between rainfall and crenarchaeol concentration (and thus thaumarchaeotal abundance) was provided by the observation that surface sediments collected in January 2010 show a distinct shift in GDGT composition relative to sediments collected in August 2007. This shift is associated with increased bulk flux of settling mineral particles with high Ti?/?Al ratios during March–April 2008, reflecting an event of unusually high detrital input to Lake Challa concurrent with intense precipitation at the onset of the principal rain season that year. Although brGDGT distributions in the settling material are initially unaffected, this soil-erosion event is succeeded by a massive dry-season diatom bloom in July–September 2008 and a concurrent increase in the flux of GDGT-0. Complete absence of crenarchaeol in settling particles during the austral summer following this bloom indicates that no Thaumarchaeota bloom developed at that time. We suggest that increased nutrient availability, derived from the eroded soil washed into the lake, caused the massive bloom of diatoms and that the higher concentrations of ammonium (formed from breakdown of this algal matter) resulted in a replacement of nitrifying Thaumarchaeota, which in typical years prosper during the austral summer, by nitrifying bacteria. The decomposing dead diatoms passing through the suboxic zone of the water column probably also formed a substrate for GDGT-0-producing archaea. Hence, through a cascade of events, intensive rainfall affects thaumarchaeotal abundance, resulting in high BIT index values.Decade-scale BIT index fluctuations in Lake Challa sediments exactly match the timing of three known episodes of prolonged regional drought within the past 250 years. Additionally, the principal trends of inferred rainfall variability over the past two millennia are consistent with the hydroclimatic history of equatorial East Africa, as has been documented from other (but less well dated) regional lake records. We therefore propose that variation in GDGT production originating from the episodic recurrence of strong soil-erosion events, when integrated over (multi-)decadal and longer timescales, generates a stable positive relationship between the sedimentary BIT index and monsoon rainfall at Lake Challa. Application of this paleoprecipitation proxy at other sites requires ascertaining the local processes which affect the productivity of crenarchaeol by Thaumarchaeota and brGDGTs
Discovery of an Unbound Hyper-Velocity Star in the Milky Way Halo
We have discovered a star, SDSS J090745.0+024507, leaving the Galaxy with a
heliocentric radial velocity of +853+-12 km/s, the largest velocity ever
observed in the Milky Way halo. The star is either a hot blue horizontal branch
star or a B9 main sequence star with a heliocentric distance ~55 kpc. Corrected
for the solar reflex motion and to the local standard of rest, the Galactic
rest-frame velocity is +709 km/s.
Because its radial velocity vector points 173.8 deg from the Galactic center,
we suggest that this star is the first example of a hyper-velocity star ejected
from the Galactic center as predicted by Hills and later discussed by Yu &
Tremaine. The star has [Fe/H]~0, consistent with a Galactic center origin, and
a travel time of <80 Myr from the Galactic center, consistent with its stellar
lifetime. If the star is indeed traveling from the Galactic center, it should
have a proper motion of 0.3 mas/yr observable with GAIA. Identifying additional
hyper-velocity stars throughout the halo will constrain the production rate
history of hyper-velocity stars at the Galactic center.Comment: 4 pages, submitted to ApJ Letter
When the Sky Falls NASA's Response to Bright Bolide Events Over Continental USA
Being the only U.S. Government entity charged with monitoring the meteor environment, the Meteoroid Environment Office (MEO) has deployed a network of allsky and wide field meteor cameras, along with the appropriate software tools to quickly analyze data from these systems. However, the coverage of this network is still quite limited, forcing the incorporation of data from other cameras posted to the internet in analyzing many of the fireballs reported by the public and media. Information on these bright events often needs to be reported to NASA Headquarters by noon the following day; thus a procedure has been developed that determines the analysis process for a given fireball event based on the types and amount of data available. The differences between these analysis processes are shown by looking at four meteor events that the MEO responded to, all of which were large enough to produce meteorites
