The conductance of a multi-mode ballistic ring: beyond Landauer and Kubo
The Landauer conductance of a two terminal device equals to the number of
open modes in the weak scattering limit. What is the corresponding result if we
close the system into a ring? Is it still bounded by the number of open modes?
Or is it unbounded as in the semi-classical (Drude) analysis? It turns out that
the calculation of the mesoscopic conductance is similar to solving a
percolation problem. The "percolation" is in energy space rather than in real
space. The non-universal structures and the sparsity of the perturbation matrix

Instability of Quark Matter Core in a Compact Newborn Neutron Star With Moderately Strong Magnetic Field
It is explicitly shown that if phase transition occurs at the core of a
newborn neutron star with moderately strong magnetic field strength, which
populates only the electron's Landau levels, then in the -equilibrium
condition, the quark core is energetically much more unstable than the neutron

Characterization of fragment emission in ^{20}Ne (7 - 10 MeV/nucleon) + ^{12}C reactions
The inclusive energy distributions of the complex fragments (3 Z
7) emitted from the bombardment of ^{12}C by ^{20}Ne beams with incident
energies between 145 and 200 MeV have been measured in the angular range
10 50^{o}. Damped fragment yields in all the cases
have been found to be the characteristic of emission from fully energy
equilibrated composites. The binary fragment yields are compared with the
standard statistical model predictions. Enhanced yields of entrance channel
fragments (5 Z 7) indicate the survival of orbiting-like process
in ^{20}Ne + ^{12}C system at these energies.Comment: 18 pages, 13 figure
Rate of energy absorption by a closed ballistic ring
We make a distinction between the spectroscopic and the mesoscopic
conductance of closed systems. We show that the latter is not simply related to
the Landauer conductance of the corresponding open system. A new ingredient in
the theory is related to the non-universal structure of the perturbation matrix
which is generic for quantum chaotic systems. These structures may created
bottlenecks that suppress the diffusion in energy space, and hence the rate of
energy absorption. The resulting effect is not merely quantitative: For a
ring-dot system we find that a smaller Landauer conductance implies a smaller
spectroscopic conductance, while the mesoscopic conductance increases. Our
considerations open the way towards a realistic theory of dissipation in closed

Energy absorption by "sparse" systems: beyond linear response theory
The analysis of the response to driving in the case of weakly chaotic or
weakly interacting systems should go beyond linear response theory. Due to the
"sparsity" of the perturbation matrix, a resistor network picture of
transitions between energy levels is essential. The Kubo formula is modified,
replacing the "algebraic" average over the squared matrix elements by a
"resistor network" average. Consequently the response becomes semi-linear
rather than linear. Some novel results have been obtained in the context of two
prototype problems: the heating rate of particles in Billiards with vibrating
walls; and the Ohmic Joule conductance of mesoscopic rings driven by
electromotive force. Respectively, the obtained results are contrasted with the

Quantum current magnification in a multi-channel mesoscopic ring
We have studied the current magnification effect in a multi-channel open
mesoscopic ring. We show that the current magnification effect is robust even
in the presence of several propagating modes inspite of mode mixing and
cancellation effects. The magnitude of circulating currents in the
multi-channel regime can be much larger than that in a single channel case.
Impurities can enhance or degrade the current magnification effect depending
sensitively on the system parameters. Circulating currents are mostly
associated with Fano resonances in the total transport current. We further show
that system-lead coupling qualitatively changes the current magnification

Survival of orbiting in Ne (7 - 10 MeV/nucleon) + C reactions
The inclusive energy distributions of fragments with Z 3 emitted from
the bombardment of C by Ne beams with incident energies between
145 and 200 MeV have been measured in the angular range
10 - 50. Damped fragment yields in all cases have been found to
be characteristic of emission from fully energy equilibrated composites; for B,
C fragments, average Q-values, , were independent of the centre of mass
emission angle (), and the angular distributions followed
1/sin like variation, signifying long life times of the
emitting di-nuclear systems. Total yields of these fragments have been found to
be much larger compared to the standard statistical model predictions of the
same. This may be indicative of the survival of orbiting like process in

Minimal SUSY SO(10) model and predictions for neutrino mixings and leptonic CP violation
We discuss a minimal Supersymmetric SO(10) model where B-L symmetry is broken
by a {\bf 126} dimensional Higgs multiplet which also contributes to fermion
masses in conjunction with a {\bf 10} dimensional superfield. This minimal
Higgs choice provides a partial unification of neutrino flavor structure with
that of quarks and has been shown to predict all three neutrino mixing angles
and the solar mass splitting in agreement with observations, provided one uses
the type II seesaw formula for neutrino masses. In this paper we generalize
this analysis to include arbitrary CP phases in couplings and vevs. We find
that (i) the predictions for neutrino mixings are similar with as before and other parameters in a somewhat bigger range and (ii) that
to first order in the quark mixing parameter (the Cabibbo angle), the
leptonic mixing matrix is CP conserving. We also find that in the absence of
any higher dimensional contributions to fermion masses, the CKM phase is
different from that of the standard model implying that there must be new
contributions to quark CP violation from the supersymmetry breaking sector.
Inclusion of higher dimensional terms however allows the standard model CKM
phase to be maintained.Comment: 22 pages, 6 figure
Effect of Progressive Muscle Relaxation in Female Health Care Professionals
Background: Increasing population, fast paced industrialization, increased, competitiveness, unanticipated problems in the work place have increased the stress among the females working in health care in recent times.Aim: The aim of the following study is to detect the stress levels among female health care professionals in the age group of 25-35 years and its impact on health. Subjects and Methods: A prospective cross-sectional pilot project was conducted in a tertiary care hospital in Eastern part of India, after receiving approval from the Institutional Ethics Committee and informed consent form was taken from the subjects. Stress level in the subjects was assessed according to the presumptive life event stress scale. Females withscores above 200 were selected. For these, initial assessment of anthropometric measurement, electrocardiogram and lipid profile analysis, resting pulse rate, blood pressure, physical fitness index (PFI), breath holding time (BHT), isometric hand grip (IHG) test results were evaluatedand recorded. All subjects were given training of progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) for 3 months. After 3 months, the lipid profile and vital parameters, Perceived Stress Scale values were re-evaluated and subjects were asked to repeat the same exercises and data thus recorded were analyzed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 16 (SPSS Inc. Released 2007. SPSS for Windows, Version 16.0. Chicago, SPSS Inc.).Results: Significant decrease in resting heart rate, blood pressure and Perceived Stress Scale levels was seen after PMR training in the subjects. Results of BHT, IHG tests and PFI were significantly increased after PMR training. There was a significant decrease in total cholesterol, triglyceride and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol in subjects after practicing PMR for 3 months. Conclusions: Increasing stress among female health care professionals is a cause for concern and there is a need to adopt early life-style modification by practicing relaxation exercises to ameliorate stress and to improve not only their quality-of-life in general, but patient care in particular.Keywords: Female stress, relaxation techniques, health care professional
